New Oven Concerns (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by CoffeeChesirecat
Has anyone else had dizzy spells, headaches, or vertigo from the new ovens? I'm not doing well being around them and have some concerns. Never had an issue with the old ovens. The cancer warning on the side is worrisome too.
trbpanda 168 points 1y ago
i dont have the new ovens in my store, but i swear there was a post about this on this sub a while ago and op found out that the ovens are either known for or have a warning in the user guide about getting vertigo. there were also many people in the comments saying they got vertigo from the ovens
jazzysoranio 37 points 1y ago
Yeah, I feel like I saw another post just like this one a few weeks ago.
flamingavocados 30 points 1y ago
Yeah I have had bad headaches when on warming but I thought it was because I was dehydrated and never correlated it
ImportantWeekend 9 points 1y ago
Yeahhhh, it ended up not being in the manual at all, but plenty of partners have issues with it. I struggle with vertigo pretty often and oven definitely makes it way worse to the point where I’ve had a pretty bad fall while on it. At this point I almost never get planted on oven, and when I do, its only when I have someone I can swap out with frequently.
FearlessSentence9667 5 points 1y ago
i was just gonna say i saw a post about them a few weeks back
Millerboycls09 162 points 1y ago
There are warnings about being around those ovens for too long because they have so much more microwave energy around them.

They're actually a danger to be planted at for long periods of time. How did that design get approved?
Darcie_Autham 50 points 1y ago
Bc those at corporate are huffing paint lol
Millerboycls09 22 points 1y ago
From the safety and comfort of their own homes
cadmus1890 3 points 1y ago
All ordering on Uber for sure

Cute

Something tells me that the documentation was misinterpreted.
SovietRaptor 1 points 1y ago
It’s hard to prove what caused someone to develop cancer.

New fear: Unlocked
FairProfessional0 92 points 1y ago
I cant stand the new ovens, they’re anxiety-inducing in so many ways. They’re narrower and deeper while also being hotter, so it’s way easier to burn yourself and get more hurt. Their beeps are frequent and sound like a self-destruct countdown, and the amount of heat they exert in your face is so overwhelming. Bring back the old ovens 😭
BeardiesRule112 41 points 1y ago
They sound like a patient flat lining, I can’t stand it.
CoffeeChesirecat [OP] 21 points 1y ago
Yes! I made a joke that it sounded like my partner on warming was performing surgery.
sag606 10 points 1y ago
ive barely worked here for three months and i already have a permanent burn on my right middle finger from the oven
rainbowstoner27 4 points 1y ago
I literally have a burn on my right middle finger from a few nights ago, 21 minutes into my shift
uwumoment 3 points 1y ago
i had a bacon gouda burn a few months into me working there and i still have the scar
0x52and1x52 1 points 1y ago
me with my big scar from the old grilled cheese
xoMisaa 2 points 1y ago
been here 7 months and just wanna say i also have a permanent burn on my LEFT middle finger from warming 🥲👍🏻
rainbowstoner27 3 points 1y ago
They sound like the computer from Lost.
passivelyabbi 81 points 1y ago
My store has been trying to switch who is on oven nearly every hour, because all of us have had headaches. I swear it is what gave me vertigo… 🤷‍♀️
CoffeeChesirecat [OP] 26 points 1y ago
I also got vertigo today. I used to have issues with it years ago, but I got that all under control. Three of us had headaches today.
CardiographicDuck 6 points 1y ago
I wonder if that’s why I’ve been having more frequent headaches..
passivelyabbi 2 points 1y ago
I wouldn’t doubt it, might be worth bringing up to others at your store…
MrDragon7656 55 points 1y ago
.. they are microwaves, they produce radiation, someone get a god damn giga Meter and watch to see if it's leaking cos THAT SOUNDS LIKE IT.

If the old turbos didn't shut for w/e reason we are not to use them until they are repaired, I once had a store which had this happen and I kid you not the repair guy RIPPED me and even had to do a health check on everyone that touched it, was a crazy day.

Someone needs to raise that concern all the way even outside if need be this could cause serious health concerns I stg the amount of posts about these new ovens is a joke
Allopathological 22 points 1y ago
Microwaves don’t produce ionizing radiation so a Geiger counter would not read anything next to them.

The biggest danger from a “leaking” microwave oven is burns and tissue damage. They don’t cause cancer like ionizing radiation does.

