For context, this man pulled up less than 30 seconds before we closed. (i.redd.it)

Wasn't going to tip anyway
NervosaNervous [OP] 201 points 1y ago
Oh absolutely not. These kinds of customers never do.
e_milywll 54 points 1y ago
Also in many cases tips are basically couch change, and not in any way seen as a part of our income, not to mention it doesn't go directly into that partners pocket even if they did tip
iqueefkief 92 points 1y ago
they always love to wave it around though

as if we’re going to kiss their asses over the dime they put in the fucking tip jar

It’s true we close at 8:30… idk why u come at 8:29 then are blown away when they tell u they close in 1 minute we want to go home after a long day at work dealing with people like this.. I honestly wouldn’t have even responded I would have simply said we are closed since it’s only a minute away.. the employee should have said that instead tho

I work at a licensed store, and if I have no customers 10 minutes to close, then I’m closed lol. If anyone comes after I just lie and say we had to close early due to understaffing
deeciphered 11 points 1y ago
I worked at a licensed store and once had a guy scream at me for 25 minutes out of my 30 minute close. I'd done my job helping customers up to the close at 8:30 and a guy comes up and get a bag of beans.

Cool I can check that out no problem but he wanted them ground. And my grinder had already been cleaned in my pre-close. I was the only person there for normally the last 5 or so hours of my shift so all the close stuff was on me and we only had 30 minutes after the starbucks closed to finish all the other tasks we couldn't do when we were open so the last of the dishes taking down the bar trash trash run, etc.

Sometimes during the day we'd be so busy that I wouldn't have time to do any prep during the day either so I'd have to wait til after close to make whips Lemonade, and sweetcream for the opener.

So I told him that I was very sorry but we were closed I could check him out for the beans but couldn't grind them due to the grinder being taken down for the night and I told him when we opened the next day.

He proceeded to tell me that he'd run 3 red lights to get there he had been there on time and I had to save him. That he'd spent THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS at target where I worked, that his wife had worked at a Starbucks so he KNEW you weren't allowed to shut ANYTHING down ahead of time so I had to serve him. He told me that I was ruining his kid's Christmas refused to leave as I continued to tell him I was closed. I called over my team lead and he played all buddy buddy with her and was like "I don't know why she's so upset about doing her job"

Like if you were nice about any of this recleaning the grinder isn't the worst thing I could do but after bring shouted at for 25 minutes I'm not about to do anything for you.

That was one of my last straws at that licensed store. I quit about a week or two later and now work at a corporate store.
iqueefkief 29 points 1y ago
when i worked at a drive thru store we’d take our headsets off 2 mins before close bc NO
FancyNeighborhood 196 points 1y ago
Why wouldn’t he ask his kid what he wanted before pulling up to the speaker?
philosopher_cat_lady 146 points 1y ago
Because our time is completely nonvaluable to him
deeciphered 35 points 1y ago
He literally had the entire drive to ask his kid what they wanted threatening the barista with not giving a tip is absolutely not the way to get them to give leeway on the 8:30 time.

If they were super nice to me I might be willing to let it slide since they technically were in line but nah if you're gonna be like that it's 8pm on the dot.
xoMisaa 115 points 1y ago
what the people who get negative votes don’t understand is we have a schedule we follow and having to make something after close messes with it especially when understaffed. also the dad could’ve asked the kid what they wanted BEFORE pulling up to the speaker AND could’ve checked when they closed if it was that late. it’s not about being lazy it’s about having to get shit done on time.
philosopher_cat_lady 51 points 1y ago
One time my shift supervisor told me to put our traffic cones in the drive-thru ten minutes before close because we had a lot of orders we were making and we were behind on closing tasks, understaffed, age old story. I walk back into the store after placing the cones when the headset dings. We're all like, 'What the fuck?' I go, "HOW?!" My SS asks me if I placed the cones in the drive-thru. I say yes. The drive-thru barista tells the customer, "I'm sorry, we're closed!" The customer goes, "You close at 7, thank you very much." We're still stunned that this motherfucker got out of his car to move traffic cones, a goddamn traffic crime. The barista then \*takes his order\*, which pissed me off to no end, especially since she was simply covering for me while I placed the cones. I had to deal with that asshole. Another customer drives up since my cones have been moved. My SS tells this customer we cannot take their order and is audibly distressed. I don't blame them. I put the cones back.
nezaket 48 points 1y ago
> You close at 7, thank you very much

