what do you mean some stores got to close on christmas(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by CorCaroli11
I heard today from a customer that we were the only sbux in town that was open?? And now I see some posts on here about it... so what gives?
I'm not that mad since we made BANK on tips, but there are Starbucks locations literally everywhere(US). We're not a small town either. What determined which stores stayed open? Sales? Cafe and drive thru access? Amount of employees willing to work? A lot of us were scheduled despite not volunteering. Again, the $$$ made up for it and it was a pretty fun shift, but I'm just curious 🤔
aaronbdancer99 points1y ago
It’s usually a volunteer basis on being open today
Lamlot24 points1y ago
My store was the same. I wanted to work it and did well. It was super busy but not over a normal busy day.
eggoverdose14 points1y ago
our DM asks our SM if we’ll be opening for xmas. usually, the SM creates an xmas day sign up sheet for partners who want to work on xmas. if it gets filled enough, we open. else, we close.
JeanLucPicardsAss7 points1y ago
We did not choose lol
paladin-miraak35 points1y ago
Our whole district decided to close today.
EffervescentWalrus25 points1y ago
My store is a kiosk in an office building and we aren’t street level, so we are closed on weekends and major holidays.
MRRutherford10 points1y ago
That sounds pleasant
chellichelli3 points1y ago
It is, but it’s not if you need a minimum number of hours. Stores that are only M-F are difficult to get enough hours at.
EffervescentWalrus1 points1y ago
It really is pleasant. I went from a drive thru to this. I’m really enjoying it. We hardly make any frapps or secret menu drinks. The other commenter is right though, sometimes it can be hard to get the hours you need. I get enough for benefits though, so I’m quite happy.

our manager requests us to stay open through all holidays, every day, 365 days a year (my store). some stores are different and close on certain holidays. depends on ur manager tbh
CorCaroli11 [OP]6 points1y ago
hm he might've, unless he was just pressured to by higher ups 🤷🏻♀️ our store is one of the busiest ones so that would explain why ours stayed open.
Dansterman5414 points1y ago
We were supposed to be open but too many people called out due to sickness I believe
brokenleftjoycon10 points1y ago
It really depends. I work in a mall Starbucks and they’re closed most big holidays because the mall is closed.
roseshrub6 points1y ago
My entire district didn’t get their delivery so majority of us had to shut down as soon as we ran out of milk.
CorCaroli11 [OP]3 points1y ago
damn it seems everyone who was open was having a Day
roseshrub4 points1y ago
Oh yeah, friend. Our store was surprisingly able to make 3 milk runs to keep us running until mid, but I don’t know if they still held on after my shift. Ended up getting a full 8hr thanks to a no-call no-show too. ✨ B a n k ✨
7beforeminutes56 points1y ago
We had one store in our town open but my store and the other store both closed. If we wanted to volunteer at the open store we could tho. I hear tips are amazing on Christmas Day!
CorCaroli11 [OP]2 points1y ago
oh they definitely were, I think we each got about $7 per hour in tips that day!
7beforeminutes52 points1y ago
Dang! Sign me up next year. I don’t care about the Karen’s that’s effectively time and a half right there
CorCaroli11 [OP]2 points1y ago
in addition to the time and a half we already got!! like I said, I was only a little bit bothered because the money made up for the inconvenience and even the Karens.
Necessary_Low9396 points1y ago
If not enough partner stores need to close
Malevolent_barnacle5 points1y ago
The policy is Xmas day is THE ONLY DAY of the year that is 100% volunteer only. If there are not enough volunteers, the store cannot operate and will not open for Xmas day.
So you see why it's in the DM/SM's interest to not disclose this information to you. If this policy is not abided by, please call PCC
CorCaroli11 [OP]1 points1y ago
Hmm it sounds like it definitely wasn't then. We had sign up sheets for each holiday, and were required to pick three. Not enough people volunteered for Christmas day, so several of us were scheduled anyway.
