using sick&vacation time before leaving (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by mx1_jawbreaker
hey y'all, what's good. a 287\* here. i've been with the company for two years, and honestly, i'm ready to leave. i've given all of myself to the job. i was the one who came in on days off, never took my sick days, worked all through the pandemic, and stepped up as a shift lead when everybody else quit. i came to starbucks for experience in the industry (and for the health insurance), and i'm leaving as a tired and broken barista.

anyway. moping aside. after two years i have 20hrs of vacation time and 70hrs of sick time. i genuinely don't know how to use these. as much as i'm growing to loathe my store, i don't want to leave them in the weeds. does anybody have advice on how to cash-in on your accumulated time off?

Vaca time is easy. Sick time... is your manager cool? If so, talk to them about getting it out in.

This. You can negotiated with your manager to “schedule” you (additional body) and you’ll call out and claim the sick time. If I remember right, you have to have scheduled shifts to use the sick time.

Nah, don't have to be scheduled. You can use sick time for doctors visits or driving someone to the doctors or some other creative idea. It can be put into the system just like vacation time, just a different code.

This will vary somewhat based on state laws, but the most common answer is that you will get your vacation time paid out on your last paycheck if you don't use it, but you'll forfeit your sick time. Policy says that you can't use your sick time after putting in your two weeks, and that if you call out more than 3 days in a row, you need a doctor's note to come back. So it will be relatively hard to use your sick time without really being sick. If your manager isn't on top of these policies, though, you might slide by.

Your BEN hours are not meaningful in this context. That's just the number of hours you've worked since the last benefits audit, and therefore whether you'll be eligible to maintain benefits after the next audit.

Vacation days are paid out upon leaving, no need to take them.

You cannot use sick days unless you are sick.
