Does it get better? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by PastaWithJamSauce
I’m on my third week.. I don’t know if I’m cut out for this job.. I’m in so much pain after every shift that I can’t do anything besides rest, and the job itself is just so.. irritating… did everyone feel this way when they started? It doesn’t help that my store only had 4 people out of 15 people scheduled all of last week, and I was trying to learn hot and cold bar while we had such a long line and I just felt like I was getting in the way of the other person on bar. :(

Just do your best, take your time, and breathe. If you get overwhelmed, communicate that! Say “hey! Theres a lot of drinks here and I feel like im slowing us down, can I help in a better way or maybe get some assistance?”
Ive learned that at bux communication is a huge thing, hopefully if you have a good team behind you, theyll do what they can to help.
Also on any down time you have, practice your sequencing! Remember we only need to focus on two drinks at a time, dont let yourself get too overwhelmed.
Im new myself but these are all things that help me!

Me and another coworker literally talked about how in the beginning, we individually thought to ourselves, “We’re not going to to make it here.” But 3 months in, we realized we could. I switched stores and felt that way all over again. It just takes time to get the rhythm and muscle memory.
You got this!

When I was hired my SM said being a barista won’t fully click until one day about 3 months in, a switch will flip and you’ll know what to do. I honestly felt the same way, most of the time during my first 2 or 3 weeks, I wasn’t learning and was thrown in the back to do dishes (which a perk is I’m now the fastest dish washer at my store). I would be in pain after each shift (I closed and wouldn’t get out until almost midnight and got home at 1am). I would sleep until noon or 1 pm the following day. I struggled and cried a lot. My shifts threw me on bar to sink or swim and luckily I swam, unfortunately we have a huge number of people who give up, and it’s honestly really sad bc I know at least at my store, if you need help learning something, someone is there to help you. Some advice I have:
1.) breath. I know things get stressful but if you panic and rush yourself and don’t breath, you stress yourself out and give up
2.) ask for help, even if it’s not from your trainer if you are still training
3.) if you are still training, talk to your trainer. Say “hey I’m really struggling, can you help me learn they easier”
4.) as hard as it is, don’t let what other people say affect you. People are rude. And they don’t understand.
5.) if you don’t have drinks, practice.
6.) savor every second of your breaks, rest and hydrate. A joke I tell myself (bc I’m a flaming homosexual) is hydrate or die straight
7.) don’t be afraid to tap out. If stuff becomes too busy and you can’t handle it, ask for help or if needed, ask if you can take a break from barring bc it’s stressing you out too much.

I would say, if you’re able to, and trust me I know it’s hard, try to tough it out a little longer. Once your bodies used to the job, and you’re more comfortable on bar, the job becomes a lot of fun.

oh my goodness this was my exact experience. i cried every day bc i was so overwhelmed and people were mean. i told myself i’d quite after 4 months. but then all of a sudden, like you said, something clicked and the switch flipped.

Thank you for the advice and encouragement I really needed this right now! I’m planning to move across town in a couple months so I think I’ll try to stick it out till then, and then decide if I want to work at a different Starbucks or start the job search again.. thank you again for sharing your experience with me!!:)

I would definitely say, sometimes the store you’re in, isnt the store for you. And it sucks. But finding the right people is always amazing.
And of course. I’m sorry you’re struggling with everything rn. But the the cliché goes it does get better.
