anyone else hired recently who's unsatisfied with their training?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by turtlegoose2011
I was hired a couple months ago at a relatively new store. the manager apparently decided who was training me by looking at whoever was scheduled for the day and picking someone off the list. my trainer wasn't great - they didn't show me any drinks that weren't ordered on that day of training and decided what they were going to show me how to do at random. I had to learn how to do about half of the things I do from other baristas. they weren't even there on multiple days I was scheduled. my training consisted of about two or three shifts with an actual trainer and then I was basically on my own (no one told me I had finished training or anything similar). and now I occasionally get a drink that I don't know how to make bc I never learned and I feel like I annoy other baristas by having to stop what i'm doing to make them stop and explain it to me. im happy at my job but the quality of my training was poor and it's affected my job even until now. I wanted to know if anyone else has had a similar experience with their training.

Yup, you pretty much just summed up “training.” Got hired in July, was basically just flung into things on day one and left to figure it out. There is probably a booklet of recipe cards somewhere in your store... I like to keep it by the bar for reference!

we don't have cards but the recipes are online and i've started flipping through them on breaks. thanks for sharing, hopefully your experience is better now :)

I would also recommended looking at the ingredients for drinks while you’re on register! On the side it shows all the ingredients that get put into a drink you’re ringing up, if you know the basic builds of drinks this helps a lot!

oh I didn't know that! i've never seen it show up but i'll look next time :)

I first got hired 8 years ago and stayed for 6 years and it was the same for me and for every person that got hired since. Not nearly enough dedicated training time. It sucks your partners make you feel awkward or uncomfortable when you ask for help though. Sorry to hear that.
Part of the problem is that Starbucks doesn’t give stores more than like 15 additional “training” hours for a new hire and then they expect the store manager to have a vice grip on total labor. Also Starbucks doesn’t give a damn about it’s employees. I’m glad you all are enjoying your positions right now that. I’m a little surprised to be honest, but I sincerely hope it stays that way!

I enjoy the work, not necessarily the management but i'm happy and the pay is good enough for a high school student. as long as it stays that way i'll still be here :) thank you for explaining why training is like that though, that's a bit messed up.

The training “in theory” is pretty good. The training videos explain a lot. The problem is that they make no practical sense until you’ve actually gone hands on. So, all that time watching videos should get thrown out the window. Another problem I’ve seen at my store is that the Trainers aren’t using their checklists. There are checklists that guide them on what to train and in which order. Lastly, there is never going to be enough time to train. Literally, it would take months. I relied heavily on experienced partners when I started. Luckily they were more than happy to help. I would say, just keep asking questions. If they feel annoyed, that’s their problem.

I’m really sorry for the poor quality of training you got. I’m a trainer at my store and have fully trained many people - if you’d like to dm me with anything you find you struggle with or that weren’t explained well, I’d be glad to help. I can also go over the menu with you, including commonly asked for discontinued drinks.

thank you so much!! the only thing i'm struggling to find a recipe for is the blended strawberry lemonade, everything else i have written down i've since figured out!

Blended strawberry lemonade, to the best of my knowledge, is strawberry purée to the rim, lemonade to the first line, the appropriate amount of ice for the size, creme base (like a frap), and blend. You may want to double check a recipe card as I make maybe one of these a month and always very customized.

okay thank you so much!

No prob. Sorry again for your stressful experience. You deserve to be set up for success.

I found this because I also feel unprepared and it definitely helps me understand a little more!
Sorry to hear that :( I was hired 11 months ago now and pretty much same thing. I was taught how to make a latte and took a few orders with my trainer and that was literally it. Became a trainer myself 6 months ago and I go to the ends of the earth for my trainees because I know firsthand how much it sucks to have bad training. As far as drink recipes, if you guys have an ipad there’s an app called “store resources” with lots of good info. All of the beverage recipes core and lto. Also has bev routines and sequencing routines in the “coffee & beverage” tab. If no ipad, like they said above you should have a stack of recipe cards somewhere. Best of luck!

yes we have an ipad and i've started looking through recipes on my break which has helped a lot. sorry to hear about your training but I hope you're still enjoying the job, if you're still there. thank you and thank you for sharing!
