What do we do when tax season starts and none of us have been logging our tips? (self.starbucksbaristas)

Probably nothing. In my experience most people don't report their tips in the food service industry and nothing ever happens. If you want to be above board you can report them all at once when you file taxes but then you'll end up paying both your portion of taxes on them and the payroll tax that starbucks would have paid if they'd been reported weekly.
dallizzlee 77 points 1y ago
You don’t make enough in tips honestly. You’ll be fine.
Hoax_Pudding_Cup 50 points 1y ago
What's the IRS gonna do? If they want my tips they can come find my ass.
Shot-Consequence8815 50 points 1y ago
i have literally never done mine and i’ve been at my store like 7 months . oopsie
philosopher_cat_lady 30 points 1y ago
Nothing. Starbucks puts the burden on the barista to report tips because they know y'all won't bother to (I did when I worked for Starbucks and I was the only one at my store who did). They even make it difficult by making you do it at the store on the computer rather than at home or on the store iPad. Then Starbucks gets to pay less in payroll taxes to the IRS. (I didn't report my tips because it was the law, I did it because I don't think Starbucks should cheat on its taxes. Now that I work at Target, I don't report my tips because \[1\] it would be so much fucking work to keep track of the cash I take home each day and \[2\] I'm not sure how much Target likes the idea of us getting tips and I don't want them to know how much we get because then they might be encouraged to stop letting us get tips or dock our pay or something.) And the IRS is not going to bother to audit Starbucks because Starbucks is a global corporation and it would take more labor hours than the IRS has.

I was really trying to do it for the first couple months we were supposed to start, but then I noticed every week when I logged in, it didn’t show what I had reported from any prior weeks. I gave up after that. Then I forgot all about it until just now lol
coffeebartenderr 27 points 1y ago
if none of us do it they can’t get us all right 😰😂
midgethepuff 23 points 1y ago
I mean…unless you’re depositing those tips into your bank account, I think it’s safe to say no one will really know you had them to begin with. Think about it - Starbucks used to report for us - I think it was like 50 cents an hour. My store always made more than that so realistically I should have been claiming the difference. But I never did and nothing has ever happened so lol.
Bhaisaab86 13 points 1y ago
13 year partner. I’ve “claimed” tips like four times in total. If you look at your pay stubs, we already get taxed on tips. So this is just a way for them to tax us even more.
sheep_heavenly 3 points 1y ago
It changed last year. We get taxed only on digital tips. Cash tips aren't reported so we aren't taxed on them and Starbucks doesn't pay their share of the payroll tax on them unless we report it on time.
OneRoseDark 10 points 1y ago
Nothing. Most servers don't log cash tips either. When I was a server most of my coworkers logged $0 in tips every night. I never logged more than $10 a night. No one was ever the wiser.
mini_unknown_error 9 points 1y ago
No clue but I'm hoping I won't be here by then to find out lol

Tell the siren to get fucked.
Fun-Tumbleweed-9732 4 points 1y ago
No one ever told me we were supposed to report our tips?? 😭
D8NisOK 4 points 1y ago
What tips?
cbcbstargirl 4 points 1y ago
i’m not gonna say you don’t have to but it’s highly unlikely you will get caught if you don’t
agibb55 4 points 1y ago
Digital tips are already declared. Technical, you are supposed to repot cash tips, but considering average cash tips are sub $20/week. I think you will be fine.
You can call the PCC and report retroactive
Haemmur 3 points 1y ago
What tips?
NervosaNervous 3 points 1y ago
Unless you’re making over like $20/day in tips, the IRS will not care.
XxTRUEPINOYxX 2 points 1y ago
Idk IRS seems to make a big deal about money. 👀
D8NisOK 2 points 1y ago
"broken windows" theory. IRS cracks down on the little guys to stop the large tax fraud from happening.
dylsWRLD740 2 points 1y ago
if you don’t report them they don’t exist nobody reports tips in the food industry dor the most part
idealgothgf 2 points 1y ago
i got fired and couldnt report my tips since i no longer have access to partner hub 🥰 those secret LS tips be hittin tho
sero5074 2 points 1y ago
Nothing. Don’t bother logging them.
rlogranite 2 points 1y ago
I doubt that the IRS come after you about your tips from Starbucks.
hottea_bae 1 points 1y ago
I got a tax Levy for $300 bucks last year. A bit annoying but if you’re super worried about it I would just claim $300 as a base line on your taxes.
Darcie_Autham 1 points 1y ago
Under $600 in tips and the IRS doesn’t even bother. You should be fine unless you work hella hours
rosallia 1 points 1y ago
Following bc i don't know either
sholbyy 1 points 1y ago
Oops… In 8 years I never reported them and nothing ever happened lol
Karona24 1 points 1y ago
It’s on my pay stub as digital tips & been a bartender & had to claim a percentage of my tips
pres_ofcanada 1 points 1y ago
Straight to jail!
femalehomosapien18 1 points 1y ago
Ive never done it. Nothing happens
RegularAsk143 1 points 1y ago
When I worked there there was a line on every paycheck that starbucks claimed $.50 for every hour for you. If this is still the case that is totally acceptable. I worked for the bux for 13 years and not once did I ever claim tips beyond that.
OneRoseDark 9 points 1y ago
They don't do that anymore.
-beam-me-up- 0 points 1y ago
Don't worry about it. We get digital tips they tax and that shows on our W2s. I don't think I've ever heard of anybody logging cash tips in any of the stores I've worked at, and I've never heard of any repercussions against them
Ceja-01 -2 points 1y ago
Starbucks automatically puts in an estimate of what your tip rate is if you don’t input your tips yourself. So I guess it doesn’t matter
cyan_reynolds -1 points 1y ago
I believe sbux actually has a minimum tip that they automatically input unless you input your own. You can check your pay stub to see what they're putting down for you.

I don't know anyone that inputs their tips, and no managers that care. It's kinda the same level of usefulness as the section for illegal income on your taxes.
