Need advice on possible mishandling of a partner that tested passive for Covid (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Caramel_Muchacho
Yesterday, I was made aware of a partner that tested positive, but got the results *while* they were at work, s as they came in due to being asymptomatic. Several people worked with her that day, she was on bar, etc.

I’m considering taking action against my SM, as they advised another partner to “calm down about all this Covid stuff”, and didn’t communicate this positive test to everyone in the store. This is not the first time they have downplayed the seriousness of Covid, nor is it the first instance of concerning behavior out of our SM. Previously, the shift supervisor team was told in a group text not to ‘go into a panic’ when one of us had spent several hours in close contact with someone that had tested positive the next day. In the meantime, we were in the midst of discussing what our next steps should be, who has worked with them/should potential get tested, etc. This coupled with the fact that the SM was a hold out on getting vaccinated for politically motivated/“I’m not getting the vaccine because my church told us that it’s made with dead babies” reasons, compounds our concerns for the health and well-being of not just the partners, but the partners’(including mine) families, and that of the customers.

Please advise on what the corporate procedure is for positive partners, and how Covid is supposed to be handled in general, as I think that under this SM, we may be in the dark where this is concerned.

Any advice is appreciated.

The partner who got the test results while at work. Did she let the SM know right away? Did the SM send her home right away? Did the SM send home any known not vaxxed partners actively working with her? If your SM did all those things as soon as they knew then they did nothing wrong.

SM was not in store at the time, but SSV on duty informed SM right away, and the partner left immediately. I don’t know the vax status of my coworkers, so I can’t speak to that.

We're in a very similar situation at our store. I actually even reported my SM recently for having scheduling issues so we'll see how that goes. I also want to know what the protocol is on isolation because I was told to come in when both my unvaxxed parents (whom I live with, I'm vaxxed) tested positive, so a lot of info is still really vague.

While I strongly disagree with your SM choosing to not be vaccinated, I don’t see anything else wrong that they have done.

Exposure alone does not require quarantine or isolation if you are vaccinated, unless those partners who were exposed start feeling symptoms or test positive. They don’t have to get tested if they don’t want to, but it’s strongly recommended to test 4-5 days after exposure. The SM is correct that there’s no need to panic about this.

In the meantime, partners who were exposed should continue to work (depending on vaccination status) per Starbucks policy, which is based on CDC guidance. If they test positive or start experiencing symptoms, then at that point they should not work.

Based on the situation, the only partners that would have to isolate are the partners that worked and are not vaccinated.

It sounds like you have something personal against your SM not wanting to get vaccinated because he goes to church? You should probably have a discussion with him about the way you are feeling because not being able to trust your SM lends to an extremely toxic work environment.

You’re reading things into it where the religion angle is concerned, but the toxic work environment is already there in some respects, and it was there before I was even at that store. The SM is great in some respects, but terribly unprofessional and inappropriate in others.
