Lead Advice (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Cool_Ice8588
Hi guys, I have been a closing shift lead for a few months now and I’m having a few issues with confrontation I guess. I find myself being hesitant to tell a barista if they are doing something wrong/not up to par in fear that they will take it the wrong way. For example, the past few nights I have asked a barista to sweep the lobby, I’ll go out and check it and there will still be straw wrappers and random junk in the floor, but I’m not sure how to correct it without offending my baristas. Any tips that’ll help with this?

If a partner isn’t doing something I ask them to do I will go grab the tools/materials they’ll need to do it and literally hand it to them and stand there. Most of the time after handing them the tools they go and do it. With the scenario you explained I would grab the broom and dust pan and hand it to them. Sometimes you just have to remember it’s a job and also “make” them remember.

I’m not saying to turn into a tyrant, but you don’t want to let yourself get walked on when the way the store operates and looks is on you when you’re manager isn’t there.

usually if i notice a job is not fully done or something was missed i will just tell them to do it again. so like if there were straw wrappers in the lobby, instead of asking them to do a lobby sweep i will say something like “hey can you get those straw wrappers off the floor for me? thank you.” so it’s not telling them that they’ve done anything wrong or correcting them, it’s just asking them to do a more specific task. usually they just say “okay!” and do it with no complaints or anything at all, and i don’t have to worry about “correcting them.”

Yeah so I don’t like to micromanage and eye them down. Baristas r not gonna like it and that’s just more work for u. I would just give them direction or reminder.

But if u want to confront them…. I definitely understand where you r coming and it can b uncomfortable at first. Just remember u have more power over the situation and think about how u would like to be treated. U pull them aside not when they’re not in group. And say “hey how r u doing? R u okay. I noticed that when I asked u to sweep, theres still trash on the floor” and they probably will say “oh yeah I’m just out of it” or “okay I’ll watch out for it”. First time around I would leave it at that cus most likely they’re gonna get the message. And u don’t want them to feel like ur judging them. Cus maybe they’re a great worker and u just discouraged them. Most likely that’s gonna work. But second time around I would give them a statement of preference. And two times is enough the third time is just tell ur manager.

Per the training, coach them and let them know the importance of a clean lobby lol. Sometimes that doesn’t work either, so you have to find a happy medium. If they’re just being lazy and not responding to your coaching be sure to let your SM know.

Im usually the barista in this situation because my broom sucks ass. But if you know the broom is actually decent then Merced_x has it right
