What a load of bs, my coworkers and I cuss so much it’s hilarious, sorry u got the boot for it, fuck em
booksandgreentea121 points1y ago
I guess it is just based on region and how strict ur manager is. Unfortunately mine is a…how do I say this politely…bitch?
-beam-me-up-53 points1y ago
You can tell her she is sharp as a marble. That usually makes me feel better
booksandgreentea31 points1y ago
She very rudely told me when she first talked to me about this, I said “I just don’t want anything astronomical to happen.” And she said “Well astronomical would be losing your life.”
Took me a few seconds not to say “Don’t you have 10 kids? Five of them are your partners?”
Also when I was telling her I made a mistake, almost said “You made a mistake when you were younger, right? Didn’t you get pregnant at 16-17?”
JustfcknHarley19 points1y ago
Five of her children are her partners, as in, working at those store you just got fired from? Sounds like, well, lol, ot sounds like nepotism! Certainly preferential treatment, in the least.
elodieme12 points1y ago
I wonder if you're in my district, just heard about someone getting fired for that. I feel lime unless there have been warnings, it's really shitty to do
maddawgg710-33 points1y ago
Sometimes Its not “hilarious “ when you cuss. I personally cuss all the time. But I have a coworker who is very religious and doesn’t like to hear anything of the nature. You have to respect the people around you . And not just cuss because it’s “hilarious”
Waka_flakaflame16 points1y ago
Maybe you should keep your religious beliefs separately because you sound so funn
maddawgg710-6 points1y ago
It’s not me who’s religious lmao . It’s just some people are raised differently and feel uncomfortable when people use foul language.. that’s all . Respect everyone around you (:
Victoriamarie035 points1y ago
Sorry if I have a problem with someone or something they're doing I'm going to be a fucking adult and tell the other adult who I have a problem with; especially if it's not a big issue you look childish and like you cant handle your own problems... but I mean yea whatever let me respect their "religious beliefs"
sammieduck694202 points1y ago
What happened to free speech. What happened to life being a meaningless blip while this marble floats through nothing. Maybe adults need to be okay with hearing language they might not want to when they’re in a public setting and if they really can’t handle it, should remove themselves from an environment of public activity
booksandgreentea4 points1y ago
I completely understand the respect thing, but the respect thing comes from speaking to that coworker who making you feel uncomfortable, not running to the SM immediately. I wish he had come to me first and explained why he felt that way, etc, and I would’ve apologized better.
maddawgg7102 points1y ago
Yea I feel that though. I used to cuss a lot and my manager had told me to watch what I say. And I was just confused why the coworker who was uncomfortable couldn’t say it to my face versus tell the SM to tell me. If they felt uncomfortable I understand.
booksandgreentea7 points1y ago
People think they are being adults by running to the SM, but really the SM is just another mommy/daddy.
LZARDKING63 points1y ago
Honestly take it as a blessing, you’re released from the siren go find a sane job.
booksandgreentea21 points1y ago
It’s the college I need
L_D_Helbling41 points1y ago
Wow, I didn't know that was a rule 👁️👄👁️ Here in Spain we are like 15 words out of 10 are some kind of cuss 👁️👄👁️
diphenhydranautical1 points1y ago
our manager decided that swearing on the floor is grounds for immediate firing and swearing in the back is a final warning
ProfessionalRock794030 points1y ago
It sounds like they wanted you good for other reasons and found something they could fire you for
booksandgreentea17 points1y ago
Never thought my SM liked me because I had trouble understanding things. Unfortunately, I didn’t disclose I had autism when I first got hired, bc the thought of her knowing made me uncomfortable, but I think now I should’ve disclosed it.
idealgothgf3 points1y ago
same shit happened to me. i got fired for cussing but it was really because she hated me. found a better job at an LS tho !
[deleted] [OP]2 points1y ago
[deleted]
notrachelmar19 points1y ago
it is frustrating but it is the rules. no cussing while you’re on the clock, i try to correct others to help try to avoid something like this. it’s best to stay professional even if “everyone else is doing it”
crzyshiba55 points1y ago
That is crazy how they can fire someone so quick over. Cussing and yet it takes them forever to fire someone who constantly calls out lol.. apparently it’s a process
booksandgreentea11 points1y ago
It was a combination of things. I did call my coworkers, again in a joking way, dumbass and idiot, things like that.
Unfortunately, and this is well within their right, they did not reach out to me to let me know it made them uncomfortable.
But once again, this environment was created well before i was comfortable enough to participate.
