Trauma (self.starbucksbaristas)

I nearly walked out the door here at this poorly managed wasteland of a store. It’s alway some kind of daily violence. Some colorful person experiencing homelessness comes into the store. They are aggressive and confrontational. They call one of our minor baristas, the kid, a girl. We give him a free coffee. I was standing quietly not engaging, but of course i was watching him. Then he starts calling me an f’ing faggot and other anti-LGBTQ slurs I still don’t say anything. He’s upset that I’m even looking at him. I bite my lip, remain professional. Management did absolutely nothing to help intervene or deescalated the situation which surprised me. I finally said something to the misanthrope which of course really got them going—I asked them to leave and never come back. He continues to rant in an aggressive loud manner. He continues slinging anti-gay slurs to my face. Then the store manager who happens to be here for this shift, hiding in the shadows, actually takes me aside and mildly reprimands me for engaging the guy at all. Gosh i was Pissed. I couldn’t believe a) he wouldn’t stand up for me b) he would let me stand up for myself c) failed to see or care that I was obviously triggered. Instead i got sent to lunch. Unbelievable. I AM a gay guy. And I WAS bullied growing up. It is, was, and will always will be the policy of THIS HUMAN BEING to never allow anti-lgbt slurs slung at me. EVER AGAIN. (I’m still pissed.) How do I deal with this idiot store manager? I suppose I should soeak with him at sone later date. How can I transfer to a safer more mature store? (I know the answer; Ive been with the company for 2 years) Please advise. Thanks!

either the manager or the shift should’ve stepped in once he said the first slur. as a queer SSV, i am SO sorry for how this was handled. i highly recommend you file an incident report and speak to your dm about how your manager handled this. customers using slurs is NOT allowed at starbucks, but especially not when it’s being thrown at partners. not to mention the manager not stepping in? absolutely wrong. as SSV’s we are taught to be the first to interject/try to de-escalate situations like these, so i can only imagine SM’s are taught the same. again i’m so sorry that you had to deal w/this but you 100% need to go to MUCH higher up’s to discuss this.

Yeah as a transfemme person working in a relatively conservative area I've been there. Your supervisor not stepping in is something you need to take higher up and advocate for yourself. Slurs and harrassment of a minor absolutely are grounds to kick someone out. If they try to write you up don't sign off on it.

As a fellow gay man I can relate to you because I have had customer act like that towards me but ended up leaving because like you my SM stood there and said nothing until I quit on the spot and threatened to beat the $$ out of the guy. Then the SM spoke up . I admire your strength

I have learned that most managers are a$$kissers. That's their job really. That's why I could never be a manager. I have no problem telling a customer to go f#ck themselves.
