"someone i live with has likely been exposed to covid. ive already called out." "ok. youre responsible for finding your coverage." what do i do???? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by leeblissy
I've worked here for like four months already and have only called out once for a genuine emergency. its a genuine emergency again, and I do not feel safe coming in tomorrow (christmas btw, most of my coworkers as far as I can tell celebrate christmas except for one) and my manager, who is GENUINELY the most reasonable and kind managers I've ever had is suddenly acting like covid isnt a big fucking deal and is putting the onus of finding my replacement literally hours away from christmas solely on me.

I'm sorry, that's fucking difficult. all of my coworkers that were willing to work on christmas have already signed up for a christmas shift, INCLUDING myself!! I'm literally on the verge of tears texting as many of my coworkers as I can, and I know this sounds really fucking convenient to get this kinda news right before a holiday that I celebrate but honestly I'm devastated. I was almost looking forward to it cuz it was short hours and extra pay and I really like my coworkers, and I would have been home in time for a Christmas lunch but now idk what to do. everyone who's gotten back to me said they were busy, but like half of my coworkers havent even texted me back and I'm running out of time for this to be a reasonable request of my coworkers.

do y'all know what happens if I can't find a replacement barista?? I kinda don't wanna ask my manager this cuz I'm afraid it'll really look like I was just trying to get out of a Christmas shift with little effort :( I'm NOT going in tomorrow, but if I can't find a replacement do I get punished, even though I contacted my store and my manager immediately to explain what was going on?

EDIT: ugh I feel like I overreacted.... my manager eventually got back to me after I said I couldn't find anyone and said he could cover me. idk, I feel like shit (emotionally) and was panicking or something but I still feel like he was treating me weirdly coldly compared to how he normally treats me which is GENERALLY really well? idk this sucks :/

Nope nope nope. Not your responsibility. Take it to corporate if your manager keeps being a dick about it. You’re completely right with your decision to call out. It’s unfortunate timing but you know what’s also unfortunate? Everybody getting covid.
leeblissy [OP] 20 points 1y ago
EXACTLY MY THOUGHT i honestly feel like kind betrayed because my manager is genuinely so kind usually. like he goes WAY out of his way to make sure we're taken care of normally, so why am I all of a sudden getting such a cold response from him???
sleepygirlofficial 10 points 1y ago
He might be stressed because of the holidays? Personal issues, maybe? Either way, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s not on you to find coverage. It’s unfortunate if he’s going through a tough time but that doesn’t mean it’s okay for him to make YOUR life harder as a result.
mattn1t 5 points 1y ago
He's just a regular person getting stressed about doing more than he already has to. That being said, he's completely wrong and part of being a manager is dealing with that. Try to be understanding where you can but don't let him bully you into coming in
Malevolent_barnacle 4 points 1y ago
I mean, if someone calls out it usually means the SM is coming in to cover, which means he has to give up his Christmas. I get why he might feel upset that this came up the day before. ALSO you are not required to find your own coverage when you are sick. Sucks for him but that's the shitty job that he works.
eyedr0nez 3 points 1y ago
That was HIS decision to become a Manager and make more money. He has more responsibility than you, and therefore it is his job to find coverage. Take care of yourself always please!
BeardiesRule112 25 points 1y ago
Yo fuck these shitty ass managers. Starbucks collects them like fucking STDs.
marilynmansonsbitch 12 points 1y ago
these posts are sooo funny because in your literaly employee handbook it says you ARENT responsible for finding your own coverage, and these managers and shifts want to put it on us like i get your busy with other things but you can also schedule i dunno, a decent amount of people to fall back on when emergencies happen. no its NOT your responsibity and if you can’t find anyone then say “im sorry I asked but i couldn’t find anyone to cover.”
leeblissy [OP] 1 points 1y ago
THAT LAST POINT EXACTLY I've always thought that. like we have a lot of callouts very often that at this point it's just straight up SILLY that they aren't compensating with the schedule at this point. lot of call outs, lot of involuntary covid isolation.

also could you tell me where in the handbook it says I don't have to do that? I'm DEFINITELY keeping that page in mind for next time this happens. my shift leads also didn't know that the starbucks training said there SHOULD be a bottle of lotion readily available to employees to use until I had to beg for one :/