It’s more likely fumes from things that are burning (due to the higher oven temp) is what is causing the symptoms. Not the oven itself.
CoffeeChesirecat [OP] 9 points 1y ago
So how safe are these fumes and thr consumption of foods being cooked inside of them?
Allopathological 8 points 1y ago
Probably no more dangerous than food cooked on a BBQ grill, but standing next to one all day will still cause you to get headaches.
ElijahLordoftheWoods 2 points 1y ago
Same concept as radiologists having to stand away from the X-ray machine but patients are ok because they aren’t exposed nearly as frequently
lily-amber 30 points 1y ago
I’ve been getting terrible nausea at work, I went to the doctor twice. Haven’t been at work due to self isolation from a possible exposure, and I haven’t been nauseas since. medicine or no ovens?

MathSmooth4506 20 points 1y ago
Huh. I’ve never worked on anything other than the ovens we have but every time I’m on them I go home with a headache. I just assumed it’s because it’s really hot.
starrrrrfruittttt 16 points 1y ago
Omg some manager told my manager about the ovens and we all decided no lmao
SakasuCircus 15 points 1y ago
Most ovens have teflon coating inside them and is one of the reasons you can't use a self cleaning feature on ovens if you have pet birds.

It's probably because of something along those lines
CoffeeChesirecat [OP] 7 points 1y ago
It did smell strongly of chemicals come to think of it. My head is still pounding 12 hours later.

The new ovens also suck. They don’t make the food crispy (makes them soggy actually)
lewabwee 13 points 1y ago
Are these the “new” ovens or are there new new ovens? The ones I’ve had I’ve had for a while. I haven’t had issues with them but this is concerning.
CoffeeChesirecat [OP] 7 points 1y ago
They're new and different from the turbo ones if that's what you mean.
nikkicarter1111 3 points 1y ago
The new ones are the touchscreen ones that are smaller
bossler13 10 points 1y ago
WTF is everyone talking about with these new ovens? I am on ovens the most at my store but none of us have had any of these issues i've seen partners talking about.
Sea-Nectarine-1522 2 points 1y ago
Ok I’m genuinely trying to understand too 🥺 cause everyone at my store stays on ovens for awhile and none of us have had any issues
CoffeeChesirecat [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I'm also trying to understand. I know it sounds crazy, and I want to be wrong.
overturned23 9 points 1y ago
Are you talking about the electronic ovens with the touch screen or is there even newer ovens? if so we haven’t gotten them yet
Kryrieonn 9 points 1y ago
The ovens with the touch screen, they're small and black :o
CoffeeChesirecat [OP] 4 points 1y ago
Yes, the touch screen.
overturned23 3 points 1y ago
You just got those?? We’ve had those for months! Are you licensed?
CoffeeChesirecat [OP] 5 points 1y ago
No, corporate but in the middle of nowhere and tend to be the end of the line for everything.
mommymary 2 points 1y ago
I’m at a corporate store and we don’t have them, no sign of any new ones coming either 😬
overturned23 1 points 1y ago
We got the new ones early because our store was performing good: The old ones are so loud and annoying.
Several-Government82 6 points 1y ago
Omg…I did a shift at a store that has the new ovens and got so dizzy I could barely get myself home I was so concerned and had no idea what caused them…but I was right next to the ovens the whole night. Has there been a recall? Wtf
JCaligirl420 3 points 1y ago
Is this what it is!!!! When I’m on warming now I get vertigo and feel so nauseous all the time now!
Due_Ad_6793 2 points 1y ago
This might be one of those things where only certain people are affected, like the high pitch white noise that alot of adults can't here but almost all kids can.

Possibly having to do with neuro-divergence or something?
CoffeeChesirecat [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Definitely plausible. I have a lot of "quirks", but my coworker was also complaining of a headache.
It also happened to me again today while I was on warming.
xoMisaa 2 points 1y ago
we had a weird smell coming from ours literally the second day we had them 🥴
iqueefkief 2 points 1y ago
oh fuck i hope this shit gets stopped before it spreads to every store
Roolita 2 points 1y ago
Super happy my store doesn’t have these yet because I have a fainting disorder and I really don’t wannna KO in front of my coworkers

Disastrous-Cat7222 1 points 1y ago
So was there ever a health issue with the old ovens? Cuz if not, then I’m definitely not excited for the new ones!
CoffeeChesirecat [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Not that I know of or that affected anyone at my store.
Ok-Mix-5129 -14 points 1y ago
The new ovens produce small amounts of microwave radiation, which not harmful, but can make you feel Sick after using it for a while
ShyCoconut0_0 13 points 1y ago
Yikes, who thought it was a good idea to approve an oven that could make you feel sick
CoffeeChesirecat [OP] 7 points 1y ago
Um how is this not harmful?
