How do y'all fake it lmao? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Rowmaster-OwO
I gotta ask, cause I am absolutely miserable at work here. Even had a shift lead say to me that,"I don't seem excited to be here" Like bro idk how the fuck some partners can keep that shit up for 8 hours lmao.

I just stop caring about literally anything. I smile and I bounce and I. Do. Not. Think. We have a thirty minute wait time? Cool. Not my problem. Some old man is pissed that we're out if white sugar? Good for him. I still don't care. I'm paid by the hour and we're so understaffed, I'd have to try to get fired. I have fully embraced that.

(note: I handle stress by smiling and turning off my brain, so I am very well-suited to customer service. You might not be, and that's okay. Your shift sounds... Interesting. No one is excited to be at work lol}

This is the way! When I’m nervous/stressed/under pressure I tend to giggle. When people are rude to me I “kill them with kindness”. People with bad attitudes used to get under my skin, but I stopped sinking entirely to their level. I may be a little petty & thank them for their patience when they’ve been badgering me tho.

Idk, make sure your vitamin D levels are okay?

Usually, a few months of me being the crabbiest barista end with a blood test and my doc telling me that I'm seriously deficient in vitamin D and that it's time to go back on the bigass supplements.

And a fellow partner who frequently had what appeared to be bouts of hypoglycemia turned out to also be a vitamin D deficiency.

Basically everyone these days is deficient in vitamin D. Especially during winter. 🤷‍♀️

Honestly I don’t mind if some partners just don’t care and have attitude to customers, it’s only when they have an attitude towards me.

Literally have a shift lead who’s always in a bad mood when she clocks in, like girl quit then. I know we all go through it but do not spread that negative energy to me.
CapableArtist123 2 points 1y ago
Yeah honestly, I’m the partner that gives attitude to customers when they need it and I always defend my partners when customers yell at them too
Lilium816 7 points 1y ago
Been here nearly 6 years.

Yes. I fake it. Customers suck. The level of business sucks. It's a high-stress job for no good reason.

I'm a SSV that only closes. All I care about is giving my fellow partners a good shift and leaving a clean store. Everything else can beat it.

As soon as I finish my degree with ASU I'm outta here.

Well I just make the drinks and they take it. Kill the line. If I’m on register I say what I need to and that’s it.
spacespecterr 2 points 1y ago
literally. i clock in, do my job, and leave. yes shit still bothers me, but like… whatever. i cannot care if i want to have aaaaany peace of mind. ☠️
Necessary_Low939 3 points 1y ago
Yep and so maybe they’ll expect less from baristas
CapableArtist123 6 points 1y ago
Lol honestly, I don’t care anymore. If customers yell at me I say stuff back because I honestly, don’t care.

Get the grumpiness out in the staff area. Laugh at how stupid people are.
serenityforeva3 0 points 1y ago
No literally!!!! Like just try to be happy that you have a job & get through it! Fake it ‘til you make it. We all have to go through this to get to careers that we love. When someone acts all upset it makes it harder for everyone.

Honestly working retail/sales/CS/food you just have to find a line between what can bother you and what can't.

If it's in your control and your okay with it bothering you then do as you please but if it's something out of your control like being short on items and some non regular customers being rude then let it go after a few moments. Have the moment to be annoyed about those things then let it go.

Keeping all of those things on you day after day is draining.

Also it is 100% okay if your not happy go lucky all the time at work or even the whole time. As long as you don't take it out on anyone then your fine.

As for me I just do it to keep everyone in good moods and also I've been in the above mentioned industries for a decade so you find your flow after a while. And don't get me wrong there are days I come into work not quite so happy go lucky but I try to find my line and stand by it.

Just try to treat every new day as a fresh start and if you have a problem with something or someone try to resolve it in that shift if not that moment. Every industry has major issues especially these, find your flow and run with it.

P.S. sorry for the long post created spacing for readability.

Drugs. The end.

literally ignore customers. do what i need to get the line down and relax, get into a groove with it. if im in a position where i need to seem “happy” i just turn my brain off and don’t take anything personally bc i don’t give a shit about the customers.
lilkiosk 3 points 1y ago
Yeah. Basically, you fake it until you make it. I do not care. I am also friends with my coworkers, so when we’re in the thick of it, we have a great time being miserable together. I feel like as long as I have good coworkers, I’ll be alright. But yeah. Customers are trash a lot of the time. I don’t care if George doesn’t have the kind of sweetener he wants available. Like that’s his problem. What’s he gonna do? Like. Sorry. Throw your man tantrum somewhere else. No one cares. It really depends on the management at your store tbh. If your SM and shifts have your back, it’s all good.

Script and nice co workers that wanna bullshit talking around to keep them sane

I like to think of myself as a character in a video game, which makes it kinda fun. I give myself side tasks like refilling oatmeal and grinding preps, and just think of the customers as NPCs. If you ever play sims or papa’s pizzaria type games, i find this to be an effective method.
spacespecterr 2 points 1y ago
this job is so naturally miserable, i also have a hard time understanding how some people are so chipper and upbeat. y’all really have it in you to fake it that often, to that level? i sure as fuck can’t imagine. glad i’m not the only one feeling this way, honestly.

i’m really just pleased to be at a happy medium — the “i don’t give two flying fucks about this place anymore” stage. i don’t smile too much, and i don’t rush to cater to the customer’s every whim when i’m too busy. i don’t have the time or energy to. it makes my life less stressful to just *exist* on the job, at this point.
Ceja-01 1 points 1y ago
Honestly you just have to leave it all at the door. If that doesn’t help I’ve been taking these mood supplements by moon juice and omg they are amazing. I come into work and say hello to everyone. It helps bring the mood up when you are excited to be there
SpaceBrainTheMusical 1 points 1y ago
my shifts are just extended rounds of Barista Simulator 3D. i tend to kind of shut off the part of my brain that anticipates the stakes and just do my job. if no one's actually in danger, we're fine. just take the order and make the drink the best you can and deal with the extra stuff as it comes. having a baseline of detachment makes it so that when I do have those genuine connections with customers and partners, they're that much better.

this is a little miserable to actually spell out, but I really do love my job. it's taken a bit to be able to put on this mindset with my apron; I used to take everything super personally. I'm just there to clock in, do my job, and clock out, and (most of the time) no one's actual life is riding on a cup of coffee.

I always get confused about supervisors who are all that invested. I mean don’t get me wrong it’s exhausting to listen to other partners complain and whine nonstop (a certain type and level of complaining is acceptable but it can also just be so exhausting and extra) but I don’t really care about the job or particularly enjoy it. It’s exhausting. I just want people to do the bare minimum so we can leave.
