The hospital might not even allow you into the waiting room. Double check before heading in. I was in the ER 1.5 weeks ago and no one was allowed in with me until I got a room (which I never got, spent the whole visit sitting in the hallway). Call in and tell them you have a family emergency and won't be in. As a shift, I'd rather run the store shorthanded then have someone that's rightfully distracted and not going to be able to concentrate at all.

Hope your grandpa gets better soon.

Family first. There will always be jobs. Coffee is not more important than your grandfather hon.

Family ALWAYS comes first, fuck your manager.

As my wise shift once said
“Family first, work….. second”

Yes! Most states have protection for emergency family leave. And that’s all you have to say. “I have a family emergency, and I won’t be able to come in for my shift today. I’ll keep you updated about my other shifts. “

Shift supervisor here. Obviously if they don’t allow visitors in the ER then I might all be for nothing anyway so check on that first. But as a shift I would probably just tell you to go since it’s hard to work when you’re that distracted. If it’s serious and you’re worried then there’s no point in you trying to clock in and try to work with all that on your mind. But obviously that depends on who’s running your store at the moment. Some shifts and managers are just heartless robots who don’t take normal logic into account when making decisions like this.

I find it hard to believe that you can just visit people in the ER right now but if you can, then yes definitely do it. If your manager is salty, who cares. Family is more important. Though I do think it may be safer not to visit with covid unfortunately :/

As leslie knope says “three things matter: friends, waffles and work. Or waffles, friends and work. But work is third.”

If you aren't sure if they are going to have issues with it, food poisoning is always a safe route. Say you have diarrhea and vomiting. Now don't do it every time you get scheduled on a Sunday shift you don't want to work like I had a barista do a while ago until we had to have a sit down and say we're done with that BS, but as long as you don't do it constantly, it's the easiest way to get no follow up questions.
