Coffee Master (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by The_tired_barista
So I was recently informed of the process of becoming a coffee master, and my question is, is it worth it? All the reading and studying?

The program was discontinued unless you’re not in America. Not really a point to it unless you actually care about coffee or learning about it

All the reading and studying and not a penny for a raise. Nah it’s not.

That’s what I’m thinking but I’m trying to become a trainer and then a shift, would it help with me getting to that?
BeardiesRule112 3 points 1y ago
Not necessary. None of my shifts or my SM are “coffee masters”

It wouldn’t help you in getting the promotion, but it would definitely help you out if you do. As a trainer you need to be super knowledgeable about all the drinks and coffees to be able to pass your knowledge and enthusiasm for it on to your trainees.

People do it for the apron honestly. Most of the people who are coffee masters don’t even drink coffee 😒

I mean the black apron is nice af. But it’s also kinda enjoyable to learn about coffee in depth

Yeah I’m just saying from what I see. It’s nice to sit down and taste coffee however I feel they don’t do this anymore. My first store my shift would sit me down and to a tasting with a pairing pastry. He would also tell me how I should drink it like let the coffee inside he pastry and enjoy it like that

I would absolutely love to do that but unfortunately at my store we don’t do tastings. It’s so sad.

I feel like no stores does this anymore. My first taste was almost ten years ago. I recently came back my Starbucks as a hobby

This at least used to be true, but the coffee masters have/had a whole bean quota of sales to meet every period

So I originally did it because a customer called me out on my time with the company and lack of knowledge of the coffee ( I know silly right) but it’s really cool stuff to learn. And my DM at the time was kinda scary & distant. But during that whole process he was like a different person. For me it wasn’t just about coffee it was also about getting to know the ppl I work with.
