Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

Full History - 2022 - 01 - 23 - ID#sbbu8e

I'm a 284 SSV. I had to work 21 8-10 hour days straight to keep my store open. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by fernoopal
I'm so burnt out. I feel so horrible at this job or like I'm lettting down all the new baristas who have been hired and all I'm doing is just barely holding together now. My store manager is pretty much as hands off as can be, has super strict demands and barely shows up. She's scheduled five brand new partners out of six total slots from 1-8:30 and that alone is killing me. Just needed to vent and feel like I'm not going insane and that, yes, management is letting me down.

285\*\*\*\* supervisor here. This is so fucking stupid. I've done 10-day stints. I tried to do a 7-day open-close schedule once because of isolations at my store (we cut hours, obviously!) but I burnt out and gave my 7th shift to someone else. You shouldn't have to work 3 straight weeks with no days off because your store manager is a dumbass and your district isn't helping you out.

Reach out to your district manager, let them know you've worked 21 days in a row. Tell them you need time off and your store manager isn't supporting you. Honestly, reach out to other store managers in your district and tell them exactly what's going on and that you need to borrow a supervisor so you can have a day off this week. Preferably more than one day off. Call the Partner Contact Center if none of those people help you and see if there's any way they can put pressure on your leadership to help you.

Please remember this is not your fault. You aren't letting anyone down, *you are being let down*. Your cup is empty and there is no coffee to pour into anything or anyone else. I'm sure the new baristas know and can see that, and have compassion for your situation.

And if none of that works or helps, call in sick and watch from afar as the store crumbles without you. Revel briefly in the amount of power you have. And if the SM tries to retaliate in any way, run through the DM and PCC again with the information that you got in trouble for being sick and enjoy the fire they build under her ass.

Yes this!!!! call in sick, they literally cannot do anything except ask for a note. Retaliation will get them in trouble . And even if it’s not physically sick, I know you are mentally sick of this shit and that’s reason enough to take a sick day in my opinion.

They can't even do that. Starbucks doesn't ask for doctor's notes anymore, I suspect because it discriminates against people who are too poor for doctors.

U shouldn’t have to do that. At some pt u need to close the store if understaffed.

Edit: especially when u ain’t getting paid overtime!

Management and corporate are letting all of us down. While it doesn’t help you, my store is in a similar vote. So at least you aren’t alone 😅

209 here. You need to get into contact with your district manager and explain how your sm is not doing their job. They are supposed to work at the store, so if you explain how hands off your sm is in the appropriate way, even a lousy dm will do something. Second, absolutely do not be afraid to transfer. It’s more of a you and the sm at the other store decision than your current SM’s decision. I’ve had four home stores and I can assure you that sometimes you’re only good choice to make while keeping the job is transferring. If your sm is making you work that much and you’ve made attempts to communicate that you are unhappy the sm deserves to be reprimanded and you deserve to have a store that will support you for all of your efforts. Your sm is connected with the district there is no reason that they can’t make an effort to get ssv coverage for you to have two days off a week just like most other people. If you need any help talking to your dm please feel free to pm me and I’ll do my best to support you.

Set work boundaries. I burned myself out so bad during covid and now I am over it. But at least I am keeping boundaries. You can learn to say no. Create a good statement for your DM or corporate. They will and can help, even if it takes calling it in a few times. Your manager needs to learn to just close the store down.

Everyone has given advice on the days in a row, but about the all green beans.

Tell them they are great and to do their best and it’s just coffee and only come get you if the building is on fire and then go take your 10/lunch. Take the headset off and just chill for a minute. You can only do some much with a 100% brand new team.

No. Get your upper management involved - DM, RM, anyone - or even local labor board.

You’re not letting anyone down, but you are letting someone take advantage of you, which the new green beans will see and try to emulate. Stop the abusive cycle with you and create healthy boundaries, which you deserve. Starbucks is not worth this.

289 supervisor here - please do not overwork yourself to this point!!! There was a time where over half our management team was isolating, and the other SSVs had the weekend off so I was the only one opening and closing all weekend. And I drew the line - the store will only be open the length of my 8 hour shift, nothing more. I’ve had to draw this line several times whenever we’ve had people in isolation or out for various reasons. I know it may feel like we’re letting people down, but it is not our responsibility to kill ourselves just to keep the store open. Be strict with your availability, 8 hour shifts max, and needing 2 days off a week. The rest is not your concern.

Wait ? That is crazy I literally worked 9 days straight 6 hrs cause I opened and closed we literally had no partners it was a lot of work .. I feel this ..

You have to catch a break. You’re not a robot. You’re a royal human being.
champshere 2 points 1y ago
I’m very sorry to hear that and a lot of you need advocate for yourself(s). There’s nothing wrong with it and you won’t face any consequences. That will burn anyone out mentally/physically and it’s definitely not fair.

That's insane. I would've never done that, not for any amount of extra money lol.

I did open to close 16 days straight December of 2020 when I first found out I was pregnant. fucking sucked (this was when I took a brief break from corporate and worked for Starbucks in giant) the partner there has covid so they sent me 2 hours away to run the store but at least they paid for my meals and travel and I got $300 tips daily.
kxnkycxrly 1 points 1y ago
first, holy fucking shit. Second; I have never met another 284 so HI OMG.
third, baby you need a vacation. management is truly letting you down. have you called partner resources and have they been successful in helping you? Can you ask to be escalated to higher up than your DM???

Felt this. 278 SSV and working 7-8 hour shifts every day from last Thursday until this Saturday. Had a barista who had their first day off in two weeks today, and the SM forced another partner to come in while they had covid under threat of a write-up.

This job sucks harder and harder every day, but I'n proud of you for trudging along OP.
