are you allowed to request off on the holidays?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by TrueFondue
i have my birthday on independence day, so i just figured i would request it off. but my sm denied the request because it’s a holiday..
if anyone has any information or advice on this please let me know. i tried looking through some of the manuals but really couldn’t find anything.
edit: thank you for the kind comments you all, i’m thinking that i’ll try and request it again and talk to my sm that it’s my birthday. if it doesn’t go well and i end up getting scheduled i’ll just call off that day :)
edit 2: i forgot to clarify, that i had requested off around 9 months in advance for independence day and that had been denied. i will request off for that day in a week or so, cause i had just requested for a week to travel and i feel like it is more likely to get approved if my requests are spread out than at the same time
luvduvbunny108 points1y ago
Yep! I requested holidays off and they were approved! Worse things worse is that you can call out! It's your birthday and you should celebrate!
TrueFondue [OP]33 points1y ago
thank you! i’ll probably end up calling off then if i get scheduled, i think my store just has a policy on not requesting off for the holidays which is weird
aavery9927 points1y ago
That, or check with other partners about coverage. I'm pretty sure the 4th is a 1.5x day, and someone would probably want that pay.
TrueFondue [OP]3 points1y ago
true true, i’m hoping people will wanna work on the fourth. otherwise i’ll just end up calling off
aavery994 points1y ago
It's what I always do when I need a day off and it's short notice or they won't give it to me for some reason. People are generally open to taking holidays since it's extra pay, and tips are often reserved for those that work it.
Seriously_jst_4real5 points1y ago
I'd ask if there was a particular reason why it wasn't approved. Could possibly be that it is too far out to input it. But I don't ask off very often
midgethepuff7 points1y ago
It being too far out is a BS excuse and I absolutely would not accept it as an employee.
iqueefkief1 points1y ago
i don’t know, this is the only place i’ve worked having the luxury of schedules made 2 weeks in advance. it makes sense to place a limit on how late you can request off due to that. forgoing an emergency, anyway.
scheduling is one of the things sbux has always done right by me after 5 years, multi location worker, but it likely takes a lot of good communication too.
ElijahLordoftheWoods2 points1y ago
Last year I made sure to request off for my once monthly group therapy in advance for the whole year in February. If my SM was able to approve Decembers 10 months before it occurred, requesting off now shouldn’t be an input issue.
overturned231 points1y ago
That’s is a whole load of BS. I’m not sure if the system will block from requesting off too far in advance but I’ve requested time off in May and it was approved. It’s never too early and the SM will appreciate it. The SM in this case is an ass
reclusivegiraffe1 points1y ago
i’d suggest also talking to your manager abt it, explaining that it’s your birthday and you will find a way to have the day off.
adelaIsInACave25 points1y ago
My manager made it his business to ensure no one got scheduled on their birthdays here. Yours is just an asshole, especially considering you’re asking 7 months in advance like ???????
If your manager has the gall to still schedule you, I encourage you to call out. Enjoy your day 🖤
Appropriate_Ad286214 points1y ago
Yeah. Try to do it a month advance. The earlier you put it in the most likely they wont say no
TrueFondue [OP]33 points1y ago
when i requested it was 9 months in advance 😭
4filth53 points1y ago
your manager is a fucking dick for that.
iqueefkief-6 points1y ago
maybe that’s too early?
distraughtcato2 points1y ago
There’s not really such thing as too early, usually the earlier the better
iqueefkief1 points1y ago
yeah, it was a question because i really couldnt understand the thought process behind why a manager would feel that way
overturned2313 points1y ago
I requested my birthday, christmas eve, thanksgiving and new year’s eve off and they were all approved
paintthatface5 points1y ago
You need to say you’ll be out of town. That is ridiculous your manager is denying you. If they still say no you should probably discuss that with your DM cause that is not living up to Starbucks values
iqueefkief3 points1y ago
absolutely, and a lot of sbux stores have volunteer lists for the biggest ones like thanksgiving and christmas
TrueFondue [OP]1 points1y ago
we had a list like that over the holiday season. we were required to work 3/6 days that was posted. but i’m thinking that there won’t be something like that for the fourth
iqueefkief1 points1y ago
is transferring to a different location an option for you? you don’t have a good store manager.