omggggggg my blood is boiling just reading this
Interesting-Wrap9118 9 points 1y ago
Fucking literally man if I’m this upset reading I would have gone in on her at the window
JHOOOOBI 19 points 1y ago
We put a sign in traffic called in a drive-through at one of my old stores before and some bitch popped the curb to go into the drive-through and we had to kick her out. After that we just started parking our cars in the drive-through entrance and exit so they couldn’t get in.
philosopher_cat_lady 5 points 1y ago
That is a brilliant idea. We started putting an a-frame sign, and no customer ever moved that one.
Cafe_Ninja 9 points 1y ago
The other week our a frame was ran over TWICE by customers who "didn't see it". I hope it dealt some damage.
vans_universe 5 points 1y ago
I worked at a drive thru during the lockdown in 2020 and people would literally MOVE THE A FRAME SIGNS. We started putting chairs in the drive thru lame
Interesting-Wrap9118 10 points 1y ago
Wtf oh hell no.. I would have said ACTUALLY we close when the MANAGER says we close not you.. drive forward and caring on with your night good night.. LIKE WHAT THE FUCK…. The Audacity of these humans
xoMisaa 4 points 1y ago
one of my shifts told me a story about a regular who did that in the middle of a snowstorm to check up on them and make sure they were okay… wholesome but like what…. if the cones are out there then that means don’t come through😭 people are whack i swear… at least he went from being a menace to society when i first started to a nice man who actually understands us now over time 😭
Interesting-Wrap9118 7 points 1y ago
Literally… people don’t understand we are timed are days is LITERALLY TIMED and we need to get stuff done quickly we don’t have time for fucking one minutes like… not only are u holding up everyone in Starbucks up but everyone behind you in the line
xoMisaa 4 points 1y ago
informing a customer you close in one minute isn’t snippy either it’s simply just stating information that’s relevant to our job! we’re stressed, understaffed and overworked and if we don’t meet our schedule on time it causes a lot of chaos and rushing just to close everything :/
philosopher_cat_lady -9 points 1y ago

Lol the people that order fraps a minute before closing and they see us cleaning up, sweeping, mopping…
JHOOOOBI 54 points 1y ago
I always tell them sorry my machines are currently being cleaned and aren’t up for drink making. No way am I’m fucking up my close for their ass. They can just be disappointed.
astivana 10 points 1y ago
Someone made me walk back onto our flooded floor to remake their heavily customized frap while we were trying to close because we were flooded!!!
adelaIsInACave 11 points 1y ago
Oh hell nah, they’re bugging 😭 thank god for masks because the faces I make at some of these customers would get me fired
sten45 48 points 1y ago
Ding! It’s 8:30, sorry we are closed.
haydensidun 27 points 1y ago
…then maybe don’t pull up to the drive thru at 8:29
e_milywll 25 points 1y ago
For all the customer knows, the partner they are talking to in the drive through is off at 8:30 and wants to go home (which is the case sometimes). And it's not "just take me as the last order" because what if someone pulls up behind you as you're ordering, then that next customer will also want to "just be the last person", and would be even more upset if denied service knowing the person ahead of them got to order at close. We aren't just whipping up your drink (which late at night isn't usually coffee, more likely a frappe as that may be dessert hour), the order would take time out of the half hour we have to shut everything down and also potentially create more to clean and deal with.

I just don't understand how people can be so entitled, I swear it should be a requirement for everyone to have a job at some point in their life working in customer service, especially fast food. If it seems so easy or you think we are providing poor service, come feel what it's like to do our job and experience customers like you.
kxnkycxrly 18 points 1y ago
have your order ready if you reallllly need Starbucks that bad that late, ESP if you’re getting most likely a caffeinated drink for your kid.
oh and, you can keep your measly 50¢ tip thanks :)
tanlayen 15 points 1y ago
Doubt he would have tipped anyways
philosopher_cat_lady 12 points 1y ago
When people are entitled to bend time
changbinsomnia 10 points 1y ago
whenever we close, thats when we close. like on the dot, no exceptions.. at least at my location. we get that last car their order, shut the window, lock it, lock the lobby (if it isnt already). people don't realize but when theres 3 people closing and one of them is the shift, who has their own stuff to do.. it's technically 2 people closing, one doing the whole stores dishes and another cleaning behind bar and the floors. we want every minute we can get so that we're not there till 11pm at night... & thats without having to do trash runs if theres too much trash. some customers feel entitled but we just say "sorry, unfortunately we closed at ___" and most of the time they drive off 🤷🏻

