i wish our 10 minute breaks were 15 minutes. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by coolsexysmartvirgo
it takes like 3-4 minutes to mark out my food and drink, make my drink, then put my food in the oven, wait for it to cook, and package it. then I have to take off my headset and my apron and sit down. at that point I have 5 or 6 minutes to actually just relax before I have to put my apron and headset back on

Idk how much that would affect things but fuck that extra 5 min would be glorious so I’m not stuffing my food down and trying to squeeze in going to the bathroom

My store has a policy that your 10s dont start until you have your food and drink in hand
coolsexysmartvirgo [OP] 41 points 1y ago
Bruh I wish it was like this.. or even give us a warning before we take our ten so we can start making our drink or food before hand
rayaofsuunshine 21 points 1y ago
If its any help, if I can find a dead moment, I will mark everything out a bit before I anticipate my breaks so that then as soon as my shift tells me to go on my ten I can just grab the stickers and make it, cuts out at least a minute of time.

wierd.. everyone at my store makes their own drinks, even when our manager is on the floor w us
chowderchop 17 points 1y ago
Yeah, well I'm still making my drink because I refuse to wait on a drink.

Might as well not take a break if I am having to wait on someone to make my food and drink DURING my break.
coolsexysmartvirgo [OP] 15 points 1y ago
also, we get our drinks free so how could that be an issue if that’s what’s on the sticker? U can literally get as many syrups as u want “the right way”
uwumoment 4 points 1y ago
they really think i’m gonna out extra pumps in my drinks? i ring it up how i make it and if i don’t it’s not costing them anything
tinseltesseract 2 points 1y ago
It really depends on the SM. No one at my store cares if you make your own drink but our SM does always stress to us that if you are going to make your own you have to punch it in correctly and follow standards. He sort of implies there’s less of an allowable margin of error if you’re making it for yourself which I guess is true.

Lol we straight up were told, the second you're told to go on your break, the 10 starts.

My 10s don’t start until my ass is in a seat with my food and drink and I still take longer
adelaIsInACave 10 points 1y ago
Same. I don’t clock out for my half until i have my food and drink. Expect us to eat for 5 min, burning my tongue with hot ass food to get back on the floor? They’re shittin me, they can wait
CatVietnamFlashBack 23 points 1y ago
I've worked two different locations and both SMs allowed us to make our own food and drink. I understand the mark out policy but I don't want to watch my coworker take a thousand years to make my drink wrong and fume about it. F that.

I start my break when I sit down. I pee when I need to, not when I'm given permission.. We're human beings not robots.

Canada gets 15 minutes, so it’s certainly possible
champshere 14 points 1y ago
Your shifts sound like idiots.

Move to maryland!! It’s our law

It annoys me too. Every other job I’ve had the breaks were 15-20.
angel321ded 9 points 1y ago
funny im seeing this today , i had one 10 today and it took almost 10 minutes to get my drink and food . i didn’t start my timer until i walked away from the counter with my food . when i got back onto my floor my shift and manager sarcastically and rudely asked if i had given myself a lunch , i just laughed and told them i had timed exactly 10 minutes 🤷🏽‍♂️

Honestly, as a shift, I do not give a flying hell if my partners take a 15 minute break. In fact, I encourage it. The job is so tiring and stressful that 10 minutes is simply not enough.
Dramatic_Celery_2262 5 points 1y ago
I grab a cup of water because as soon as I take off my vest and everything that’s like 5 mins 😂😂😂😂😂😂 they go by so fast
cringeqween13 3 points 1y ago
If you only get a 10 it should automatically be a 15. 10 minutes is not enough time to restart rejuvenate.
Saint-enance 3 points 1y ago
Your store lets you mark out and make your own food and drinks? God I wish I could do that
cbcbstargirl 3 points 1y ago
wtf it’s in the labour law to get 15 minutes…

Local laws differ place to place

I'm lucky enough that out of the shifts I work with, only 1 or 2 ever make a fuss about going over your break time. I always bring my own food, so I have to heat it up in the microwave and/or oven, clear off the desk or find a place to sit in the cafe, and take off my apron, headset, mask, etc. By that time, it's normally been 3-5 minutes. I only ever get 10s (don't work long enough hours for halves most of the time), so it can be interesting. When I started though and got politely... nudged about sticking to set break times, I made it a point of telling them "This is my dinner. It is just (insert small bit of food here). I am not eating at 10pm after we close, and I had lunch shortly before coming in. As soon as I finish eating, I will be back on the floor." So, most of my breaks end up being 12-15 minutes, not really enough to complain about.

reasons to unionize: longer breaks
Epona_02 2 points 1y ago
lmao i don’t start counting my 10 until i’m sitting down and comfy
ElectricalScience8 2 points 1y ago
my 10 doesn’t start til i get my stuff and comfortably sit downnnn.
Marty_the_Smarty 2 points 1y ago
At our store, when we get sent on our 10s, we place our order, and then we take 5 minutes to work on cards or help customer support (dishes, trash, restock, whatever), and after the 5 minutes, you start your 10.
kittykat-kay 1 points 1y ago
I get 15s at my store
Karona24 1 points 1y ago
I just don’t eat or get a drink till end of shift
Necessary_Low939 1 points 1y ago
Some of our partners do take a 15/20 min break lol
Ohyanoforsure 1 points 1y ago
It’s bull you guys don’t get 15’s. In Canada we get 2 15’s and a half depending on how long the shift is.
