DTO Pet Peeves (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by a_rolley
I'm a Starbucks barista at a store that blessedly doesn't have a drive thru, so I know all of the things that make my life hard at the register, but are there any things specific to DTO that y'all find really annoying so I can avoid them?
I know DTO times are really stressed so I'm trying to to make anyone's life worse💀.

-when someone pulls up to the order point and immediately screams 'HeLLo?' Bonus points if you greet them and then they say, 'hold on I need a minute.' Don't rush me if you haven't decided what sugary nightmare you're ready to overpay for yet.

-when people think that 'im sorry I couldn't hear you over that traffic' is a valid excuse to start screaming at the box and spelling out words like we're 6 years old.

-'hi I have two separate orders' why go to the drive thru with someone you don't like enough to give 5 dollars for a pink drink?

-when you ask them if they want anything to eat (food should come first to help w drive times) and they decided to say the food they want after all their drinks.

-when people act like we're a vending machine instead of humans on the other side. 'Hey welcome to starbucks, what can I get started for you :)' 'VENTI CARAMEL CRUNCH. EXTRA WHIP. EXTRA CARAMEL. NO COFFEE.' Like holy fuck dude calm down.

Omg the food thing! Half the time people don't even let me finish asking if they'd like any food to begin with!

- People who try to speak from passenger or backseat. It’s constant enough to the point where I usually say “I’m sorry but I can’t hear you unfortunately” and then the driver talks to me in the most condescending way like I’m an idiot who doesn’t listen.

- PEOPLE ORDERING TIKTOK DRINKS IN THE DRIVE THRU WITHOUT HAVING THE RECIPE. I’m over these “secret menu” names and then they get annoyed when I ask them what they mean, but when I ask if they have the recipe then suddenly they know what to order.

- MEN CONSTANTLY INSULTING MY INTELLIGENCE. OVER COFFEE.

- People talking on their Bluetooth, people who roll up their windows while I’m trying to hand them their order, people who do mobile pick-up IMMEDIATELY AFTER sending the order through the app.

- Orders with 4-5 different drinks with specific customizations and expecting it to be done ASAP.

- People who get pissy over not having any items. Just drive away and get something else to eat then??

- PEOPLE WHO ADD MORE ITEMS TO THEIR ORDER AT THE WINDOW. One thing is fine, but more than 2 and you might as well go back through the line and re-order.

- NOBODY SPEAKS DIRECTLY TO THE SPEAKER AND THEN THEY GET MAD AT YOU FOR TELLING THEM TO SPEAK UP A LITTLE BIT OR REPEAT THEMSELVES.

Tl;dr I do DTO/DTR by myself for the majority of my shifts lol

I’ve started counting every day I work the number of husbands that don’t order for themselves. They are always the driver and have their wives order from the passenger seat.

Or when it's a totally clueless husband alone and you have to be a damn mind reader to figure out what they're trying to order for their wife.

People ordering from the passenger’s side🥲

2 or even 3+ separate orders

Asking a million questions about different drinks or food and then just going with their “regular”. Yea, people do this in cafe but in dt, it seriously holds up the line and it’s harder to explain over the speaker than being able to point at the menu or the display case to try and help them decide.

Just overall not being able to hear people because they don’t speak up or they literally turn away from the speaker box.

I tell people all the time “ I’m sorry, I can’t hear from the passengers side” and instead of having the driver order, they lean over the driver. Like, okay 🤨

I know I’m going to say a lot of what others are saying so I apologize in advance:
1.) pulling up and saying hello the second you pull up
2.) coming through drive before the 7-10 minutes it says we’ll make your drink on the app for mobile orders
3.) the 2+ orders per car (like seriously put it on 1 bill and deal with it later)
4.) the acting like we’re McDonald’s and ordering 5 sandwiches and 3 pastries all warmed, with no drinks (which like thanks but no thanks)
5.) being rude when ordering
6.) when we ask for you to repeat your order, if you act like we’re burdening you
7.) the spell everything out for us
8.) the “what size” or “iced or hot” and you going onto the next drink order without answering
8 b.) the “what size” or “iced or hot” responding with “yes”
9.) the 500 modifications
10.) the fricken Caramel Macchiato upside down like seriously. It’s annoying.
11.) The fricken “can I get a medicine ball” then complaining when we are out of things or having us make it with peach juice or different types of teas
12.) the ordering from the other side of the car
13.) the not talking loud enough then getting annoyed when we ask you to speak louder (our boxes are old af and staticy)
14.) when you’re on your phone having a whole ass conversation and when we ask what you would like getting pissed we interrupted your conversation
15.) people ordering tiktok drinks and either not knowing what’s inside or gets mad at us for not having it (ie: the under the sea drink which we don’t have and never will)
16.) throwing your money or card at us and when it falls getting mad at us for it (like maybe if you weren’t parked on the moon I would have been able to get the money)
17.) ordering at the fricken window!!!! Please don’t do this.
18.) the 4+ very different fraps (ex: mocha cookie crumble, vanilla bean, caramel ribbon, and a matcha frap)
19.) the “this doesn’t look right” without explaining what’s wrong with it
20.) siting in the window for 5 years after we finish your transaction and you have your drink. Like deal with whatever you’re dealing with away from the window.

- People having music on or being on the phone while ordering and then getting mad when we can't understand what the hell they're saying.
- People not answering when I ask if they'd like anything else. How hard is it to say "No, that's it" or "I'm still deciding"???
- People with loud cars not turning off their engine and also getting mad when we can't hear them.
- People pulling up ridiculously far from away the window and then not putting any effort into reaching out of their car to pay or take their order, so I end up having to stick half my body out the window.

*Pulls out novel of a list*
-Adding drink(s)/food at the window.
-Ordering from passenger side
-After sitting in the line for like 10 mins and saying “hold on I need a minute”
-Saying “no,” or ignoring me when I ask if they want any food items and end up getting food items 🙄
-Ordering 10+ drinks bc like why?
I can go on and on but I’ll stop there