TrueFondue [OP]1 points1y ago
i think i’m able to transfer, idk if you need to be working there for a specific time before a transfer but i have been working at starbucks for around 6 months now. i do like the people i work with, just my manager could be the problem
iqueefkief2 points1y ago
6 months is the minimum. the store manager makes a huge impact on the store and on the ease of your life.
i’ve worked at 5 different stores and i haven’t met anyone i haven’t liked a lot. it’s really worth trying! talk to baristas from other stores and see how they feel about their SM and make a decision based off that.
you can make friends anywhere, and firing a bad boss has a high chance of improving the quality of your life
capybaraRage2 points1y ago
SM here- you can absolutely request holidays off. For my store personally, the only reason might deny a request is that 5 people have already asked off and it would be hard to schedule. Usually I see if we can work something out.Plus we try and rotate the big holidays so that if you worked it the year before you can have off the next year. But I can't imagine more than you requesting that day 9 months in advance already. And it's not even one of the biggies so it sounds like your SM is being a jerk.
I wouldn't just call out because it's very obvious when that happens. I would ask you SM whats up, why you can't ask off for that one day, and talk to the DM if they just won't be flexible. You're doing everything right by asking in advance (which as the person who does the schedule THANK YOU!!)
TrueFondue [OP]1 points1y ago
Thank you, it’s really nice to get another SM’s perspective on this. I always try and request off as early as I can cause it can be a hassle doing schedules.
My SM did approach me when he turned down my request, he said that it we can’t actually get holidays off. But he said that it wouldn’t be hard to not schedule me again because people will want to work (I kinda find this hard to believe because it’s a holiday, but also it is time and half…). Should I prompt my SM again with the request, or just wait it out in hopes that I won’t get scheduled/try and find a cover if I do get scheduled?
capybaraRage2 points1y ago
You're welcome! I'm happy to help!
I would wait until a little closer and ask about it again. If your district is anything like mine (an effing madhouse with covid and closures) he might be feeling overwhelmed and super stressed. Bringing it up after he came to you might put a bad taste in his mouth, you know? Asking about it in June might be a little better.
TrueFondue [OP]2 points1y ago
This is really helpful, I don’t wanna have a poor work relationship with my manager, so I’ll probably bring it up again in June. I feel like that’s when things should be getting better with covid, hopefully
capybaraRage2 points1y ago
We can only hope! Good luck and happy (very early) birthday!
femalehomosapien182 points1y ago
After 3 years at the siren I request every important holiday off IDGAF. I’ll work stupid ones like Fourth of July though for that 1.5 time
TrueFondue [OP]1 points1y ago
i was never a fan of working holidays, and i swear that when i applied on the site i marked down that i don’t wanna work on holidays. but i guess it didn’t correlate. otherwise i would be requesting off every holiday too 😂
Hazel_is_Trans2 points1y ago
Request the date and then add comments birthday
Bryancreates2 points1y ago
My old store had some policies that were kinda flexible. Mostly around thanksgiving/Christmas Eve/New Years eve/ New Year’s Day. Pick 2. I usually picked thanksgiving morning (which was always a nightmare) and New Year’s Eve. I tried to be appreciative of other partners time but that was years ago so It’s probably a shit show now. It was messy back then.
TrueFondue [OP]2 points1y ago
oh jeez yeah i had worked last thanksgiving morning and it was a unexpected nightmare, did not know that many people get coffee on a holiday.
Bryancreates1 points1y ago
And they are all grumpy because they are driving to relatives who lives far away, and don’t order Starbucks with the whole family in that scenario. It’s crazy.
TrueFondue [OP]2 points1y ago
yeah it was an interesting day, though we did make a really good amount of tips and then got out early which made things up
nicoolspams2 points1y ago
That’s an asshole move on ur managers part, my sm always made sure everyone had their birthdays off (unless they requested to work) and if he missed it on the schedule he would give them the day off and work it himself. I’m sorry ): hopefully they will change it and give it to you off
SomeComputer29922 points1y ago
I had my birthday on thanksgiving and was easily able to call it off, so I think you won’t have any problems!
TrueFondue [OP]1 points1y ago
yeah i figured that calling off wouldn’t be a bad thing to do, or even just having the expectation that i’m not going to be there, hopefully i don’t even get scheduled i just don’t wanna ask people to cover for me ::
Dsgrcfl2 points1y ago
My manager doesn’t officially accept requests but does take them into consideration. You can try talking to your manager about it and tell them it’s for your birthday and they might accept it then.
dthomp08061 points1y ago
You're allowed to request any day that you want. It just might not get approved.
CorpBrig1 points1y ago
You can, but I'd recommend asking at least one month in advance. Six weeks is preferable but anything less than one month is gonna be very tight.
diphenhydranautical2 points1y ago
yeah they asked seven months in advance
CorpBrig1 points1y ago
haha I cant believe i didnt read independence day. I should pay attention more.
rterrebo1 points1y ago
😂😂😂😂 you're funny! In the grocery business, most major holidays are blacked out which means they are Mandatory to work. Sucks but at least, I'm getting paid!
