They don’t see baristas as humans. When you’re in uniform, you’re simply part of the background, a thing to abuse and shoulder their inner problems and insecurities onto. A human punching bag with an apron.
Similar to how young students don’t see their teachers as people who have lives outside of grading their papers and having corny jokes. They can’t fathom that. But I don’t blame children because, well, they’re kids and cute and have lots of developing to do.
For the adults? They’re pathetic and sad and aging and so, they project. With this job and *many* shit jobs out there, you can’t take it personally or you’re going to internally combust with rage.

This woman today started yelling at me because someone who was behind her in like got their drink before she did and I gave another person their order after she informed me of this.
The second order was someone who had ordered before her. I told her this. I also told her we have mobile orders and two bars. The first drink she was so mad about was a HCM where the register person prepped everything and I just had to pour the lemonade in, which I did in between finishing the drink ahead of hers. The moment I finished her drink she informed us she wanted a refund so I tossed it and she spent the entire time at the register loudly shit talking me for being lazy and slow.
I was so mad I was shaking lmao. I know how to do my job. Sorry I took a second to finish an already finished much quicker drink. Her drink literally was ready 30 seconds after that one.

Just remember. She drove to your store to get coffee. She was a bitch and then consequently didn't get her coffee.
Someone won in this game, it wasn't her.

Right LOL I literally told my shift “well I’m glad she at least wasted her time as well as mine”

Keep in mind some people will NEVER be satisfied from a service aspect. It has no effect on you whether you roll out the red carpet or just serve them to leave, there is no winning when they've already decided how their experience will pan out. Just try to maintain not losing your shit. Thise kinda people are looking for a reaction, give them nooch!

For sure. I’ve been in the workforce since I was 15 and mostly healthcare. It’s helped me develop the mindset of “people aren’t mad at you, they’re just sick, and you don’t act like yourself when you’re sick”. I even get snappy when sick and I’m usually an overly accommodating person. The level of entitlement or cruelty some people are capable of at this job rivals my patients from other jobs. And those people had the excuse of serious illness. Then again, you never know the kind of day someone is having. So I treat people with respect even if they don’t return it- to a point.

They want something for free that’s why they’re like this.

I was always nice to service workers but Starbucks made me really make a point to be- people are dicks and just aren’t polite. My store was really protective of us and I’ll always appreciate it

This is the reason why I will never go back the worst is when your co worker is acting just as rude. If you have to take out on the poor barista messing up your drink. You need therapy. Take your anger and shit at the manger.
