Does Starbucks give a lot of hours? Because I'm looking to work at least 20-26 hours a week. I'm given the option of either working at a mall location or a stand alone location, which one would give me more hours?(self.starbucksbaristas)

Hard core depends on the store. Drive through and mall stores generally have more hours than others but in my experience when I was at a drive through I was regularly working 40 and sometimes overtime and even at my new Cafe store I work 38 hours a week
Chijersey [OP]46 points1y ago
My location has a drive through and it's always busy. I'm just a teen trying to save up 4-5k for a car. (My dad is helping me pay)
Sirmarchboy2245 points1y ago
Best bet is talk to your sm about more hours, and have a more open availability. There should be no issue getting 26 hours
socalsailor02719 points1y ago
If you are a minor in most states you can only work 20 hours a week and if hours are being cut yours are almost first to go because the store manager knows you aren’t relying on the money to make ends meet
Chijersey [OP]19 points1y ago
I'm 18 so I shouldn't have an issue with getting hours.
batphomet_19 points1y ago
it’s pretty hard to get good hours at either, but a stand alone is probably your best bet. good luck!!
[deleted]18 points1y ago
Lmfao no
Chijersey [OP]8 points1y ago
how many hours on average?
[deleted]20 points1y ago
Max of about 20 hours. I left for a licensed store so I could at least get full time.
There’s no real way to make a living at Starbucks unless you’re a store manager. Even shifts have a hard time with hours.
HemmyLemming13 points1y ago
It's worth noting that it depends on your district and location, because i did the exact opposite of you: i left my liscensed store because i couldn't get over 20 hours, and now that I'm at my new store I'm getting as many hours as i ask for.
It's not universally true, but I'd say the best call is to play it by ear and see who will give you more hours. Plus, if you're not benefitting from the corporate benefits (the other main reason i switched) then liscensed is probably going to be less stressful.
It all depends on where you are and what they'll offer.
Mo_Maha175514 points1y ago
Yeah sadly at my store I see a partner work once a week unless they are seeking insurance that might help get you to 20because they have to schedule 20 to give maintain insurance.
Chijersey [OP]7 points1y ago
so most people get up to 20 hours a week?
Mo_Maha17553 points1y ago
Some baristas do again it depends on the store and your availability. Cafe locations tend to give less hour but I would just ask the person that interviewed you or is giving you the option to pick and ask “which store is likely to give me more hours or at least 20?”
theirishnarwhal11 points1y ago
Depends on the store
lilkiosk9 points1y ago
I feel like it depends on your SM. I used to work 20-24 hours in a week, which is what I asked for. Then it switch to closer to 30. Now I’m full time.
spensyr7 points1y ago
Depends on the store, at mine it’s pretty normal to get at least 27.5 a week if you have the availability. I’ve been getting scheduled a consistent 32.5-35 hours a week.
omogal1235 points1y ago
How old are you? In my store minors rarely get 20+ hours. And adults gets more than 30! But most of us don’t have time for that bc most of us have second jobs + kids.
Chijersey [OP]5 points1y ago
18 years old, I'm just trying to save up for a car, I currently work at Panera. So I want to work both at the same time.
iqueefkief9 points1y ago
i’d leave panera for starbucks fuck that job
source: worked at panera for 3.5 years, have been at starbucks for 5 years
Chijersey [OP]4 points1y ago
They barely give me hours, they posted two schedules for this last week and this week and I wasn't on the schedule for both weeks. So Idk what to do. I feel like they just want me to quit.
omogal1232 points1y ago
Definitely go with Starbucks!
iqueefkief1 points1y ago
do it! life was so much better after i left
hammerkat6053 points1y ago
I worked at an incredibly busy Starbucks that was short staffed and the manager was super conscious of my schedule.
I wanted 20 hours and I got exactly 20.
Good luck!
theminidong2 points1y ago
i work at a drive through and cafe version and most people get 15-30 hours a week
e_milywll2 points1y ago
Drive throughs will generally be able to give more hours as they are often open longer hours and just a lot busier, I also find the job to be more exciting in a drive through, never too quiet or boring. That being said, I am currently working at a café store and getting very similar hours to what you are looking for, with options to pick up shifts for call-ins or even at nearby stores if they can't find anyone. Look into how busy the stores nearby are and how many current employees work there, that'll give you a sense of how many hours you would be getting.
