Am I the only one who shows up impossibly early for my shift? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by uselesslesbianism
Writing this in the parking lot, a good 50 minutes before my shift. Does anyone else just love sitting in the parking lot watching the cars in the drive thru?

I love thinking about what everyone’s doing inside, just waiting for my turn to play barista simulator.

Edit: When I see the line wrapped around the building, I have a less enjoyable time waiting for my shift

Hell no. The dread I feel usually has me crawling in a good 3-4 minutes late.
uselesslesbianism [OP] 19 points 1y ago
that’s fair 😂
flamingavocados 97 points 1y ago
I always get to work 15 min early but sometimes it’s 30 min early haha
ItzBoogieMan 18 points 1y ago
20 minutes is the most for me, anymore, I’m using for sleep 😴
Sirmarchboy22 82 points 1y ago
I used to show up at least with 10 minutes so I could get coffee but now qith my shifts moving earlier and earlier into the am I'm showing up 5 mins late cause of massive traffic or fighting my alarm
confusedcoffee11 3 points 1y ago
meeee! it’s bad
beyvader 50 points 1y ago
i would kill to have your optimism bro, i hope you never lose this attitude
uselesslesbianism [OP] 16 points 1y ago
thank you!
4filth 50 points 1y ago
lol absolutely not. that’s unpaid labor as far as i’m concerned!
cyan_reynolds 32 points 1y ago
I used to get there 5-10 mins early but not anymore. Now I get there with -5 mins to spare, sit in my car for a minute, and walk in right when I need to clock in. Get my apron on while I'm on the clock.
codeyumi 23 points 1y ago
I always get to work 30-40 minutes early because I have nothing better to do with my life and like talking to my coworkers haha
alliemoose 7 points 1y ago
We’re like the same person lol
pranasoup 18 points 1y ago
i get to work about 20 minutes early (usually i open) and drink my homemade pour over in the warm silence. sometimes for later AM shifts i’ll sit in my car and enjoy my last few minutes of safe space (i dislike my store and the partners bully me and i still stay late most days so i really don’t care how petty it is lmao) while i watch everyone inside mess around and not set themselves up for success which i love to remind my baristas of when they inevitably blame the closers for xyz. so yes i do this too hahaha
tinseltesseract 17 points 1y ago
I usually open or go in at 5:30-6:30 so there isnt really much for me to see in the parking lot lol. On a good day I wake up around 3:45 and have a decent amount of time to wake up and get ready, but most of the time I wake up at 4:30 like 10 minutes before I have to leave my house. Once I get in the store I’m usually still waking up for about an hour until around when I take my 10, I just go thru all the opening tasks and mark everything off on the csr cards like a zombie lol.
Forever__emo 15 points 1y ago
I’m generally anywhere from 30-60 minutes early. It really depends on how long I have to wait for my buses. If I’m ever less than 20 minutes early I get a text asking if I’m okay because it just isn’t like me.
ThankfulWonderful 11 points 1y ago
I used to be at least 20 minutes early, but now that I’m an SM: if I am 20 minutes early then I spend that checking in on and greeting each of my partners who are on shift or hopping right on the floor because I need to support them.

I remember being an SSV and showing up 45 minutes early, grabbing a drink and smoking a cigarette while scrolling on my phone.

I quit smoking and am now loving being an SM. So, it went in the right direction.