Paprmoon79 points1y ago
Dude we have so many no call no shows and they never get fired! Then almost everyone vapes…nothing. I’m shocked OP got fired over a slip, I could understand a write up but fired is too much for this.
crzyshiba1 points1y ago
Yeah I surprised they didn’t confront the OP before with a verbal then written they need documentation but yes no call no shows and calling out
coolsexysmartvirgo8 points1y ago
oh god I’ve definitely cussed a few of times over the headset while telling stories and I feel wierd now
booksandgreentea7 points1y ago
I don’t think cussing necessarily is a big deal. Mine was considered bullying/harassment because it was toward someone, regardless of it being a joke on my part.
Binx_da_gay_cat1 points1y ago
I mean, cussing is okay, it can be kinda how you use them though.
And night shift is definitely a lot more chill about cussing usually.
booksandgreentea4 points1y ago
I understand, it wouldn’t have happened if customers were in the store. But the lobby was closed that day.
notrachelmar-22 points1y ago
doesn’t really matter, it’s about being professional in the workplace. you can get rehired as it’s the hiring managers decision
booksandgreentea6 points1y ago
I know. I’ll talk to my nearby store and also have my old coworker put in a good word for me. Just assumed I would get a final written warning, but apparently not. It’s fine and it was my mistake, just wish things had gone differently.
gabby246812 points1y ago
Yeah whenever someone says something I do a quick 👀 around the store because I’m nervous after someone got fired two weeks in for saying the f word. I know it’s against the rules but they didn’t have a chance to defend themselves just instant FIRED.
Starlett_Hudson18 points1y ago
My manager cusses with us so I can’t see why you’d be fired for this. Sorry friend :(
booksandgreentea14 points1y ago
It’s okay. It was my fault after all. I did honestly think I would be just written up as well.
Unfortunately, the good things I have done went overlooked. I even brought that up and she looked at me dumbfounded and said “Do you think that gives you a free pass???”
Well..no but me taking 4/5 I have been asked to come in for, also driving in the snow with trees all over the road during a power outage seems pretty great of me as a partner..
Rita_Rossweisse9 points1y ago
Yah, unfortunately Starbucks does not take profound language lightly. If a customer or partner reports another partner for cussing, I’ve heard it’s automatic termination of employment. That’s what I’ve always been told, at least. However, I would definitely take your DM’s deal. They are offering you to work at another store instead, basically. Unless you want to move on from SBUX, no one would blame you lol.
booksandgreentea2 points1y ago
It’s the college I need.

booksandgreentea1 points1y ago
Ah see..not a very nice dad. And I live with him. This is like..a big deal!
IndividualRuin66758 points1y ago
literally people cuss at my store all the time even around customers sometimes.. whoever fired you definitely singled you out because there’s no way
imathrowayslc6 points1y ago
This "may" have been outside your managers control. If a customer hears and reports it to corporate it is an instant termination. Has happened in my district, and neither the manager or the DM could do anything to prevent it.
booksandgreentea6 points1y ago
No customers in the lobby, lobby was closed.
But yes ur right, it was in my DMs hands, and he didn’t do it to be mean to me. Just rules he had to follow.
yirium2 points1y ago
The lobby was CLOSED?!?!? What the actual hell that is so stupid, I hope you can find another store with a cooler SM.
booksandgreentea2 points1y ago
It was labeled as bullying and harassing of my fellow partners.
So this has happened a few times, but on a lower scale, like me joking calling someone an idiot/dumbass.
But it’s like..I would have stopped and not done it if 1. The atmosphere was different 2. SOMEONE had said something to me
Due_Ad_67933 points1y ago
So, this is mildly petty, but you can go back to your store and gather evidence that you were singled out. (Ie proof others curse on the floor). And argue an unfair labor practice, since you were reprimanded and they were not.
booksandgreentea2 points1y ago
I did bring up the fact that other people were doing it, and she said “Well you should’ve reported it.” Girl I’m not offended so why would I???
booksandgreentea1 points1y ago
I wish I kept the date and times of all my partners doing way worse things than what I did, but because I’m not easily offended by having normal conversations with people, I didn’t.
Possible-Pea84503 points1y ago
That really sucks we had someone steal and have proof of it and they only transferred her to another Starbucks in the district 😏
booksandgreentea3 points1y ago
Bro what?? Either Starbucks needs to change their policies or they need to enforce it nationwide.
almostdied_at7112 points1y ago
I called a coworker weird in a private text and repeated an inappropriate comment made by someone else while I was visiting as a paying customer (not on the clock and not working) and got fired for it from the bux as well.
booksandgreentea2 points1y ago
??? Wtf
almostdied_at7111 points1y ago
Yeah I was so mad, and I cried for a long time. Because since when can you fire someone for something they did on their own time.
friendlySkeletor2 points1y ago
I've been fired from jobs for saying "what the hell" before. Honestly the idea that employees can't curse is stupid af. Its just one of those subtle dehumanizing things. You're required to be perfectly polite when a customer curses you out for actually charging $0.70 for a breve but gods forbid I say hell.
booksandgreentea1 points1y ago
Yeah ur right. It’s a normal human thing, and I obviously don’t do it in front of coworkers.
friendlySkeletor1 points1y ago
Anyway all food service and retail workers should be allowed to cuss.
sakuramads2 points1y ago
This exact situation happened to my friend a year ago, only she got written up and thought it was resolved with coaching and then 3 days later she was fired.