KJ2998SJ5 points1y ago
I don't know what decides it, but at least in my area, there's only one store that stays open on Christmas (usually the same store every year) and it's manned by all the baristas that volunteered.
Phantomfalcon8975 points1y ago
store managers decide. we had a meeting and he literally just asked if anyone wanted to work christmas raise your hand and like two people did. we closed and he sent the other two to a neighboring store.
FancyFroggo5 points1y ago
We got to choose what days we were working for Dec 24-26 and the 31st an the 1st. Only rule was we had to take 3. Not enough people took Christmas to open
CorCaroli11 [OP]1 points1y ago
Yeah we had sign up sheets and were required to pick three. I signed up for Christmas Eve, and new years eve and day. We did have a few people sign up for Christmas day, but not enough apparently so several of us were scheduled anyway
the1noir3 points1y ago
I’ve worked at two Starbuck’s and both locations were closed at Christmas with the option to work at a other location that was open.
twilights_heiress2 points1y ago
we don’t have the customers to do it. there was me and two other shifts willing to work and four baristas but our DM said no
Toomanyboringpeople2 points1y ago
I’ve always been told it’s volunteer only, if there aren’t enough volunteers you just don’t open 🤷🏻♀️
taebunz1 points1y ago
My store was the only one open and I was forced onto the schedule because literally no one wanted to sign up and 90% of the people that worked with me weren't even from my store, nor have they every did a shift at my store. So it was a hot mess, everyone was confused, most of them could barely sequence correctly and I had to work basically every position. And the shifts weren't even my stores shifts either. And to top it off, a lot of the partners don't even work at drive thru stores so they were extra lost...HOT MESS CENTRAL.
Paprmoon71 points1y ago
No idea why we were closed but we were. I know at least 1 store in my city was open and probably the one by the interstate. It was volunteer and you were allowed to ask if the open stores needed more help
Aliciarox111891 points1y ago
My store was the only one open
dthomp08061 points1y ago
It's volunteer only. If no one volunteers, the store doesn't open. If it's corporate. Your sm can't schedule you unless you volunteer.
LZARDKING1 points1y ago
Wait you didn’t volunteer to work? It’s supposed to be volunteer only
CorCaroli11 [OP]1 points1y ago
nope. several of us were scheduled despite not volunteering.
dthomp08061 points1y ago
That sucks. are you a corporate store? If so, your manager lied and went against policy. You did not have to work unless you volunteered. It's not up to the store managers. If no one volunteers, store doesn't open.
bauhaustattoo1 points1y ago
We had one store open in our district and some of the people that volunteered at my store went there, but I think they scheduled all veterans that day because newer partners that volunteered weren’t scheduled.
everything4jimin1 points1y ago
my manager told me that our DM gives all the stores a choice. and my manager wasn’t going to work on Christmas so she put it to the shifts and none of them wanted to work so that’s how they decided to close!
ninamaria171 points1y ago
We were open and only had 4 people the whole day and we are the busiest store in our district our managers basically told us that we weren’t closing on Christmas because we make a lot of money on Christmas
NervosaNervous1 points1y ago
We were open till 9 pm on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day.
Chinaintown1 points1y ago
I work at a hotel and literally 2 weeks before they told my manager he had to open on Christmas! I was so mad for him because what if he made plans? We only opened because the upstairs restaurant didn't wanna open.
Starbucks is the last place that should be opened on Christmas! If you have caffeine addiction just say that but you'd think they just make shit at home but noooo I want the Christmas blonde!!!
WestRate47081 points1y ago
We were closed due to too many partners getting covid.
dayahorne1 points1y ago
Also I guess if you in a licensed starbucks you got to close so...there's that
Swordxxxx1 points1y ago
My store was closed today. Which I mean I’m not mad about because it gave me 3 days off in a row which hasn’t happened in months. Normally don’t even get two days off in a row lolol.
just_pig3on1 points1y ago
Mine decided we wouldn't be open on Christmas day or new years day. Like my SM took them off the sign up sheet for who works holidays n such. So it's up to the store I believe :).
