submitted by LovelyLatte
Hi all!💚 My first day at Starbucks is coming up quick, does anyone have any advice for me? It can be anything!

also please don’t say something like “yeah my advice is to QUIT!! lol” not what I’m looking for lmao

EDIT: Thanks to everyone that left advice, you’ve all been very helpful and I’ll be sure to keep it all in mind✨💛

Its going to be alot to take in, and you will probably hit a moment that you get overwhelmed, just remember to breathe and know that those moments happen to all of us, whether new or 20 years in.

ASK QUESTIONS, seriously, it takes maybe a millisecond to answer them, and who knows, you might catch something that other people missed.

Finally, dont be afraid to make mistakes, because every mistake is a new learning opportunity, and you are human afterall (I hope youre human, I cant deal with the robot overlords already).

I asked a shift supervisor to clarify which syrup the passion tea got because I couldn’t remember if it was classic or lcs (I get little to no bar time) and she responded “oh my god, the amount of stupid questions that I have to answer for you”…. Bruh I get no bar time I’m just trying to learn and get better
MathSmooth4506 9 points 1y ago
Wow. That’s not ok. I’m so sorry she treated you like that.
Someone please correct me if I’m wrong. But I believe the teas no longer come sweetened. You have to ask when they order if they want it sweetened and then you just follow the iced drink pump rule 3,4,6.
Diegosnotrod1 4 points 1y ago
Thank you!! (Is alright shes said worse to me before lol, I just kinda ignore her now)
e_milywll 3 points 1y ago
Hmm 🤔 might depend where you live, the recipes can vary regionally, up in Canada where I am we still sweeten the iced teas with liquid cane. That being said, we also have unsweetened matcha that we sweeten with liquid cane as well, which I know is different from in the States.

I always just check and encourage others to check the store resources for recipe cards when uncertain, definitely a helpful resource.

As a shift, I'd rather someone ask me a million questions, then just hand out drinks made wrong.
It's liquid cane, in case they never told you.
Diegosnotrod1 3 points 1y ago
Yeah they never did tell me I had to look it up in the pos, thank you for the help though!
aee78 2 points 1y ago
That's super crappy of them.
All the recipes are also in the ipad under resources if they ever refuse to help you again. My store also keeps the recipe cards under our POS.

That shift manager is not living up to Starbucks standards, definitely shouldn't be hearing that from your coworkers, especially a shift manager.

Unfortunately I've seen this many times where new employees learn bar in training and don't get enough practice for a while after that, making it easy to forget (bar is overwhelming there are so many things to memorize!)

Don't take them seriously, you're doing great, and I hope you start to get more time to practice bar!

(As for memorizing liquid cane vs classic, I just think liquid cane=tea, classic=coffee thats what makes it easy to remember, I definitely got those confused when I started as well)

Man my kiosk i worked at had only classic, no lcs. But the kiosk I trained at had lcs. Didn't know the teas were supposed to have lcs but my kiosk barely did anything right
Diegosnotrod1 2 points 1y ago
Thank you so much! I’ll keep that in mind. As for the supervisor I elect to ignore her and her dirty comments about me, she’s said worse but I don’t pay attention anymore haha

Aw no! That’s such an awful response wtf?? I’m sorry that happened😭

Great advice! Asking questions is sooo important, it’s better to ask and get an answer than to say nothing and be completely lost! (Beep boop! Of course I’m human! lol!)
Organic-Local9279 7 points 1y ago
it’ll be really overwhelming at first but as long as they ease you into everything, you’ll be great! if you mess up or have any accidents, that’s 100% normal so don’t worry about it :) idk if you mean first day training or first day starting so if it’s your first day of training, don’t be afraid to ask questions! same if it’s your actual first day on the floor. good luck and i hope it goes well <3
LovelyLatte [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Thanks for the great advice! I’m hoping it goes well too, just gotta shove my nerves to the side about it haha

welcome fellow green bean! as everyone else unanimously said, *always ask if you have a question,* and dont be afraid to make mistakes

also, dont let stuff that customers say get to you. customers can be mean especially when youre still new, and ESPECIALLY at starbucks.
LovelyLatte [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Thanks! So excited to be a green bean! And I knowww, customers really can be brutal, especially when they want their coffee😭
heytherecomputer 3 points 1y ago
Don’t be afraid to use the “I’m so sorry, I’m new” card. I know someone who still does it after 2 years with the company 😂
LovelyLatte [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I totally would but my biggest fear is I say that and some Karen goes “uM aCtUaLLy, you’re not!”😭

Prepare for your brain to feel like Jello. It’s a lot of information to take in while starting out. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to your trainer, that’s what they are there for. If you get overwhelmed, it’s okay, I think everyone starting at Starbucks gets that feeling at first. But don’t worry, after a few weeks you’ll start to feel more comfortable and confident in your work. Best of luck to you!
LovelyLatte [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Thanks for the luck and advice! I’ll be sure to ask lots of questions, baristas work so hard and I’m so excited to start!
e_milywll 3 points 1y ago
Be patient with yourself. As with any new job, there's a lot to learn, don't put too much pressure on yourself to pick up everything right away. Expect to do some training modules on a computer/iPad, and then working side by side with your trainer.

