Maybe you should coach your fellow partners and actually teach them these important skills instead of bashing them on reddit. I would expect better behavior from a SSV.

It's important to read a text thoroughly and understand what someone is saying before commenting. Please notice how I'm asking for suggestions in how to improve partner Standards. I'm recognizing the issues and asking for help. Not bashing anyone.

This, all of this. Or not knowing how to make iced coffee, like the milk doesn’t go in first, there’s a way to do it so it’s always consistent. Ugh I’m tired of no one following standards, always being on their phones, having drink ON BAR, in drive thru, at warming, wherever they are there’s a drink. Doesn’t matter how many times I’ve told them not to

These bad habits during a lull is what makes peak such such a struggle!
JCaligirl4202 points1y ago
I’ve never had this problem in my almost four years a shift and 6 years as a barista. The new hires just don’t care

Out of curiosity what is your position?
Coaching the behavior is a delicate balance depending on your position depending if they’re peers.
Most of them are easily reminded, hey phones shouldn’t be out in the floor, don’t forget your apron, etc.
Things like drinks, it’s straight up a food violation and if reminders don’t work, my baristas know I’ll just straight up take their drink and toss it.
Dishes and pumps comes down to training, if they’ve never done it then they need to be taught

100% agree. I'm a supervisor. I'm comfortable reminding and coaching, but I'm just struggling with having to keep an eye on them constantly.

man my SSVs and SM text on the floor all the time if I get a second i’m lookin at my phone. i’ll wash my hands after who cares

i agree that standards are standards. but absolutely do NOT police people’s bathroom usage. as someone with digestive and bladder disorders myself, it’s infuriating
Background_Notice731-1 points1y ago
The few people going to the bathroom are always the same. They don't have digestive/bladder issues. They just like to "hang out" every so often...

> They don't have digestive/bladder issues.
How could you possibly know this?

The only one I really understand is the drink one and only if it’s water, however it’s probably bc at my store we can’t run and get our water so we hide it on floor. But honestly its reminding people 500 times and being the bad guy that gets stuff done.
Creative_Shopaholic2 points1y ago
Speaking as a barista that has all of these issues at my store, it’s super frustrating. I think a big issue is a lack of communication (at my store anyway). One day my manager will tell everyone about all the rules and that they needed to be followed, but they are not ever enforced. No one gets in trouble for not following the rules and no one gets coached or reminded about the rules. All of the supervisors have to be on board and make sure that everyone is following the rules. I’m not sure on how to do that because I am not a supervisor. But from a baristas perspective, that’s what needs to be done. If people know they can get away with it, then they are going to keep doing it. I think it’s important to note that it’s going to be a learning curve because your store (and mine) are so used to the norm being to not follow certain rules and standards. So give them some leeway, but make sure to call them out. It might even help to be like “hey, just to let you know, if a dm sees you doing that, you can get in trouble” Also, give people reasons as to why it’s important to follow certain standards. Like it’s important to have someone else mark out your drink because someone could report you for stealing.

This is helpful! Thanks 😊

those first two bullet points should be emphasized in their training.
the next four bullet points should be brought up by management, you need to talk to your sm or asm about these behaviors and they will bring it to the workers attention.
the last two bullet points are stupid and you should let them make their own drink. i’m the only one who can make my drink how i like.

the only thing i would actually care about on this list is the cleaning stuff, drinks on the floor, and texting IF it is impairing their ability to do their job. if shit’s getting done and they just wanna check their phone or send a text i don’t see why thats so horrible. cleaning and drinks on the floor should be obvious; if upper management or an inspector sees that, YIKES! and no one should be served stuff from nasty pumps. if people keep leaving their aprons, straight up, just take them and keep them for yourself. “where’s my apron????” should’ve taken it home! with punching in/making their own drinks…. again, if its not disruptive, why care? i’m sure there are other standards you yourself don’t follow, too.
also, don’t fucking police people’s bathroom usage. you do not know what they have going on. you are not owed someone’s health information if they do not want to disclose it to you. plus, in the event they have a chronic illness that effects their bathroom habits….. do you *really* wanna hear details about their pee and poop?
Background_Notice731-2 points1y ago
Chronic illness is not the issue here. It's leaving a planted position to use their phone in the bathroom.

I've started dumping drinks honestly. One day there was 4 unmarked drinks on bar under the espresso machine or near the brewer. Waters one thing but in our tiny story you totally can run to get water even. As far as the ringing in their own drinks, just remind them that it is a 100% fireable offense with no second chances. Completely up to dm and high apparently, they came to my old store and fired 2 shifts, and like 4 baristas just because of ringing on other tills, ringing own drinks etc.if they are willing to risk their job, let them get fired. It's weird, cause I hate being the bad guy or holding everyone to standards that kill the mood or make people not like working with me, cause I love to make the floor fun for everyone and keep the mood up, but the texting and not following any standards really gets to you.
uwumoment2 points1y ago
that’s literally crazy. people who suck up to management make me sick. let them make their own drinks, my shifts have given me the okay multiple times. my dm is barely fucking there 2 days in the year they won’t care