I do miss the less chaotic times pre COVID where I could kick a milkcrate into a corner behind the building and have a few moments of peace before running my shift.
champshere 11 points 1y ago
Yes.
edwardversaii 10 points 1y ago
Exactly this is so weird 😅 but whatever they like I suppose
sci-fi-lullaby 10 points 1y ago
God no, When I could spend 50 mins laying in bed?
Leesbux2001 10 points 1y ago
when i feel like it i will get in like 10 mins early to make my drink and just have a little time to see how the day has been
irlKC 9 points 1y ago
nah. i’m there for what they pay me for, no more, no less.
jewels3100 7 points 1y ago
I used to always get there 20 minutes early to grab a snack and a drink but then my SSVs started making me clock in early and get in the floor so now I go in exactly at my scheduled time
Sassycamo39 2 points 1y ago
It’s ok to tell you SSV no
dr3mvaalmar 5 points 1y ago
I’ve worked with Starbucks for 7 months and do the same thing. I always get there at least 30 minutes early and listen to music while enjoying my coffee. However, I still get treated like shit so I wait until the very moment my shift starts to clock in
omogal123 5 points 1y ago
Omg im like this too!!! But i just hang out my car watching tiktoks and dreadful goingin
RedKamo 4 points 1y ago
I live a one minute drive away from my store, so I’m usually leaving the house at 9:57 for my 10:00 shift.
uselesslesbianism [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I live about 1-2 minutes away from a Starbucks as well but the location that hired me is 22 minutes from me 🙃
cinnalent 4 points 1y ago
my routine was to always give myself 10-15 minutes of decompress time in the parking lot before going inside UwU gives me time to catch up on fics I'm too shy to read in sight of coworkers, lol
sero5074 4 points 1y ago
This is hilarious. We have a joke at our store too that we are sims. Makes the day more fun. We do every 2 hours like “ok this 2 hours I’m playing hot bar” etc it’s so fun
uselesslesbianism [OP] 2 points 1y ago
i love that!!!
ElectricalScience8 4 points 1y ago
yes but it’s because i love siting in my car haha
uselesslesbianism [OP] 2 points 1y ago
me too!!
MoreTiger8502 4 points 1y ago
I used to like to go in an hour early, get some coffee, and sit in the lobby and read my book. It helped me get prepared for what the floor was going to be like when I finally clocked on.
ChaoticDovahkiin 4 points 1y ago
Not me currently sitting in the cafe after showing up 2 hours and 45 minutes early for my shift XD
hollsberry 4 points 1y ago
I do too, but mostly out of fear of getting fired for being late
berry-soda 3 points 1y ago
I used to show up nearly 2 hours before my shift just to sit and enjoy not being at work
drinkliquidclocks 3 points 1y ago
I usually get there 30-45 mins early if I'm not opening. Im at a licensed store with a big cafe so I eat breakfast or lunch before work. It's also inside of a bookstore so I can grab a book to read too.
uselesslesbianism [OP] 3 points 1y ago
i used to work at a BN cafe! but i hated that job and was consistently late 😂
drinkliquidclocks 2 points 1y ago
Yeah I was trying to be vague but it's pretty specific 😏 I've been a lead for 3 years and I honestly love the job I just hate getting paid nothing :(
the1noir 3 points 1y ago
Nah, I sleep in and usually walk in with a minute to clock in and get on the floor.
canidieyet_ 3 points 1y ago
I always come in 15 mins early. It used to give me enough time to grab a drink (and food if I wanted) and get myself ready for my shift. We aren’t allowed to make our own drinks at my store anymore so I show up 10 minutes early instead now lol
Paprmoon7 3 points 1y ago
I’m usually the only person even on time for opening 😑. When I’m not opening I show up 30 mins early
monochromaticcat 3 points 1y ago
I kinda do this? I always show up half an hour early to make sure I have time to get a food and drink markout and mentally prepare myself to clock in. I eat before work since they always give me the lovely 5.5 hour shift during peak to avoid having to give a lunch break :(
uselesslesbianism [OP] 3 points 1y ago
my manager loves hitting me with those 5.75 hour shifts too..
monochromaticcat 2 points 1y ago
5.75 omg that’s even worse I’ve never run into that before… why not just give 6 hours. :(
Brgnbo 3 points 1y ago
It always show up ungodly early and it’s so embarrassing when one of my coworkers catches me just sitting in my car lmao
uselesslesbianism [OP] 3 points 1y ago
gosh me too! even regulars sometimes end up parking next to me and that’s somehow so much worse haha
coldcatsoup 3 points 1y ago
I open every morning. I leave a full hour before we get into the store (long drive) usually wait a few minutes outside. Love getting into the store. Nothing like that first smell of ground beans and Iced Coffee. I love getting the store to “come awake”.
uselesslesbianism [OP] 3 points 1y ago
the handful of opening shifts i worked were always so wonderful. nothing like a starbucks sunrise coming through the windows
ContentAd490 3 points 1y ago
When I was a teenager at Starbucks I’d show up like half an hour early. When I worked there again in my 20s I’d show up 2 minutes before. Haha now at my current job I am always late
lewabwee 3 points 1y ago
I always want to arrive 15 minutes early. I want to sit in my car, listen to music, breath and prepare myself for the onslaught of people’s emotions for like 10 minutes and then go inside and get ready for the following 5. Maybe even clock in a few minutes early to be a responsible and good person so everyone who is leaving can leave at the exact time, even though as a closer I often don’t get that luxury myself.

