How often do you hear please and thank you? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by longtermcontract
Hello! Average customer here. I ordered at the drive through the other day, and when I got to the window the barista thanked me for saying please and thank you to her, and said I was the only person who used those words all day. Is that common for your line of work? Do most people not use basic manners, or was that an outlier?

we hear it sometimes but maybe only like 60-70% of the time, at least in the 3-4 months i’ve been here. it depends on the day. there are definitely enough customers who don’t use manners that it can start to wear on a person.

I worked an eight hour shift where I heard thank you once.
NewRecommendation553 28 points 1y ago
Thank you- 80% of the time, after I hand out a drink or food item. 15% of the time after I tell someone their total.

Please- 5% of the time , if that.

Me: Hi! How are you? 😊
Customer: …….. Get me ___
Me: okay have a great day!
Customer: *walks away in silence*

Once I asked a lady how she was doing and she glared at me and I said “That’s good to hear!!!” then “I hope you have a great day!!!!”😂😂

It really depends on where your store is. Everyone has a different customer base, where I am a lot of people say please and thank you.

Your so right
DieLawnUwU 13 points 1y ago
Almost never. My store is in a tourist town.
lilkiosk 11 points 1y ago
I mean. We maybe get a thank you. But doesn’t change how rude most of our customers are. Almost all said “I need…” instead of please or “get me…”
welcome2mybog 10 points 1y ago
you just know when they start with the “i need” there are at least 4 heavily modified drinks in the order and probably layered frappucinos with “extracarameldrizzle and extracrunchytoppings”…. and always the vanilla sweet cream cold foam 😳
Perfect-Leadership58 10 points 1y ago
or the worse one - “you’re gonna make me” 🙃🙃

I told off a customer for that. She said it into the speaker and I interrupted my dto person taking the order when I heard that. It happened that it was one of our regulars who has previously bad mouthed minimum wage workers to my face, but I didn’t know that at the time. I eventually ended up telling her that we aren’t her servants and she had better change her attitude or she wouldn’t be welcome here anymore.

I haven’t seen her since. I’m not mad about that.

you’re kinda like my hero now omg thank you
accountedthrowaway5 10 points 1y ago
to be honest, not often enough. but i don’t let it phase me cause i know that people just want to be in and out of the place quickly
MiaLedger 5 points 1y ago
I hear it pretty frequently, maybe because I tend to be very bright and friendly all the time and say it to them.
semperviride 4 points 1y ago
Almost always in my area, plus a lot of 'yes ma'am / yes sir' and 'have a blessed day!'
Blue-Jay27 4 points 1y ago
I hear 'thank you' a lot. I regularly have ppl say it 3+ times in the interaction which I find odd. Not sure anyone's ever said please to me though. Odd. I wonder if it's regional or smth?

Never

i’ve been working for starbucks going on 4 years. i have never once heard please and thank you. literally ever.
Toomanyboringpeople 2 points 1y ago
Not as often as I hear “give/get me a …. “ 😂🙄
XMyshelX 2 points 1y ago
We’re a highly seasonal town, when the snow birds are here we hear it much less….honestly most days I feel like a robot or a magic floating hand with drinks. I’d estimate about 1 in 6 people dont even acknowledge me, or even look at me. (you would really think it would be the younger people without manners but it’s the over 45 crowd)
Necessary_Low939 2 points 1y ago
No they don’t say it often.
paigemclachlan 2 points 1y ago
Probably 50% of the time for I’d say. When they do say it I don’t think it’s too genuine but it doesn’t really matter to me so 🤷🏻‍♀️
goddessofwaterpolo 2 points 1y ago
I would say about half of my store’s customers say it and they are regulars or otherwise nice teenagers.
TheeeStarGirl 1 points 1y ago
im very fortunate to have really polite customers. in the same sense, i work in a super rich area with a lot of snooty people—so when they’re mean they are MEAN (and super entitled). but the regulars i have are pretty cool and i appreciate them for not being assholes all the time 😅
bbrrees 1 points 1y ago
Y’all don’t come at me bc last time I posted on this subreddit someone said why was I on this page if I wasn’t a barista but look I’m new to Reddit so idk what I’m doing 🤣
But I am a customer and I always try to be as nice as possible. I always say “hi can I please get....” and I always say thank you after the total and after they give me my drink. So it’s sad to see that it’s something that doesn’t happen often.
Alefur 1 points 1y ago
I hear "Thank you" most often, never really hear please, and the thank yous are only after I thank them for coming so I have no clue if that's valid or not
sobegaycola 1 points 1y ago
I've heard please w total of 4 times in 4 months, and thank you wayyyy more
thechamelioncircuit 1 points 1y ago
Only when I say it
Miserable_Leek_8697 1 points 1y ago
Wait our customers know those words?
yourgoddesskitty 0 points 1y ago
Yeah I don’t often hear thank you at my store, and most of their requests are more like demands these days. But there’s a few people that stand out and are super sweet and it kinda makes up for it Lol
