tips for night shift/future ssv?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by avacynrising
hi friends!! i'm a 320*, August '21 hire, and I hit my 6 month mark at the end of January. There's an SSV position opening up at that time that my SM is pushing me towards, and I'll be doing the interview as soon as I'm allowed. I've been working opens and early AM for my entire time with the Siren so far, and the SSV position is for the night shift, so my SM is switching my schedule to late afternoons and closing over the next couple of weeks so I can get in the swing of things before (probably? hopefully?) promoting.
Do y'all have any tips for switch to PM from AM shifts, or any tips for new SSVs? Honestly any words of advice would be greatly appreciated, I'm excited but also quite nervous.
Thank you!! 💚

two words: brace yourself. i was actually in the exact same position (worked as AM, moved to nights to promote) and it rocked my shit. I don’t know about your store, but at ones I’ve been at there can be beef between closers and openers and I’ll tell you this, as someone who’s now worked extensively on both: closing. is. harder. and lists, lists, lists, are the key. There is SO much you’ll have to now remember to do, so I highly recommend writing a reusable list (I laminated mine :-)) once you get the swing of things over there. Until then, be sure to listen to the seasoned closers. Your experienced closing baristas will save your ass time and time again.
but I don’t want to scare you haha! If you’re at a lower volume store or on slow days closes can be super chill. Just stay mindful of your tasking. It becomes huge.

Do you have any pics of those lists you’d be willing to share? This is REALLY helpful info regardless.

Work on getting comfortable with not telling, but suggesting people to do task. Delivery is everything.

Good luck! I’m a 320 (late May hire) I hit my 6 month end of November. Interviewed to be a shift at another store and got it mid November. Now I’m waiting to be transferred!!

Listen to your baristas who close on a nightly basis. I promise we aren’t trying to be rude when we are trying to help. We had a shift who came on before I started and she struggled like crazy (she still is but it’s her own fault at this point). We will do everything we can to help you close smoothly but don’t be offended if we suggest you do things differently than you planned to.
