anyways when i walked in at 930 am i was put on customer support. i needed to do a station restock, but i couldn’t do that until i did dishes. no problem, except i can’t do dishes because i’m constantly being asked for milk, ice, cups, chai, mocha etc on the fly since there were no backups. no whips no white mocha. one sweet cream, 2 lemonades no frap roast. no coffee was brewed. because we have 4 call offs and 1 isolation. we had a green bean less than 2 weeks old on CS and they were ready to quit on the spot. i found her in the back SOBBING because she was so stressed out

i’m so over it

just bc CS is an early training unit doesn’t mean green beans should be doing it. throwing a green bean on CS during a peak (if you have a very high volume store) is literally the most discouraging thing ever
canidieyet_ [OP] 26 points 1y ago
literally!!! she was SO excited to start and is absolutely amazing. it sucks to see someone want to quit so fast because shifts see they’re learning things fast and think they can do it all alone

CS was all they’d ever put me on if I wasn’t on DTR. I felt like I was having to do the work of two or three people at once and that I simply wasn’t good enough for what my coworkers needed

This is actually why i almost quit my first month… exactly this

are green beans new employees? thats so cute
OneRoseDark 9 points 1y ago
Yes, they are unroasted coffee beans.
VrginMobile 8 points 1y ago
They must be roasted by customers first before they become official employees

Something that I always tell myself is that we’re going to get through this. Don’t lose your sanity, just breathe in breathe out.

Sounds like whoever was running the floor for open did do their opening checklist. If so 20whips would be in the fridge, all backups would be ready to last past peak. Really this is making me mad because it’s sounds like all of this could’ve been avoided with proper preparation

maybe you didn't read the part where there's no staff. there's tons of stuff to do at open, not just stocking. if they had, say a 2 play at open that list would be impossible before they had to help on the floor unless they skipped cash, inventory, temps
Brilliant-Taste-4226 8 points 1y ago
I know that lol. Who ever had the keys when walking in is in charge of accessing the situation (even understaffed) and adjust. Closing the lobby, turning off Uber eats, marking out some items for unavailable until theirs time to adjust.
don’t come at me like I’m ignorant.
canidieyet_ [OP] 4 points 1y ago
you must have a saint as a DM if they let you close the lobby for something like understaffing. i had a shift go and close the lobby without approval once and got fired on the spot…the opener today wasn’t taking that chance

sometimes there’s just days where no matter what you do, shit just goes in the gutter and you can’t do anything to fix it
canidieyet_ [OP] 4 points 1y ago
yep. we were supposed to have…3 openers i think? which is usually plenty since we don’t actually get busy until 7:45ish. but it ended up being one shift and a newer barista who just moved to opens recently. the whole day got even worse after i wrote this post lol

Poor green bean… it was hard enough trying to learn when I started working in the pandemic.. she walked in at a really rough time.
spacespecterr 3 points 1y ago
same shit was happening to me, and the thing is, it’s this kind of behavior that doesn’t only ruin it for greenies… it ruins the job for those of us who have been around for a while, too. the way stores are being handled nationwide is pushing more and more folks out of and away from starbucks work.

i’m so sorry you all are going through this, as well.

It's hard to succeed when you aren't set up for it. I'm stuck on iso and feel so bad for my team because I'm one of few people at my store who takes the time to make morning's backups at night and some days those backups aren't even enough to last 'til noon. Try to talk to your team about setting eachother up for success so that when you have only 2-3 people on the floor running rush hour at least backups aren't a problem.

Whenever enough shift tasks / fires are done for me to actually do customer support tasks, I remember that CS is basically a video game quest where you need to get the magic sword so you talk to the fairy, who needs you to bring her glow-in-the-moss from the elves, who won't give you the moss until you help them find their lost sheep, who [after wandering all over the forest, you eventually learn] was kidnapped by an ogre who is very lonely so he'll give the sheep back if you bring him a friend, so now you have to find the ogre a friend to work your way all the way back to the magic sword thing. And all the while you're being interrupted by evil soot sprites trying to steal your jacket.

CS is dumb.
canidieyet_ [OP] 3 points 1y ago
this sounds much more fun than CS
lily-amber 2 points 1y ago
Omg this is so overwhelming!! I’m sorry we’re all going through it. I made my green beans a list of CS tasks to periodically check on unless asked to do something by another barista and still, the tasks are endless for them (and tbh me too).

Praying for y'all during this time.