And the reality is usually I arrive two minutes before I’m supposed to clock in because I don’t want to be there at all.
LycaenopsPictus 3 points 1y ago
I do enjoy showing up about 15, 20 minutes early to get a coffee, ask the morning shift how the shift went/ get a rundown of the morning, and help them catch up/ work through a rush/ exc as needed.

That way, even if there's a delay I'm at least on time.
dallizzlee 2 points 1y ago
Waiting for my turn to play barista simulator lol
lizchesley 2 points 1y ago
i have never seen anything more relatable in my life
Sassycamo39 2 points 1y ago
I get to my shift like 45 mins early so I can order a drink before I start.
homoeroticts 2 points 1y ago
I rideshare to work so I get there early just to ease my anxiety about being late. It’s also nice to take those 25 minutes to pretend I don’t work there and almost enjoy the atmosphere like a regular person.
Gigameki 2 points 1y ago
i come in like 45 minutes early, because the ranked competitive slot of the game i play opens up during that time, so i can get a coffee and try to play a couple rounds 🤣
Natebored1 2 points 1y ago
I sometimes arrive about the same amount of time as you do if not longer just so I can eat the goodies and then take a nap, that way I’ll be refreshed and traumatized enough to jump onboard asap
uselesslesbianism [OP] 1 points 1y ago
oooh napping is a great idea!
LivePurchase7802 2 points 1y ago
i get there about 10-15 minutes early, since the traffic in my area is genuinely so unpredictable. one time i somehow showed up 25 minutes early for no reason. i’ll just sit in my car do a little internal meditation before walking in lmao
lilkiosk 2 points 1y ago
@ me… literally me. But I clock in like 15-30 min early after sitting in my car outside of work for 30+ min.
paethiest 2 points 1y ago
I honestly usually show up a good 10 maybe 15 minutes early and just unwind in my car first
safaerabby 2 points 1y ago
Well I walk to work, and leave my house an hour early. I arrive 30 mins before starting my shift. I take the remaining time to rest a bit🥲
digitalsushi0 2 points 1y ago
I would like to be but I'm an opener and can barely get there on time :/ if I cover a shift im there up to 15 minutes early at best.
bexbux 1 points 1y ago
i always showed up 5 mins before 😂
nixoke 1 points 1y ago
yeah i usually get there 20 minutes early so i can get a drink and something to eat. better than being late ig
official_koda_ 1 points 1y ago
That sounds like anxiety
uselesslesbianism [OP] 1 points 1y ago
tbh you’re not wrong
abigaildumbrique 1 points 1y ago
i usually get there early as well but need to sit in my car to kind of hype myself up and prepare myself
for the monsters that are customers
uselesslesbianism [OP] 2 points 1y ago
that’ll be me today working this 8.5 hour shift 😴
abigaildumbrique 2 points 1y ago
good luck, friend; my thoughts are with you
Arevrec -1 points 1y ago
