SSVs: why did you become a shift lead? (self.starbucksbaristas)

I’m just curious to hear from some people about why they chose to become a shift lead BESIDES the pay bump….. thanks! And happy holidays everyone!! 💚

Finally getting to tell the irate customer who asks for the manager on duty “I am the manager.”
Getting to treat the amazing regulars amazingly and make their days brighter. Getting to give the horrible customers, who hate Starbucks baristas, Burger King par service so they go somewhere else and stop mistreating the baristas.
Getting to set the floor fairly bc so often shifts will only take positions they want, but as a leader you should be involved in every process and getting down and dirty with the baristas bc you’re not better than anyone.
Making the store more organized, running more efficiently, holding partners accountable to the team, hustling hard while still allowing for individuality and fun.
I wrote a book but those are my reasons!

being able to run the shift and to lead my coworkers. I love feeling like I’m someone they can depend on and talk to. I also love being able to talk to rude customers and take that pressure off of my baristas.

i wanted to be a bigger part of my team and help support them the best i could. so many times i had shift leads who skipped breaks, who berated baristas over the littlest things, and who were basically just on a power trip, and it really creates a toxic environment. i think i really just wanted to be someone my team could depend on, and stand up for them when need be. instead of micromanaging i wanted to uplift my partners and help their days go as smoothly as possible.

I came from an assistant manager position so I didn’t want to go back to being a regular. I have always been the manager I wish I had. Plus I’m 19 and I feel like I relate to so many partners. I love knowing that I am the person they come to. It’s refreshing to know im doing just a little something to make the shifts better.

I was hired as a shift lead because I had management experience and was tired of being the grunt at my then-current job. I wanted the power to make my coworkers' lives better, and I missed being respected by my bosses (who basically saw anyone who \*wasn't\* in management as a whining child). The pay was important, but mostly my ability to have a hand in controlling the vibe and flow of a workplace was the significant factor in going for shift instead of barista.

we work a tough job. I made the decision to promote after a coworker who was very very neglectful of culture promoted- I didn’t want her to bring an imbalance to my team. I just wanted the authority and ability to be able to stand up for my baristas with conviction, and be their line of defense. I often tell mad customers, “ah, so sorry, if you’re gonna yell at someone yell at me!” In a joking tone, but it really softens them up.

'besides the pay bump,' as though any other reasons to do it are not stockholm syndrome. might as well just wear a patty hearst embroidered apron.