I’ve spoke up, when everyone else is just complaining, and I’ve been called out for it.
marvelmanda1 points1y ago
My manager literally cusses im the headset with customers in the store. And many of the partners do as well. Literally my store is the best imo.
It_is_Katy1 points1y ago
Ugh, that sucks. Every time I see one of these posts I'm grateful all over again for how chill my manager is.
booksandgreentea1 points1y ago
It’s honestly unfair all across the board. If there are rules, enforce them.
It_is_Katy1 points1y ago
I'd say the existence of that kind of rule is the unfair part here, not the inconsistent enforcement of the rule.
booksandgreentea2 points1y ago
No for sure. Obviously it’s not allowed, but to fire someone over it? Holy shit balls.
It_is_Katy1 points1y ago
Oh, of course! there's a special place in Hell for people who treat their employees like that.

booksandgreentea1 points1y ago
I called out because of the snow because I couldn’t leave and it was unsafe…she asked ME to find coverage for my shift when everyone else is in the same situation..called back in a couple hours later because I didn’t wanna let my team down who were able to get to the store, driving while the roads were unplowed with trees all over the road. Brought this up to her yesterday and she said “So you think that gives you a free pass??” No ma’am, just letting you know that ur wrong about me not caring about this job.
cilantroprince1 points1y ago
it’s one of those rules that no one enforces until they do :/ it isn’t fair. i’m sorry this happened, and i hope you can find a better job/store that will appreciate your sense of humor.
booksandgreentea1 points1y ago
Unfortunately I’m a good enough person where after I got fired, I didn’t say anything about the shit the SSV that had complained about me had done on the floor, over the headset, while customers were in the store.
BatWeary1 points1y ago
if that’s the case everyone at my store should be booted out to the curb too. cussing on the floor is a fireable offense and we def take that risk every time we do it, but i don’t understand why you were the only one who got in trouble if everyone else was doing it too??
bunny_rose4221 points1y ago
I just started again this month after 7 years away from the company. At my intake meeting with my new SM (who btw wasn’t even the one who hired me, it was my first time meeting her that day I was hired on by a manager at another location and was bait and switched and told I’d be working at a different store that needed baristas more) the store manager took great offense to me saying “Jesus Christ” and got really upset and told me to say “cheese and rice” instead. Like ???? Ok lady if that’s offensive to your religion bc it’s a sin to say that’s up to you, I’m also gay and have premarital sex but that’s not your place to tell me what to do. SMH I’m already counting down the months till I hit the 6 month mark so I can transfer. That did NOT pass the vibe check.
sirensthigh1 points1y ago
yeah they can kick rocks. the way my use of motherfucker has increased exponentially since working at a sbux…. ur manager can rot
DaWitcherr1 points1y ago
Surprised you didn’t get a final before getting terminated? Seems kinda drastic for just cussing
booksandgreentea1 points1y ago
It was a combination of my jokes apparently not being taken as jokes. Like calling my coworker dumbass/idiot. Here’s the thing though. This was not a just me thing, I was doing what everyone was doing, and would’ve stopped if I was asked to.
animeilove12191 points1y ago
Unfortunately cussing on the floor was made a right now fireable offense awhile ago.But it’s one of those things managers pick and choose when to use so I think they need to redo the rule.
booksandgreentea1 points1y ago
Exactly. I have had over 50 people tell me I wasn’t going to get fired. And look what happens.
Commie_Gamer_Girl1 points1y ago
Thats fucking bullshit
booksandgreentea1 points1y ago
Yeah, Ik :)
lilkiosk1 points1y ago
I have been told it’s “a super fireable offense” but no one has ever once even been written up for it at my store (knocking on wood currently)
imboredwassup1 points1y ago
my coworker literally yelled “f you” at me after i joked about something then started laughing. that’s so dumb that you would get fired for that.
booksandgreentea1 points1y ago
:)))) I know
cowboyqweer1 points1y ago
Its awesome that you are getting a rec to work at another store but why is your manager not getting any disciplinary action for what is clearly a targeted firing? You are out the wages until you get rehired, is the company doing anything to compensate you for that? This shit would never happen if we were unionised... The DMs literally don't do shit for the baristas except just barely cover the company's ass to maintain an okay public image.