Don't find coverage. You're sick. You don't have to subject your coworkers to an unsafe environment by coming in (it'd also be illegal).
drinkliquidclocks 1 points 1y ago
Illegal? 🤨 What?
Lost_Treat_6296 -1 points 1y ago
Cannot be forced to work in an unsafe work environment.
KenansCloud 2 points 1y ago
Why are they booing you, you’re right.
Lost_Treat_6296 2 points 1y ago
Peeps be crazy. Weird tho cause this sub has a shit ton of stuff about the unionization, you'd think they'd know workplace protections 😩
leeblissy [OP] -1 points 1y ago
I don't know that I'm sick for sure, but I still completely agree. easier said than done though, I would be saying the same thing to someone else but now that I'm in this situation I'm too scared to not go along with it 🥲 I wouldnt have gone in even if I didn't find coverage but idk... the idea of someone accusing me of not trying (which I shouldn't have to anyway) and getting reprimanded for it scares me
HamburgIar_ 10 points 1y ago
You aren't even sick!!! Your roommate hasn't even tested positive!
venturealoha -1 points 1y ago
I’m surprised you don’t have more down votes.
jpnotaru15 9 points 1y ago
This is not a valid reason to call out, assuming you are vaccinated. Unless you test positive OR you experience symptoms.

Quarantine or isolation is not needed from exposure alone for those that are vaccinated, per $1:

> Quarantine if you have been in close contact (within 6 feet of someone for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period) with someone who has COVID-19, unless you have been fully vaccinated. People who are fully vaccinated **do NOT** need to quarantine after contact with someone who had COVID-19 unless they have symptoms. However, fully vaccinated people should get tested 5-7 days after their exposure, even if they don’t have symptoms and wear a mask indoors in public for 14 days following exposure or until their test result is negative.
HamburgIar_ 9 points 1y ago
I mean.... there isn't even a positive test. How is this an emergency?
calimac90 6 points 1y ago
Covid coach questions are helpful with this too. There’s a handful of other variables at play that aren’t stated in the post, but we are not responsible for coverage if WE are sick. Like another said, it is tricky, but not impossible to get figured out safely. This is a stressful time for all of us no matter what role we have within our stores. Glad it got figured out for ya at least!
Paprmoon7 4 points 1y ago
I’m confused. Are you sick? Your roommate was just exposed but not showing symptoms or tested positive??
mrcupcake18 4 points 1y ago
I will NEVER get the whole “your responsible to find coverage” uuuuuh no I’m not! As managers YOU are responsible. I don’t get why we have to be responsible for this. And in this situation it’s even more upsetting because you don’t call out AND you are trying to prevent from people getting sick. Yeah no I hope this doesn’t happen to you again, please report this if he continues to be awful
YoshisShadow 1 points 1y ago
So the policy we agree to by staying employed is that if you need to be off and you know in advance, you need to fond your own coverage. If your sick, you only need to call the store and speak with the playcaller.
persona-2 4 points 1y ago
Your manager is responsible if you are sick. Living with someone who probably was exposed to COVID is so many degrees removed it means nothing. Your calling out because you feel like it, so your manager is correct in this situation.
TYVM143 1 points 1y ago
😅
drinkliquidclocks 4 points 1y ago
At my store they tell us it doesn't matter who in our house has covid as long as we don't have symptoms 💀 are you unvaccinated? You shouldn't have to find coverage but I think any manager would be annoyed that you're calling in because someone who you know knows is sick...
leeblissy [OP] 0 points 1y ago
um thats kind of insane actually, my manager said the point where you'd have to stay home was if you were in contact with someone who tested positive for fifteen minutes 💀 also I kinda of get that, but this isn't just like. a friend if a friend or anything, this is the person who I share a bedroom with, and the person who she spends hours a day working beside.
MacaronJolly 3 points 1y ago
this is a hella tricky situation bc I also have a great manager and they would’ve responded the same way. technically, although you might’ve been exposed, you are not sick and are well enough to at least attempt to find coverage in any normal situation. the tricky part is that it’s Christmas lol. we have a similar situation for our store tomorrow and we had to end up cutting our hours bc we literally only have 4 people able/available to work, including myself. I understand why your manager responded that way, but given that it’s Christmas I feel there should be an attempt at a solution on your manager’s part since it’s going to be basically impossible for you to find someone to come in for you.

I just really hope your manager doesn’t penalize you for not being able to find coverage and steps in to help given the circumstances.

most importantly, I hope you don’t have the vid and are well.
leeblissy [OP] 0 points 1y ago
thank you 🙏 I hope I don't have the vid either 💀 I get what youre saying about the manager thing... still its kind if my opinion that the burden of finding coverage shouldn't fully be on the person calling out Regardless of the circumstances
DaddyGray69 2 points 1y ago
Send him a picture of the call out policy, specifically the part where it says the store manager is responsible. Easy peasy.
wizardsticker 1 points 1y ago
I was in your same spot once upon a time, pre Covid and panicking about coverage but honestly if it comes down to it and no one finds coverage it’s really not so bad. The most that will happen really is a write up and that’s not really a big deal. You can’t get fired for calling in sick one day. My advice is to not take it so seriously next time something like this happens because at the end of the day it’s just coffee and just a job, there is no need drive yourself crazy over stuff like that!
