Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

I had a shift say I needed the shift to approve filling in for someone who had family matters come up (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by TylerIsWhiteTrash
Essentially a coworker said they needed help covering a shift that I don’t normally work. Nobody else seemed to be willing so since I needed hours anyways I offered to fill in for them. I was then told we needed to have the shift approve of this switch for us. When I was hired and every other time I’ve done this I’ve only been told by my managers to make a groupchat with the people switching/taking shifts and at least one manager to inform management of this situation (i’m assuming to prevent punch/pay issues). Are there guidelines to be followed for taking or switching shifts? Can a shift supervisor just veto someone coming in to fill what would otherwise be a no show??

I think it’s due to concerns for overtime, my SM told me she has to approve it too

overtime (unless i’m mistaken) is 40 hours and for this week i’d be at 20 so i don’t think that’s it but idk

Yeah, I figured. Worth a shot. Sorry!

Is your store on block schedules? We don't have mids at my store right now just morning and night and we try not to come in contact with each other during shift change. I'm a morning person and if I wanted to switch with a night person I'd (we'd) have to clear it not only with the ssv for the day of the switch, but also our sm due to the blvk schedules and the possibility of spreading covid to either morning or night

as far as i know, we’re not. we have a lot of mid shifts and overlapping shifts at my store

the correct way to be to have it approved, i also have strict labor laws in my state (and previous state) and don’t know if they carry over to yours. but the lax way is to do a group chat with the sm and other partner but the formal way is to reach out to your sm for approval. i don’t think it’s that deep, just a different way of doing it.

that’s how i usually do it but they’re acting like the shift can just veto someone filling in because it’s an unusual shift for the barista?

the only time i’ve really seen *that* is when there’s a conflict of interest between partners, you’re at risk for being in OT, or the experience level is unfair (eg seasoned partner during peak asking a green bean mid/pm to work and not being transparent with them). ask your sm for clarification about what they want! everyone is a little different.

definitely not near overtime because i’m only getting 20 hours this week and i’m a barista trainer and solo hot bar/solo dto all the time so i don’t think it’d be a lack of training idk, sometimes my shifts can be a lil cliquey and annoying

sorry, pal! i’m not sure. i really think you should inquire with your sm as it feels a little funny.
