Sometimes the lids are just shitty. Pour your drink in the cup, then have a second cold cup ready and double cup it. The added structure makes it easier to put the lid on. You can take it out and reuse that same cup for all of your drinks, just for when you put the lid on.
That works for when the lids are the problem, but to echo the other thoughts you really don’t have to fill the drink *all* the way. Leave a little gap and don’t put a ton of whip to avoid overflows.

You might be putting too much whip on them. A rule of thumb we use is the whip should not touch the lid. Nobody has every complained they didn’t get enough whip unless they ask for extra whip.

What lids do you have? We just got new tall lids in our store, and they SUCK. They are impossible!! They have little bump-outs at quarter intervals round the lid, and are slightly more malleable than the old grande ones we have.
Generally you just put it on and pop it down. If you're spurting toppings, could be you're putting too much whip on it?

Try double cupping it when you are ready to put the lid on. Practice whip cream swirls and getting the right size mound for the lids.

I grip it all around the rim and gently ease it down. Too hard the cup breaks or the dome gets bent. Too soft and, well it won’t go on all the way. I grip it all the way around leaving no room on the rim and use my thumbs to push the point facing me down and the rest will slide down too. I hope that makes sense..