Chijersey [OP]1 points1y ago
The concept of picking hour shifts at other Starbucks locations is new to me, because from what I know of with other job you really can't do that.
amazong61 points1y ago
Yeah, generally someone will say that there are shifts that need to be covered at other stores and you can take them if you're available. It's pretty convenient if you're trying to work a lot and have a few stores around you
ElectricalScience82 points1y ago
hmmm it honestly depends where you work. at my store minors don’t work that much
dr3mvaalmar2 points1y ago
They used to give me at least 30 hours but they’ll reduce it without any warning. I advice not to be reliant on it. They dropped mine to 20 hours. I asked for more and they basically told me “no.” This is the same for everyone in my store and it’s incredibly frustrating
Edit: my availability is all day except tuesdays and after 6 pm
yyz_barista2 points1y ago
Depends. If you're applying as a full time barista with open availability, I think you could hit at least 20 hours. If you're a part timer with limited availability, getting 20-26 hours might be tough, but it depends on management and your availability.
Chijersey [OP]1 points1y ago
I gave them Mondays- 2pm to 7pm, Fridays- 2pm to 7pm, Sat- 5am to 11am, Sun- 5am to 11am. The manager said that most of the baristas work 5-6 hours a day. I also work at Panera Bread where I work Sat and Sun anywhere from 10am to 5pm. I will have to change my availably at Panera from 12pm to 5pm.
Kivic11 points1y ago
Your availability is what will hold you back from getting the hours you seek.
Chijersey [OP]0 points1y ago
I work at Panera right now they barely give me hours. It's either I work both job or I just do Starbucks. At Starbucks I would probably get about 22 hours with the avavbilty I gave them. They open at 5:30am so maybe I can do 4am to 11am on weekends. than maybe do 11:30 am to 5pm on weekends at Panera. On Monday and Fridays just do 2pm to 7 or 8pm.
aronelo3 points1y ago
The thing is that even if you think a shift would make sense, it likely won’t be what you get due to weird labor restrictions SMs have imposed by DMs. Also, if a store opens at 5:30, openers would get there at 5. Many SMs won’t schedule newer baristas for a shift longer than 5 hours 45 minutes, because if you’re scheduled for 8 hours and call out it’s a bigger gap they have to work around.
Additionally, there’s really no way that you’d be able to get the same set schedule every week, again due to the limitations that SMs have, so even if you were able to get shifts within your availability it would be unlikely that it would be everything that you listed.
yyz_barista8 points1y ago
So you have 22 hours of availability at Starbucks but want 20-26 hours? Good luck with that...
Chijersey [OP]-1 points1y ago
Well with my Panera job it should come up to about 26 hours a week combined.
GuySmileyIncognito6 points1y ago
Depends on their need. You've given a very fixed availability so if those are four shift times a store is desperate to fill, you'll get hours, if not, well you get the point. What times do the stores open and close? Giving availability to close is much more valuable than if you're available until seven, but they close at nine. Also, your hours are going to fluctuate much more at the mall store than the stand alone. The mall is just finishing up it's busiest time of the year by far and about to hit it's slowest time.
Chijersey [OP]0 points1y ago
they open at 5:30 am and close at 10pm, but right now with the holidays the hours are up and down.
cryingoverspiltmiIk1 points1y ago
Yeah you gave them 22 hours of availability a week and are looking for 20 plus hours of work… I think it’s pretty unlikely you’ll be getting the hours you need. Even if you were scheduled for your entire availability, if you were given a lunch break on your longer days you would only have 21 hours of work.
The best way to get more hours, if it ends up being a problem later, would be to find a way to open up your availability some more.
fredforthered1 points1y ago
Looks like you’re working around your school hours.
I worked multiple jobs in school and it can be a bit hectic juggling different locations and company cultures. I left my original job at A&F(loved it, just not worth the commute/mall environment) for SBUX(DT, 5 min drive from home), and just shifted my availability; still got the hours I needed, but I was available open-10a/noon, M-F, and Sun.
If both locations are corporate stores, consider mall traffic in the lot/from the bus stop/ bike racks as well as location within the mall; you might be scheduled for 2pm, but realistically have to be there at 130pm. Malls are also temptation island for your wallet and eating habits. If mall store is licensed, I would recommend you skip unless they can prove in writing they offer comparable benefits and pay to corporate stores; you’re technically not a Starbucks employee in those stores.
Cafe/DT stores tend to be more predictable; which could be a pro or con depending on the time of day or the customer. I don’t know about the difference in tips between them and mall stores, but I know my DT store was a top producer in the district, but I always got better tips picking up shifts at cafe stores; thus may have just been a regional/timing thing because my store was in an area with all new construction and the other stores were a little older.
I hope all this helps. Good luck in your endeavors.
Edit: to break up wall of text.
EliMinivan1 points1y ago
I work at a Safeway booth Starbucks, I get 26-32 hours a week
krty981 points1y ago
You could not pay me enough to ever go back to a licensed store. 100% go to a standalone/corporate store. And ask for the right amount of hours you want
MathSmooth45061 points1y ago
I’ve only ever worked a drive through one and I pull 18-24 hours a week. I was hired part time only.

