sick with COVID in the drive thru, forced to serve them?(self.starbucksbaristas)

so here’s an entirely infuriating story from my shift today
much like every other store, we’ve had a large spike in medicine ball orders lately. gotta love sick season on top of omicron. it’s infuriating enough when obviously sick people come through for their medicine ball, but this customer really took the cake today.
i was at window, but the person on DTO had their headset up loud enough that i could hear the customer as well. i heard them ask, in quite the sniffly voice, might i add, if we had any drinks for COVID… 🤦🏻♂️
the person on DTO just said no but we have some herbal teas, and they ordered a medicine ball ofc.
being at window, i was very reasonably uncomfortable with serving them. i’ve already been on isolation due to an exposure once this month, i only have one more paid COVID leave for the quarter. no way was i wasting it because some dumbass has no consideration for any other life forms. so naturally, i asked if i could refuse them service because they were clearly sick, and my SSV told me to suck it up because we can’t refuse pay… said they’d get in trouble for it if the customer decided to report it.
is that true? will i and my SSV get in trouble if i refuse someone service? if so, that seems like a wild violation of workers’ rights, doesn’t it?
anyway, i ended up just holding my breath through the transaction, then drowning my hands and work station in the appropriate disinfectants. i fucking hate people.
edit: adding to this, it was wild to me that no one else seemed to have a problem serving this person… partner on DTO just carried on, none of the bar baristas thought twice about making the drink, like wtf? y’all don’t care that i’m out here catching diseases?

Fuck that's awful. We had someone mad that we were out of literally everything to make the drink, but they could barely get it out between coughs. Ew.

GROSS 🤮 we shouldn’t have to serve people like that!! they have no consideration for us, why should we be forced to show any for them? just because they pay for their stuff? good to know money is more important than our health…

Seriously lol. We have a tally at work for how many people come in obviously sick trying to order the medball. I'm honestly thinking of quitting bc of how little protection we get as workers- no, as HUMANS:/

for real!!! what’s wrong with people??

Why are people so inconsiderate? Stay at home, rest, have some tea at your house. Stop putting low wage customer service employees at risk, we are already at a higher risk working around so many people on a daily basis. I haven't worked in a drive through for a couple of months, but I imagine a lot of people still aren't wearing masks, especially customers like the one you mentioned.
rat-god-5 points1y ago
almost none wear masks, it’s a vast minority, but i’m also in a pretty lax state, pandemic wise. masses of maskless people is nothing new here, unfortunately.

That sucks. I would mention the situation to a manager just asking what is appropriate in a situation like that, you may be allowed to refuse service, or find another solution. Honestly I would have tried to deny service at DTO if possible in that case.

thx sm for the advice, i’ll do that!

F no I’m always holding my breath washing hands and keeping myself away from that type of energy, I hear a thick wet sneeze or cough I’m walking away got me messed up

I’ve had a customer that went through our drive thru and said they had COVID. I told them to place a mobile order and I will set it out on our patio for them, but they cannot come in the store. If they weren’t a member I would’ve told them to use Uber eats and that for the future they will be denied service. Just because you’re an idiot doesn’t mean you get to be sick and come to Starbucks. As instructed by CDC stay home, find other resources for food/beverage delivery, ask friends/family to help do your shopping, idk be a *decent human being*

I don’t think it would be right to refuse them service but you as a human being always have the right to not interact with a customer that makes you uncomfortable, your shift should have stepped in for you or another barista that was comfortable.
