An angry customer threw a cake pop at me in the drive thru(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Repulsive_Spinach927
I'm not sure how I responded so calmly. Autopilot I guess. There were only five baristas in the store so I was solo DTR. Café and Mobile were turned off, so only drive thru was running.
A couple ordered and came to the window to pickup. I handed them a cake pop, along with their first drink (a venti pink drink) which the woman was quick to tell me was incorrect as she wanted it with sweet cream cold foam.
I hadn't made the drink in the first place, but I offered to remake it for them, as it was a genuine mistake. The couple quickly became upset, insisting I take the drink back through the window to add cold foam to it. The man cursed at me under his breath when I explained why I couldn't do that. I took the beverage sticker and remade it correctly. Then I passed their next beverage and that's when they both snapped.
"This is supposed to have whipped cream," the woman shouted from the passenger seat.
I pointed to the whipped cream floating on top of her tall iced sugar cookie latte, and assured that the whipped cream was in fact present, to which she responded, "None of this is what I asked for! Go get your manager, RIGHT NOW! This is ridiculous!"
She'd taken a bite out of the cake pop and continued to curse at me through the window while I backed away to call my ssv over, and when I turned back to face the window the woman dropped the cake pop back into the pastry bag and hurled it at me through the window, shouting, "Bitch!"
She had pretty great aim. I'll give her that.
I didn't know how else to respond, other than chuckle in disbelief and relay what had just happened over the headset.
"I just got assaulted by a customer. This lady seriously just threw a cake pop at me and called me a bitch, and they want to speak to a manger."
Ssvs gathered to the window and the woman proudly confirmed what she'd done. "Yes I did throw it! I sure did! Fucking bitch doesn't want to do her damn job." Her partner continued to dish out more insults and profanity toward me, and when my ssv asked him to stop, he shouted that it was his right to speak that way since he's a "grown ass man". He then splashed the iced latte onto another ssv, and demanded a refund- which ended up being store credit.
Then they refused to leave, and the police were called.
TL;DR: rude customers cussed me out in the drive thru and assaulted me with a cake pop. Then spilled a drink on ssv, and got away before the police arrived.

Honestly would’ve lost my shit on these people. Genuinely wouldn’t care about being fired. Good on you for staying calm tho. No way I could have. You don’t deserve that shit. At least be proud of yourself for not reacting.

I'm seriously still not sure how I did it. I know this sort of stuff comes with the territory, but we all deserve better. Thank you for reading.
Edit: "story" to "sort"

The company made them that way. Just stop giving out the store credit and see how they react.
Repulsive_Spinach927 [OP]21 points1y ago
You're absolutely right. Any complaint, no matter how trivial, is met with profuse apologies and a reward of some sort which encourages some customers to act way out of hand or to treat partners rudely just to complain and get a free drink or pastry. It's frustrating and it only leaves us feeling unsupported even though we are doing our jobs correctly and treating customers well.

Yes do not reward bad behaviors. Reward good ones.

Tbh starbies is such a toxic environment. I like to proclaim it as “toxic positivity”, they create an atmosphere where you have to be positive, happy, mentally stable even tho you’re working during a pandemic, shortages, and short staffing. You also have SSVs and SMs who will always side with the customer and not their partners. It’s sad and I’m so sorry this happened to you, you did amazing:))
Repulsive_Spinach927 [OP]5 points1y ago
Right! It's the fake positivity that I find so exhausting. I really appreciate you taking the time to read this, and thank you for the kindness and support.

My ssv straight up opened our lobby door and told a customer he HAD to go through drive through to get his mobile order and walked away 😂 he was dumbfounded. It always blows my mind how people think they’re special and don’t have to follow rules.

I don’t even care about being fired at this point, someone called me a bitch, I said you’re a fucking bitch right back. I don’t get paid to be disrespected.
Repulsive_Spinach927 [OP]7 points1y ago
And you're not wrong for being fed up. Partners are people too and just because we're at work it doesn't mean we should take shit from anyone. No job is worth being disrespected by anyone, especially not food service.

nah i would have climbed out the window and beat a bitch up. these hands are rated e for everyone 😐✋

In hell one day (which that is where they are headed) they will be met with a Siren throwing cake pops at their heads for eternity 😂
Repulsive_Spinach927 [OP]3 points1y ago
Sounds like the right kind of hell for customers like them 😂

I would’ve been ready to throw hands honestly. Props to you for handling it so calmly.

Thank you.

I love your response to the crazy
Repulsive_Spinach927 [OP]5 points1y ago
Thank you. My fellow partners and ssvs were shocked by how calmly I responded. They thought I was joking when I told them the customer had thrown a cake pop at me. Then they heard the shouting customers and realized I was serious.

Some of you have forgotten that there are people who are DUI, and with passengers UI (under intoxication). Which may result in a Karen-like behavior. Not excusing them...

What's worse is that these people were sober. And I have a feeling that they wouldn't have been so bold, if they were inside the store rather than in a car.

I would've shut the window, wrote down the license plate # and called the cops.
