Rant: Lack of Recipe Transparency...? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Lampinglamp
I'll say it: i love my job. i love starbucks, i love making drinks but for the past few days i've been stuck at home due to covid. despite having covid, i've felt an intense need to still be a barista at home. so, based on the skills i've picked up from work, i've single handedly been able to make a lot of the drinks from work at home and have it taste the same (if not better due to more intense flavours).

my drink of choice is simply a vt matcha latte, 6 scoops matcha, oatmilk, light ice (if any of my irl barista friends see this and now know my account, no you don't). so, i've been making it at home the same way with my own matcha. today, i decided to make my drink as per usual but with cold foam added. now, i used the same ingredients at home that we do at starbucks to make sweet cream, then put it in a blender and blended it up to make cold foam. it was absolutely delicious.

i'm not sure what came over me but i just decided to search up, "starbucks cold foam" and it's listed on the starbucks website but with such wrong ingredients. link: $1

i've also noticed how different things taste in general from getting it at sbux and their products. like for example, (cringe at me all you want) i love pumpkin spice lattes. when it's season, i can't help myself. it tastes good, all around, great. i decided this year to try their psl via instant and it does not taste in any way similar. i tried it with water, i tried it with different types of milks... it just feels... off.

i kind of understand the reasoning as to why.... i mean you make the cold foam at home as per their website but you just can't help but feel something is just slightly off so you always just end up going back to starbucks to get the cold foam from there bc it just tastes better. i mean, even the picture on their website doesn't look like ours. like the cf on the website is airy. ours is more filled and heavy looking. but just like... why starbucks?... why?

edit: also notice how they don't have the recipe for sweet cream on their website. like why is starbucks so scared? they'll lose customers? i can tell you rn even before working for the siren, i would still regularly go there even if i knew the recipes.

It’s because you don’t post your recipes on the internet for your competition to have access to. Plus, they likely don’t want customers coming to the store to buy up our vanilla syrup. Other than that, you’re right. They won’t make it as good in the at home options to force your hand in coming in to the bux. And a third wildcard option, it might be an old recipe they’ve never updated as they changed the recipe for the vsc. So it might taste closer to the original vsc.

after reading this comment, you’re absolutely right. i completely forgot and didn’t factor in these ideas as well.

idk i was looking at it from more of a perspective of “why lie to your customers when you’ll definitely have those loyal ones who still come in regardless of if they can make it at home or not” i mean, you can easily make coffee at home. why do we still get so many customers who come in for just a basic hot/iced coffee? we do sell the roasts… so what’s stopping them?

but again, you’re absolutely right in your points and i 100% agree now that you’ve brought those ideas up.
