Barista 2nd week at Starbucks, i need some help (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by slimeoao
Hello all!

I am currently starting my 2nd week at starbucks and honestly register and DT has been pretty straight forward and getting the hang of it!

When it comes to making drinks and such, I am struggling pretty hard and I feel that I am also giving my fellow partners a hard time as well with all the questions. They have been extremely nice about it though, but I can't rely on them all the time. Does anyone have any tips on remembering the syrups to shots part? I seem to always get confused. Im sure I will get it with time but since I work mornings at a drive thru location, I'd want to learn as soon as possible or at least be less of a nuisance to my nice partners.

Thanks all!

edit: i have the cheat sheets on my phone but hard to sneak a peek in front of my managers some times :p

Don't be so hard on yourself. As a shift, I can tell you it takes some time to learn this stuff and I promise you, your coworkers are not nearly as annoyed answering questions as you think they are.

Seconding what's been said below: write yourself a cheat sheet and stick it on the bar. I always make a sticky note for my baristas, but chalk marker works just as good.

Size/shots/syrup
T/1/3
G/2/4
V/2/5
IcedV/3/6

Keep your chin up, you've got this!

Simple but effective! I appreciate it! I'll write this down and keep it in my apron.

Thank you for the reply!

The cheat sheets mentioned are very helpful! For me I just remembered the drinks that were weird (macchiato, vanilla sweet cream cold brew, etc.) And from there figured out why they were weird. AKA, I know the macchiato gets one less syrup pump and since it would be three in a grande, it's four in a regular drink! That always helped me because it was easier to memorize the weird few drinks than it was to remember each drink :)

Yeah the outliers are easier to remember for me too! imo bc they different they sit in my mind more.

It’ll come with time. Soon it will be second nature. I’m in my 3rd week but have spent a lot of time on bar because when they ask what I want to work on, that’s what I say. I still have to think when switching from size to size, but the thought process is much faster than it was last week. Now I’m working more on sequencing in order to make quality drinks faster.

This makes me feel better! I'm sure the next step to my learning curve will be sequencing as well but I'll cross that bridge when I get there! Thanks!

ive been there for 2 weeks too!! but do yoi mean like how many shots and pumps go into the sizes?
slimeoao [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Yes! kinda. I'm hoping there is some way of remembering them easily. But it's looking like I'll just have to pound the information until I remember it

yeah :( someone once told me to use rhe ratio, but i never learned how to remmeber the ratios so unfortunately i cant share that with you--

but the pumps and shots are fairly easy to remember!
like for hot drinks, its
1,2,2 — shots
3,4,5 — pumps

cold drink,
1, 2, 3 — shots
3, 4, 6 — pumps

for me, i just remembered those numbers in order and its helped me alot

No problem! and thanks a ton! I'll try and keep this in mind for tomorrow. I'm sure it will help.

There is a few cheatsheets that can be printed from the partner hub for shot numbers and pump numbers. Ask a shift to help you find them. Those are really nice to reference. When I train I'll write some of those numbers on the espresso machine. The fridges in your store *might have stickers on the top of them with useful quick info for hot or cold bar, look for those too.

Beyond that, as you recognize, it will take time and don't worry about asking questions. Drink quality is more important than speed. Good luck!

I got those cheat sheets on my phone, I guess it just comes down to remembering them! We only have those stickers on our frappe fridge tho sadly :(

Thanks for the reply!

You're welcome. Another tip is if you are able to borrow a POS, you can re-enter the drink you are trying to make and then reference the breakdown on the right side of the screen which generally have numbers with them too. It would be nice if there was a method to beam info into your head so that you can instantly learn it, but sadly Elon Musk hasn't completed it yet, just do your best. Another week or two with some solid bar time and you will have the vast majority down pat.

True!! I didn't even think of the POS breakdown. And ikr only if I can magically insert some info into my head. Thank you so much!
