Had a particularly frustrating week of openers complaining about our closes so here’s this meme(i.redd.it)

Thank you! We have a one hour window to do all of our cleaning tasks. Closer comes in only two hours before mid shift leaves and one of those hours is for everyone’s breaks. Expecting us to do breakdown, mats, bathrooms, cbs, AND all the closing dishes and floors when we have 2 part all night makes me incensed. Meanwhile the morning crew has 4 part coverage and can’t even finish the floors! I hate my store.

Bruh, you or your ssv needs to be real about the expectations for your closes with your SM and opening ssvs.
I dont know how things work at your store but I as a forever closing shift had to open recently and i can attest, openers do fuck all tasking wise at mine. So if your store is opening at normal times (4-6am or whaever) they should be slow enough to get their stuff done and some early cleaning and closing stuff. They should be setting you all up as much as you set them up. That's team work. But if they're opening later (7-9am or whatever) then they'll be swamped with customers and can't focus on anything but production and helping customers well into the mid day/afternoon depending on average business levels I'd say. So if your am team isn't able to set you all up to help facilitate your close, you need to inform your SM that you either need more people or more time or both. Because unless your closing SSVs have poor time management skills or the closing teams aren't strong, then you're just not being set up for success and need to make that clear. Otherwise you'll be unable to help support your am crew.
Also preclose like a motherfucker, i cannot stress that enough. 90% of my close is done before I lock doors most of the time.
Sorry for the rant, I just hate the whole closers can't do shit mentality when literally they do 110% of the maintenance of the store.

Morning crew does bathrooms and mid shift do mats at our store. That’s too much for night crew!

Wow, do you work in my store?? Because I felt this.

Lmao imagine having an hour… at my store we get 30 minutes😎

Are you a license store or a cafe only? If your a drive thru and only running a 4 partner peak every day then the morning crew is already probably at max capacity.
At my store a 4 partner peak would mean you restock essentials only as you run out. Everything else wouldn’t even get touched. You would try to contact the manager to turn of mobiles and cross your fingers.
LZARDKING1 points1y ago
No we’re a cafe store. Our peak is like two 45 half hours lol

The biggest thing that people who only open never understand is that no matter what condition the store in they just get to leave when their shift ends, but night crew has to stay longer to try to clean everything all the time and it gets exhausting.

This!! Same with mid-shift too. If they are too busy to get breakdown done, or start anything, they just get to pack up and leave. That leaves the closers stuck with 2 others shifts worth of work, while being just as busy. And when the time comes around to close, we can't just pack up, because we'll get shit on by everyone for missing something.

I used to stay 15-20 mins after close to get everything done perfectly for the Openers. Once I noticed that the Openers do not reciprocate any efforts to set me up for a good close, I’ve had my closers stop doing anything that isn’t absolutely essential and we leave at the end of our scheduled shift.

What can openers at your store do to make for a smoother close? I am often a solo opener at my little kiosk store, I want to reciprocate that love the closers show sometimes. I try to restock everything and keep things clean, anything else I should be doing?

In my experience which is limited I'll admit. Brew cold brew or iced coffee if you can. Make sure the fridges and anything else is stocked before leaving. At my store it's usually pretty chill at the 1 pm shift change but by 2:00 or so we have a huge rush from a lot of people leaving work from thier first shift jobs so this can make a huge difference for us. I've come into my shift numerous times with fridges damn near empty and I'll have a steady stream of people which prevents us from restocking then we're hit hard at the rush. Any random little things you can clean for the day go ahead and do it like trash changes or trash runs. Saturdays are particularly bad for second shift people because of the restocking. It would be nice but isn't necessary if people could also set us up with a clean sani bucket and sanitizer for the wands. It's just nice little gestures that can help that can make a huge difference. Also mainly not complaining about little shit in the mornings. Like I referenced in my comment above someone wrote in the book about one singular crumb in the pastry case, instead of writing it in the book just wipe it out and don't write it in the book. We get in loads of trouble for menial bullshit so overlook small mistakes. Not huge mistakes of course but let the small ones go.

The openers are similar at my store. I used to do nice things to help them out with opening in the mornings. Now I don't. Maybe stop writing shitty comments in the book and the closers would do better. I've read such petty things in the book that I do the bare minimum and encourage everyone else to do the same. They literally tell us constantly about how slow they are every morning from 5am to 7am. Must be nice we're busy until close and then have 45 minutes to clean and restock every single thing then someone has the audacity to comment on a crumb in the damn pastry case. A literal crumb. Nahhhhh openers need to get it together.

Openers are so whiny. I have been an opener and a closer. Closing is much harder.

ive got a lot of love for closers. they have to deal with the afternoon rush, such a tight time restraint to clean the store for the morning, and a collection of other stress-inducing things. yall are good at what you do, especially at a time like this <3

This made me particularly chuckle since I had a terrible closing shift tonight. 4 call outs, And a couple more are in isolation so it was a bare bones crew. We even closed early because it was bad. On top of after school rush (our store is down the road from an elementary, middle, and high school so it can be nuts), a random late order came in and we had hardly anyone to put it away (as much as we tried to along with everything else). The cherry on top was when someone decided to smear shit on the base of the toilet and some on the rim. I took one look and was like "absolutely the fuck not! I don't get paid nearly enough to clean up biohazard". We have a great night crew and we really do our best to leave the store looking good for the openers. But now I'm home, drunk and ready to go to bed.

I was an opener. This was me 🤣. we have such a huge volume in the mornings - i’d rather clean. Opening shifts made sure we set up closers by doing checklist tasks.
