So I had quite a few COVID like symptoms and I felt awful! I started feeling like this just an hour before my shift, talked to my SM and she made me isolate for 5 days. She also recommended I try to get tested during that time but it was very hard to find any type of test. One of my roommates tested positive so I knew I was positive and even though my symptoms improved aside from a nasty cough I finally got a PCR test the day I was scheduled to come back to work and today a whole 24 hours later I got my results and of course I tested positive. I told my SM immediately and told her I was feeling very uncomfortable and guilty for having to come into my shift tomorrow now know officially that I’m positive. She told me according to our DM they “go off symptoms and not the tests”. Man this sucks I feel so bad, I don’t want to get anyone else sick! 😭
Edit: my SM is awesome and actually asked if I was comfortable coming back and when I said no we worked out a way where I can stay out longer and isolate and I can still get paid. I’m so glad she is understanding and not making me feel guilty 🥺

"Go off symptoms not the tests" wtf is your DM on?????

Exactly! Then why would they still suggest for me to go get tested if it doesn’t matter anyway??

For real! Ask your DM directly if that is what they mean, and if it is, ask to take it to the RM/RD that cannot fly in this day and age

Covid positive persons can test positive weeks, even months after initial onset of symptoms.

DM is correct. The reason we go by symptoms and not tests is due to the fact that the CDC changed their guidelines for isolation. You are much less likely to pass covid along after 5 days of onset of symptoms. The reason that changed is because we are still learning about this virus. New research is creating new fact based evidence. Starbucks is following CDC recommendations very closely almost as quickly as they are changed.

Also, no one HAS to come back after 5 days if they still aren’t comfortable/feeling well. The 5 day isolation is just the policy on how long you’ll get paid for isolation, based on CDC guidance. After that you just have to use sick time. If there was no limit we’d see people taking extended isolations where not necessary just to get paid while not going to work. At my store we’ve already had several people even take advantage of the 5 day isolation when they weren’t really sick since we get 2 per quarter

You're right, symptoms must have improved.

It’s 5 days after the onset of symptoms but I thought it was based upon when you got your test too. Like if you tested positive, waited 24 hours for the results, you’d get four more days off? Because like you did test positive. If you test positive you’re shedding the virus to some extent.