I think it depends on the store one was willing to give me 20 a week and my current store is giving me 30 but I can work extra if I want and they can call me in if needed etc all I need to do is ask them/my manager basically. I would talk to the managers honestly.
DingleberriesInMyBut1 points1y ago
I worked in a grocery store location and was working 40-50 hours every week, but I know others that were in standalone stores working 20-30. I think it really depends on the store. Talk to your manager about getting more hours and open your availability if you can. I hope it works out for you!

I work 26-34 a week
florencelovelace1 points1y ago
i’ve worked at a mall location before, and would recommend it! our only busy days where the weekends. i left because we were licensed and the owner was running that place to the ground. i also recommend working for corporate locations instead of licensed ones
Toomanyboringpeople1 points1y ago
It really does depend on the store manager, I would ask in interview if you can get what you’re looking for. My old SM never gave anyone enough hours but I’m at the same store and my new SM fights her butt off to get us the hours we ask for 🤷🏻♀️
dcho941 points1y ago
Yeah... ive been working ~40 hours since i started working at starbucks.. at times 35 hours but anything between 32-40 hours is where i usually work but usually 35+ hours
Adventurous_Fuel69871 points1y ago
It depends on how many partners there are and your availability. I work at a location that has 30+ partners with all different schedules
virgofilm1 points1y ago
i was available during opening and closing shifts which is desperately what my store was looking for so they always over scheduled me lol. i asked for 20-25 hours and i’d always get 40
persona-21 points1y ago
With the availability you have listed your going to get like 8. If your store is horribly understaffed and desperate maybe 20 until they get staffed. You can’t assume the manager is going to schedule you exactly what you want to be scheduled. You don’t even know if those are shifts they need or shift lengths they schedule.
kxnkycxrly1 points1y ago
definitely depends on store and availability I had an availability with being able to open every day so I was always scheduled 36+ a week.
Creative_Shopaholic1 points1y ago
When I first started working, I was working 30-35 hours a week. Now, I’m lucky if I get 20. Hours keep getting cut at my store. They’re giving people less hours and hiring more people.
ashleyybabyyxx1 points1y ago
Happy cake day!!
Inferno-ando1 points1y ago
I asked for 30 and I’m getting 50. Really depends on the store.
awkwardleoo1 points1y ago
It really depends on the store and your SM. My store is fairly new and in the beginning I would work around 15-20hrs. Now I work around 30+ hours. It also depends on your availability! My boyfriend and I work at a drive-thru store but since his store has more people, he works either 4 or 6 hours a day (Not really sure how many hours he works in a week since his schedule changes often)
Ohyanoforsure1 points1y ago
Depends on the store but I would say the mall honestly, people always want coffee when they’re shopping ❤️❤️❤️
ashleyybabyyxx1 points1y ago
Happy cake day!!
clumsycalico1 points1y ago
It really really depends. Many people say they have a lot of trouble getting hours, but every store in our district would give any hours to anyone who asks.
e_milywll1 points1y ago

The mall 100%. I work at a Starbucks in the mall and so it’s always busy. During school I work 25 hours and during winter break I even allowed them to put me overtime so I did over 40 hours a week. There is always hours to get at a mall location
BlueWaters991 points1y ago
Also check store closing time. Some Starbucks, especially stand-alone with drive thru-s may be open later
official_koda_1 points1y ago
It seems to depend on the location…I’ve been at the same store for two years with a max hours of 30 hrs and I get on average 25-27 a week. I think most people I work with get however much they want.
elysemosunset1 points1y ago
Starbucks is flexible with hours but you have to work a certain amount of hours to be eligible for benefits.
bitch-baby-20211 points1y ago
I asked for 3 days, 4 max but keep getting 5 days (30+ hrs) so i think it depends on your store
cyan_reynolds1 points1y ago
Definitely go with the standalone, mall locations may not always have the same benefits depending on your location. I personally have had no problem with getting 20-25+ at either of the stores I've worked at, the catch being that your SM will likely force you to have an availability like 35+ hrs/week to get those 20hrs/week.
drinkliquidclocks1 points1y ago
Totally depends on the stores current staff and manager. That's something you ask in an interview, hopefully they'll give you an honest answer
Tiffyost1 points1y ago
You can always pick up hours at other stores.
Chijersey [OP]1 points1y ago
what do you mean? you can do that?
Tiffyost1 points1y ago
I mean you can pick up hours at another Starbucks.
Chijersey [OP]1 points1y ago
how does that work bc I never heard about picking up shifts from different locations
Tiffyost1 points1y ago
I just applied at another SB and told them I need more hours.
Tiffyost1 points1y ago
The manager at the other store talks with your home store manager. You just go in and sign in to the book at another Starbucks.
ghetto-skooter1 points1y ago
i work at a mall and work 35-40, also a shift supervisor where full time is required
