I’m an old barista and when I worked drive thru I was milked to make customer connections, now when I go thru I barely ever get a hello. Is it that bad now?(self.starbucksbaristas)

Use to be a barista and I was constantly told to make a connection with every customer, especially drive thru ones as that’s where most of our sales come from. I was told to make simple comments about their day or dive into deeper conversations if there order was taking a second. My manager even praised me when I would find something random to ask them about, (quick fire questions like what’s your favorite Disney movie? Favorite childhood game? Favorite band? Tv show etc. easy stuff that works for the after church crowd, the pre gamers, college students everyone!) I even had a tally mark to see what would be the most popular of the day! The customers loved it as the conversation was short but never felt cut off because time. However For the past few months whenever I go to my old store (most of my gen of baristas have left) none of the new baristas even try to start a conversation, not even a hello! Just talked about the price and the order will be done in a second, then they close the window to only just stand there. Are they not pushing connections anymore?

I'm both expected to make customer connections but also keep below 45 second drive times...so....yeah.

Yea that’s what took 4 months to perfect, I mostly tried to catch the vibe of the customers then comment on something.

I was told not to connect at the window in priority for speed. 45 second drive times. (I mainly work peak)

Interesting, I have been the only person in drive lane and still no connection. Very strange to me

I think it’s just a side effect of the convenience age. We got lower customer service scores when we sat and talk to customers because Other customers get pissed off if they had to wait for that two minute conversation

For me, a good portion of our customers are so nasty to us every day that it sucks any drive to connect out of us (me)

They push it a lot at my store, even if the customers refuse to talk to me in drive. I got in trouble for standing and cleaning while waiting for a customers drink because they wouldn’t talk to me at all no matter what I asked/said

They still heavily push it, but I feel like some of us are scared of catching Covid from our customers now tbh.

It’s an art. Some people are just more natural at making genuine conversation. I know that many of my fellow partners have social anxiety and feel awkward being disingenuous. I, on the other hand, have gotten people’s life stories! I just love people!

Ok I’m glad to hear it’s not being lost to the pandemic craziness. I just remembered being pushed so hard to make conversation about anything and everything

I was hired last month and they heavily pushed customer connections during my training shifts
Zealousideal-Star448 [OP]1 points1y ago
Do they during your current shifts tho? Like I had more experienced baristas whispering to me to go talk to them and a 5 second how are you is worth a billion dollars

For the most part they do. I guess it depends on the location?