I'm sure you'll do awesome, wishing a great first shift and training experience!

I actually enjoy working at Starbucks honestly because once you get in a routine it’s just all auto drive lol.

Idk what kind of learner you are but I have to do things to remember them (repetition and all) so I read all the recipe cards and it left my brain immediately. Def ask questions. When you’re first learning bar the best time to practice is at opening because you’re not super busy yet so u can ask questions more.

Also like someone else mentioned don’t worry about your speed people are gonna bitch regardless if their drink took 1 minute or an hour that’s just how it is.

Also I would figure out how to zone out while on bar because that def helps when people are just eyeballing you.
SectionIndividual680 3 points 1y ago
Don’t worry about your speed getting drinks out it will come with time and never be afraid to ask for help!
LovelyLatte [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Thanks! I hope people there will have patience with a newbie barista😭🙏
coharri 2 points 1y ago
Remember at the end of the day you're just making drinks for the general public, don't get stressed out about during the rushes, who gives a shit? Take your time and learn all the drinks, ASK QUESTIONS!! Try and get on POS, it makes learning the drinks way easier. Don't be afraid of CS

This is gonna sound stupid, but use your hat/your visor to your advantage! When I was on bar or food when I first started it was a great way to block out the busy crowd that makes it seem overwhelming. When I couldn’t find my visor I wore a beanie and I hated it! My visor is one of the things that keeps me sane, it blocks of the stress for me
Remember its just coffee, and you’ll grow into the habits. Sequencing may seem hard at first but it gets a lot easier with muscle memory
You may get “baristas arm”, its pain in your right arm since you are overusing it. Stretch it when you get home and you’ll be okay
heytherecomputer 2 points 1y ago
Always ask questions, even if they sound stupid or you’ve asked them 10 times already. It’s better to learn how to do it right the first go around than to find out 3 months in that you’ve been making strawberry fraps without classic the entire time, or been jeopardizing the whipped creams because you didn’t know you were supposed to shake it and let it set (aka me.) Your coworkers may sound annoyed, and some might even actually be annoyed. But any trainer worth their salt will be happy with you asking so many questions and most of your coworkers will understand because they’ve been there. We’ve all been there. I try to joke with the new girl at my store about the things I did wrong to make her feel better about her mistakes, hopefully someone will do that for you, too.

Breathe. It’s a fun job but the first time you have a bad customer, you’ll understand why the baristas on this sub sound like they hate their job. Starbucks customers are something else, and in order to have a good time you need to brush the assholes off. Even if you made their drink wrong, there’s no reason why a customer should berate you. If they’re being a dick, that’s a them-problem, not a you-problem.

Make friends with your coworkers and show a genuine interest in their lives. They are the ones who make the job bearable. In fact, you will never find a Starbucks that is easy or low-stress to work at. But having good coworkers that you consider friends and good enough management will be the things that keep you coming back. If you strike out at this store, wait until the probation period is over and consider transferring.

Cover shifts for people in the beginning and you will never have an issue getting someone to cover for you. People will love you. In fact, not sure if you know this already, but you can cover shifts for people at other Starbucks’ in your district. Ask about the partner shift-coverage group chat and/or page, your district almost certainly has one. (Maybe don’t cover at other stores until you feel passable at the job, but it’s an option if the hours you get at your store aren’t cutting it.)

Don’t be afraid to ask for help and don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself. Most of the people you work with will be people you can lean on because we all understand how hard this job can be. But on that note, if you’re ever being treated unfairly, know your rights and go through the appropriate channels to make sure you have a good place to work in. That applies to every job, but Starbucks has a pretty extensive list of avenues you can take if anything goes wrong. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than a lot of jobs.

Take advantage of your benefits and get going on your 401K and shit. Starbucks has a lot going for it in terms of potential benefits, even if some of them are a bit bare-bones.

You got this. Just breathe and enjoy the good moments. You’ll meet some regulars that you love, you’ll make some good friends, and it really is fun to make a good latte. Best of luck to you. 💚
