customers who think they know our job better than we do: we’re hiring :) (self.starbucksbaristas)

i had a woman yell at me today because she wanted a panini we were out of. conversation went a little like this:

customer: yeah can i get a tomato mozz panini?

me: i’m so sorry, we sold our last one a few minutes ago. we have all of our other food in stock if you’d like something else?

customer: i don’t believe you. you ALWAYS tell me you’re out. just take a look in the back and i guarantee you’ll find one. they always do.

me:…we set all of our paninis out when we get them but i can go ahead check for any extras in the back. *there weren’t any, like i had told her* unfortunately it looks like we are all out, is there something else we can get for you instead?

customer: well check again. i go through this every time i come here. you guys are always out of tomato mozzarella. this is absolutely ridiculous.

me: the tomato mozz is a very popular item at this location. i apologize for the inconvenience.

*her telling me to look again &getting super snappy while making snide comments when my shift jumps on the headset and tells her we are out & that she helped me look for her precious panini*

she also added 8 warmed things and 2 drinks on at the window and was extremely rude, and kept making me scan an empty sbux card insisting there was money on it. this happens every time she comes through…i’m so tired of it

8 WARMED THINGS AT THE WINDOW??? AND 2 DRINKS?? at that point I would have been like sure, just pull around and we’ll hand it to you inside! one or two items at the window is whatever, but damn

and yes I totally feel you in customers having NO idea how things work. like, does she think you guys enjoy being out of things and then being abused by customers over it? i sure don’t! i wish we were always fully in stock to make the customers as happy as they can be, because then we don’t have to deal with their childish tantrums but it’s not ever that simple!

we also had our “they have no idea” moment today, a lady was yelling at one of the baristas on cafe bar about how she had to wait “30 minutes in line just to order some steamed milk for her kids”. (which, over exaggeration much? i know our cafe line was long but it was probably 15 minutes max from when she entered, got to the cash and ordered, then got to the hand off station to complain). then she proceeded to rant about how if we couldn’t handle the volume of our own store we should have more people scheduled. my SSV then intervened and tried to explain to her nicely that we were in a pandemic and especially with the omicron variant basically throwing our province back into lockdown that we had to schedule a limited amount of people. then she joked “if you want you can come work!” which the lady ended up taking as a joke but I could tell it was meant to be petty lol. it just irked me bc how are you gonna see the long line then complain as if you didn’t just choose to wait in it, knowing we had limited staff and that it would be a long-ish wait when you could have microwaved milk at home or something? then act like it’s OUR fault we’re under staffed?! if we could choose to have more support today then we totally would!

You can’t just endlessly throw more partners on bar to reduce wait times. We don’t have the space and equipment for that. There are just too many customers. That woman could have warmed milk for her children at home

exactly!!! normally we would have had her pull back around or come inside but she was the only car in line so the shift said to leave it 😭

We make customers like her wait outside…in the rain…because we’re petty🤷🏾‍♂️

Some guy came into mine last week asking for butter croissants and apparently he had come 15 times in total asking for a butter croissant and every time we were out? Loo