JHOOOOBI 4 points 1y ago
After that I would have said “K byyyyye!” Took off my headset, locked the window, and turned off the lights to the freakin ordering screen.
Necessary_Low939 3 points 1y ago
I hope you told him sorry sir. It is now 8:31, we are closed. You may not order. Have a nice day.
piIIowtalk 3 points 1y ago
They tried to fix the automated voice at the speaker but it still tells people we are closed like 10 minutes early so we quickly lock everything and hide
swollemolle 2 points 1y ago
What's he gonna tip? $1?
xkcismex 2 points 1y ago
the bitch wasn’t gonna tip to begin with
raycamaro 2 points 1y ago

brattiebun 2 points 1y ago
he’s bitching to bitch and I’m so sick of these kinds of people. They take no responsibility for how they act towards others and blame everything on other people when they’re the incompetent ones. Then to get upset when you show up a minute to close on top of it all? it’s insane.
vanessaleilaa 1 points 1y ago
Parents need to be more responsible for their own damn time and ordering issues and stop blaming us for it. i’m so sick of it
RebekahR84 1 points 1y ago

and then they start expecting that of every other store. you don’t know if they had a lot of closing duties that wasn’t able to get done earlier, were understaffed, had their registers closed or dishes put away. hard rules exist for a reason.

it doesn’t matter how much the store gets in a day, i still get paid the set amount for every hour i work. the customer shouldn’t have shown up less than a minute before close and expected stellar service after asking the baristas to wait EVEN longer to close. the people behind the bar have lives and wanna go home. and at that time they could’ve closed down the bar or dumped the teas and couldn’t make whatever they were gonna order. fuck u and ur shitty attitude

I get paid $16 an hour regardless of if I serve 1 person or I serve 100. I don’t see any % of the profits and so it is against my self interest to work harder than I have to. The owner class wants to hire people to do as much work as possible for the least amount possible (which isn’t flying anymore), and the working class wants the least work for the most amount possible.

dfarner -123 points 1y ago
That is kind of a petty thing to say though. You greeted him, just give him a minute.
MonstrousGiggling 87 points 1y ago
Its really not petty, its simply the truth. He didn't ask his kid what they wanted on their several minute drive over? Or check to see when the store closes? They're a full grown adult and didn't manage to do 2 very basic things and then got upset when politely called out on it.

I doubt they would want someone coming into their workplace a minute before close. They should extend that courtesy to other work places.

Half the people I work with are students and they just want to go home and do their work and sleep. Their time isn't limitless, same with many other workers. Its common decency not to arrive to an eatery a minute before close.
Interesting-Wrap9118 55 points 1y ago
THANK YOUUUUUUUU.. excatly what I’m saying like wtf go home.. talking about give me a minute.. u now decided to ask what they want at this moment what about when u where driving to Starbucks why not then??
dfarner -79 points 1y ago
It is very petty. What is 30 seconds? Y’all project some much negativity no wonder you hate your job.
NervosaNervous [OP] 42 points 1y ago
We had two people on the floor. One person doing both DTO & Bar and one person trying to get caught up with all the closing tasks we were left with since we had been short all day. It wasn’t just 30 seconds it may have taken him to decide what to order. The entire interaction would’ve taken a minimum of three to five minutes depending on how much he ordered and what he ordered. That’s three - five minutes past closing time. We had a mountain of dishes that needed to be done, backups that needed to be made, floors that needed to be swept and mopped, bars that needed to be cleaned and tabbed, tills that needed to be counted, fridges that needed to be cleaned out, trash that needed to be ran…as it was that night we didn’t get out till an hour later than we were originally scheduled.
sheep_heavenly 27 points 1y ago
And three to five minutes for others to line up behind him and get upset when they find out you're actually closed.

Some people have zero perspective.
JHOOOOBI 11 points 1y ago
We don’t hate our job. We hate YOU.
amazing_redhead 23 points 1y ago
Sorry, learn to respect people's time 🤷‍♀️
JHOOOOBI 8 points 1y ago
We are NOT staying late and undoing any kind of closing cleaning and stocking for people who can’t respect the closing time, and the fact that we also have lives outside of work. The world doesn’t revolve around your breed of people. May any drink you get give you Diarrhea on the interstate with no bathroom in sight.
aavery99 2 points 1y ago
Any other time would've been fine, but the dude pulled up 30 seconds before close. At that point, we've already started taking our dishes back, our SSV is doing their closing stuff, and we just want to go home, we have families too. He should've known what he wanted *before* he pulled up. He also should've checked to see when the store closes.
Normal_Human_4567 -64 points 1y ago
Yeah, I gotta agree. I hate when customers do this too but there's no need to be snippy
dfarner -70 points 1y ago
Yeah like I get it it sucks that he came so late but being an ass isn’t helping.
NervosaNervous [OP] 55 points 1y ago
My coworker who informed him of this fact wasn’t being an “ass”. Just informing him of our closing time. Maybe he should have asked his kid what they wanted BEFORE they came less than thirty seconds till we closed. Or maybe they should have come earlier.
