Bubble tea... at Starbucks?
ImportantWeekend56 points1y ago
Unfortunately the two test drinks have been “In The Dark” a cold brew with a shot and boba, and a chai with boba. I believe you can find them on the regional test menu on the pos now, but I haven’t checked for myself.
miniinovaa18 points1y ago
Ok I know this is gunna be so annoying to make … but chai and boba sounds so good
sir_ramen13 points1y ago
Sow just to be clear, the boba you're talking about are tapioca pearls?
sme11erbee24 points1y ago
i think they’re coffee flavored popping pearls
ImportantWeekend5 points1y ago
I’m guessing yeah. Never been too big on bubble tea, but if you Google “Starbucks boba” there are a lot or articles on it.

Local-Refuse22701 points1y ago
Indeed it is. Someone said in the comment that it is the cold brew with brown sugar and coffee pearls.
TheCatBall1 points1y ago
This is correct, but the phrase “boba tea” cannot be used.

I hope they don’t make this a drink bc a customer orders “shot in the dark” wanting dark roast with a shot. And he’s mean so I don’t wanna explain to him we have a drink called that and he should just say “dark roast with a shot”
lemonuponlemon38 points1y ago
Shot in the dark?? *proceeds to turn off the light and grabs a gun* “I’ll make the moment right, birch”
cyan_reynolds3 points1y ago
Plus it costs $2 more
cihg34 points1y ago
Hiya! I know most comments are “oh no; not a new drink” but it is and we tested it. We’re the Austin Reserve bar and incubation store where we test new drinks, equipment, ideas, etc.
“In The Dark” was one of our testers that sold really well last year. It’a brown sugar syrup, cold brew, coffee poppin’ pearls (which taste amazing), and topped with oat milk.
Edit; and some other cool information: usually these test items take a year or so to develop but the feedback from both our partners (which include stuff like how are we storing them, small wares, ease of access when reaching, how we sequence with them, etc.) and customers was so positive that it was fast tracked for an earlier launch!

tenthwalker1 points1y ago
Also tested at Tryer, our (Tryer baristas) feedback was less positive but glad it went better for y'all in store than it did here
hecaete471 points1y ago
Wait the Austin reserve got this??? When?? I am in Austin and would’ve loved to try this :(

RedKamo21 points1y ago
“Shot in the Dark” it’s probably a dark roast with a shot added?
olivinemultichrome17 points1y ago
People will still call it a black/blue/green/purple/red eye
marklandia9 points1y ago
Red eye = one shot, Black eye = two shots, Black & Blue = three shots
olivinemultichrome7 points1y ago
These are region-specific though, I’ve worked at Starbucks across three states in two different parts of the US and the colors were different in every region, let alone store.
kxnkycxrly0 points1y ago
Red eye = one black eye = two purple eye = three. Never heard of black and blue anywhere I have worked lol.

I thought we were the only ones who got this! You press it and the lights go off, a disco ball comes down from the ceiling, and club music starts playing. Heard they might patch this in the next POS update.

Brie_-6 points1y ago
In the dark is one of the experimental drinks, it'll have little boba bubbles but apparently not everyone likes it
sideonesidetwo6 points1y ago
It’s a drink called Shot in the Dark. Not too sure if it’s actually just drip coffee and a shot, or if it’s some special new drink but
TheOnesLeftBehind14 points1y ago
It’s not. They’re not the same price at all and it doesn’t count any espresso in it
tenthwalker2 points1y ago
It's a test drink currently in a few test markets, it's cold brew, oat milk, and boba-like coffee pearls which are basically just frap roast encapsulated

TheCatBall1 points1y ago
It’s a new drink being tested in a handful of stores. There’s a coffee version (and I think a tea version), they are cold drinks made with tiny pearls of Frappuccino roast that are scooped into the bottom of the cup. I worked a few hours at a test store one day.
Spacebutt691 points1y ago
It's a shot in the dark.
MinuteWolverine10761 points1y ago
We get some customers who ask for a shot in the dark (which is apparently brewed coffee w espresso but as far as I knew that’s called a red eye..) Maybe it’s for a doppio or triple + in the dark? My best guess.
SpookyDaBaby1 points1y ago
A drip coffee with an additional shot.
lunabean1341 points1y ago
It's a night crew thing.
5AV1OR1 points1y ago
You have to turn the lights to the store off when you pull the shot
Far_Unit98831 points1y ago
This is a boba based drink that our Reserve Bar had here in Austin, TX. It was basically just a vanilla sweet cream cold brew with boba. We’re also a testing city for the United States (along with a few others). There was also a sparkling mango(I think) flavored one that had boba in it as well. That one slapped. I miss them. 🥲
Here’s the link if you want to add it to your post.
pitchblackwitch1 points1y ago

My vote is a shot in the dark. Espresso shot + black coffee.
Feel like it goes by red eye on the east coast more often.

It’s a red eye! It’s basically a hot coffee with a shot in it!

I saw this button earlier today. I don’t understand what they’re doing with the POS buttons. The new design is so bad and the names of stuff get cut off on the buttons. If “in the dark” means what I think it does, it’s utterly useless because you still have to specify how many shots go in anyway. I desperately wish to speak to the design and software teams and pick their brains because the shit they do with the POS never makes any sense.
Ker9721 points1y ago
That’s the button that blasts YG in lobby. Originally intended for hyping up the crew at 4 am when there’s no light. I found it super helpful to get rid of the half asleep book readers around closing time.

It’s for a shot in the dark which means a shot of espresso in a cup of coffee. It’s an unnecessary button.

It's a pike with a shot lol
nothing-at-alll0 points1y ago
i think it’s for a shot in the dark? which is pretty much just a shot of espresso in dark roast

punkawkward-2 points1y ago
It’s when you add a shot to a pike place I think????
thelemonjellybean-2 points1y ago
It’s just a button for when someone orders a shot in the dark aka drip coffee with a shot
Individual_Village473 points1y ago
Wouldn’t that be a red eye though?
thelemonjellybean1 points1y ago
Yeah I guess it would be a red eye. The few customers I’ve heard order it have asked for a shot in the dark. I haven’t had anyone order a red eye yet so I didn’t think about that. But also that’s just what comes up on the screen when you press the button so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
insanehufflepuff-1 points1y ago
probably dark roast with a shot — “shot in the dark”
Arevrec-1 points1y ago
A shot
jondgul-10 points1y ago
Same thing as a red eye. 100%
BlackberryOpposite319 points1y ago
It rings up $1 more expensive than a red eye.
TheOnesLeftBehind7 points1y ago
And doesn’t count any espresso so they’re no shots in it
BlackberryOpposite316 points1y ago
Just looked it up and it appears to be for a boba type of cold brew coffee that’s being tested in two stores in California. The drink is cold brew and brown sugar and has coffee balls in it.
