Why, why, WHY do so many people try to pay with a $100 dollar bill for a $6 drink, then get mad when I say no? I had at least over 5 people try to do this today🙃 when I explain that we don’t have enough money in the registers for it, they try to say it’s all they have. When I still stay firm, suddenly, they magically have a credit card.🥴
accountedthrowaway5 68 points 1y ago
yup, and when they ask for a receipt after like they think you were trying to scam them out of their money… like if you had used a card like the rest of us you wouldn’t need to worry about this
rszdemon 60 points 1y ago
Always say you don’t have enough in the till to break 100.

I always tell people I only have 50 dollars left because of how many 20s people pay with. Usually they either find a card or smaller bill MAGICALLY THAT THEY HAD NO IDEA WAS IN THEIR WALLET, or they really are crazy fucking rich and constantly pay with 100s and say to just keep the change, then.

And that’s how I got my store a 94 dollar tip 2 years ago. It was the highlight of my entire time at starbucks.

People are getting cash gifts in large denominations and are trying to break in the easiest and cheapest way possible. This used to happen to our store every December and Chinese New Year.

i guess no one’s heard of an ATM… i don’t expect anything less from our half-brained customer base
rudebii 15 points 1y ago
ATM is one extra trip, can’t be bothered, especially around the holiday, pfft!
[deleted] 7 points 1y ago
WHAT AM I THINKING?? i should of known. not like going to get coffee in a long drive through is already going out of your way or anything!… wait…
dlcksuck 3 points 1y ago
Funny because my Starbucks is directly next to a Bank of America with 24 hour atms and this still happens to us
[deleted] 1 points 1y ago
there’s TWO in the same parking lot as my store, one is right outside our door basically lmao

I tell them it's going to be in mostly 1s if I have the time or else I just say there isn't enough in my till. Even if I have plenty of 5s I will give mostly 1s and count it infront of them and then "accidentally" lose count near the end then repeat it. I have seen a great decrease from doing this.

I hate this 🤦🏻‍♀️ it was even worse when I worked at McDonald’s, would have people pay for a $1 cheeseburger with $100s and $50s.
canidieyet_ 8 points 1y ago
especially right when you get a new drawer, too. shit pissed me off so bad when i worked there.
AndrewtheRey 2 points 1y ago
I worked at McDonald’s about 9 years ago and I remember how we used to run out of $5’s and $1’s because of all the $20’s and we would go down to exact change or card only
Necessary_Low939 10 points 1y ago
They’re usually tourist that want change. Some are fake bills.
The_Septic_Shock 9 points 1y ago
"Would you like the rest on a gift card?"
Beeziboi 9 points 1y ago
i always threaten rolls of quarters
YellowSphinx 8 points 1y ago
I had a lady try that on me once. I told her I didn’t have enough change to break her bill. She just told me to figure it out. I told her she needs to pay with card or go to an atm. she eventually somehow found a $10 that didn’t exist before.
ElectricalScience8 6 points 1y ago
this lady bought an iced coffee , it was $3.99. She handed me a $100 and i told her i wasn’t able to take it. She asked to talk to the shift , only for them to tell her the same thing. and then she insisted we open the safe for her because “I NEED CHANGE😐” like okay???? go to the bank

“You should have a sign up!”

This drives me crazy. One guy even thought we were lying about not keeping 20s in the drawer. They get so pissed off sometimes. Like???? It's a coffee shop your a jerk for trying to pay such a small amount with such a large bill. And they probably wouldn't have left a tip either.
happyzeb 3 points 1y ago
i once had an old guy try to pay for a tall pike with a $100 and when i told him i didn't have the change, he yelled at me saying i was trying to ruin his day or something like that and then tried to throw the hot coffee on me but thank the fucking siren the automatic dt window closed right when he did it and it hit the window and not me. we called the cops on him but idk if anything ever came of it.

I think we are technically not supposed to take anything over a $20, right?
mybadblood -6 points 1y ago
It's because they're poor, and their bank account is probably overdrawn. They are operating in cash and using the bank account as a line of credit. The overdraft fees beat the 20% the title loan places charge.

That is their paycheck money, and they are trying to break it down into easier denominations. If they had direct deposit, most of it would go to their overdraft debt, so they are operating in cash.

The reason why it is higher around this time of year is likely because of the holidays. They overdrafted their accounts buying gifts and are now operating in cash to make sure they can cover the basics.

ETA: I have been poor, so I know how it goes. It's fucked up, but this is how it works. And I hope you understand the implication of why they used their cards, and why it upset them so much to do so.
jelizt 16 points 1y ago
This is completely understandable but if we say we can’t do it then people shouldn’t get mad at us for literally not having enough money in the drawer.
mybadblood 10 points 1y ago
Oh I absolutely agree. But anger usually comes from some other place; I think in this case desperation.
TemperatureHuman7963 4 points 1y ago
That’s interesting, I never knew that. At my store it’s likely not the case though, as I work in the richest neighborhood in the city and in a hospital with doctors and nurses.
mybadblood 2 points 1y ago
Ah yeah, idk some people are just assholes I guess.
It_is_Katy 3 points 1y ago
My family has been there many times as well. No one in their right mind in that situation would choose a $5 coffee and overdrawing their account more over just going to a different store.