booksandgreentea3 points1y ago
She has been complained about so many times and hasn’t gotten fired, but the moment I get complained about, I’m fired.
cowboyqweer1 points1y ago
the way Starbucks protects our shit managers is like really bad business practice, no wonder the turnover rate is so high...
booksandgreentea1 points1y ago
Yep! It’s great
CapableArtist1231 points1y ago
That’s just a horrible excuse to fire you. It feel like the manager is targeting you… I’m pretty sure 95% of partners do the same when they are messing around.
booksandgreentea1 points1y ago
Yeah ik :/
_Ayala__1 points1y ago
Wow and here my coworkers are swearing up and down and im new 😳

Helyra1 points1y ago
This happened in my store a year ago. Now. I tell everyone to watch it with their language because someone got fired for it.
the1noir1 points1y ago
To be fair, at least in my store, my manager is super cool and fair and tbh you probably won’t ever get fired for anything unless you’re stealing, sexual harassment, or extreme attendance issues but my manager ALWAYS reminds us not to curse there’s absolutely nothing she can do to protect us if a customer hears and complains. You just got caught. Sorry dude, don’t curse in a customer service type job.
Mr_SCPF1 points1y ago
Similar thing happened to me. I was talking about non-work appropriate things, like everyone else was at the time. I’m the only one who got in trouble…only a final written warning because apparently I’m a “good partner”
booksandgreentea1 points1y ago
I honestly thought I would get a final written warning too.
jackv281 points1y ago
Good luck hope you do well
istolehannah-27 points1y ago
So just for context how common is it for people to swear at each other on the floor in your store? Why would any of you think that wouldn’t get you fired? I believe you that it’s probably a store culture thing but why didn’t it cross your mind that if you get caught or called out on it, you are ultimately responsible for yourself even if it others do the same thing? Yikes all around…
legoshis22 points1y ago
I think it’s fine they’re venting about it, on this sub no less. I’m sure they handled it professionally in real life. out of all reasons to get fired, I think we can all agree that joining in on playful cussing and being the *only* one to get separated sounds ridiculous. OP admitted they made a mistake and they’re allowed to feel singled out also
booksandgreentea11 points1y ago
I even went so far as to personally call my SSV that this happened with and apologize to them after I was fired. Unfortunately, they did say some things that made me believe they were wanting me to get fired, but I took it gracefully.
When explaining all of my reasonings to my DM, I told him that not only is the environment different during closing shifts, but the people I work with are close in age with me (I just turned 18, most of the closers are high school students including me, except the SSV of course), meaning our humor is pretty much the same at school as it is at work. Obviously this is NOT an excuse, rather an observation to how different a store culture can be in the morning vs night.
I am honestly fortunate enough to have had a chance to speak with my DM over the phone after I had been fired, and also kind enough to offer me a letter of recommendation so I could possibly get a job at another Sbux. He was honestly really nice and calmed my nerves a lot.
In the future if I am able to get an interview with the SM for the other store near me, I’m going to be as transparent as possible. Obviously they’ll find out either way, but my SM was such a hard-ass she wouldn’t LET me explain anything.
Thanks for chipping in, I appreciate it.
LZARDKING4 points1y ago
Honestly it sounds like someone on that floor with you was out to get you for some reason or another. And I said it in a comment above but as young as you are: find somewhere else. I’m 28 I’ve been here since I was 18 and I would go back and never work here tbh. They make you so comfortable with the benefits but do not care about you as an individual at all. Seriously go anywhere else. If I could be 18 and start over I’d steer away from food service altogether. We’re so disposable it’s crazy.
booksandgreentea3 points1y ago
To explain further, this is only a closing shift thing where there are little to no customers in the lobby. It is common enough to where I felt comfortable enough to join in as well. As I stated before, I understand what I did was wrong, but the fact of the matter is 1. It happens all the time, doesn’t make it right, but most any person in an environment like that will join in/laugh along too 2. Much worse things have been said on that floor, including my SSV talking about his experience on drugs. It feels unfair to me to be targeted singularly and not heard out fully.
istolehannah-9 points1y ago
Thanks for the context. I was imagining this with a lobby full of customers in it mid day or something.
That does suck and it is unfair, but at the end of the day just try and learn from it and move on.
booksandgreentea2 points1y ago
Speaking with my DM definitely helped my case. Ofc I was crying haha but he was very warm and welcoming and understanding of what had happened. They can’t obviously go against policy, but he did tell me that it was obvious I cared about my job and team members.
LZARDKING2 points1y ago
The thing about Starbucks is you’re supposed to get two “warnings” of the same kind before you get fired. Getting fired for one instance of breaking standard is very unusual and uncool.
