Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

I feel like I could write a guidebook to what is and isnt appropriate drive thru behavior. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by CLEf11
Some of these are Starbucks specific but I feel like a lot of them can apply to drive thrus everywhere

DOs

Have your money ready at the window, there is a long line so you have plenty of time

Ask about us, make polite conversation, we like customer connection too providing it isnt super busy

Tip generously

Say please and thank you

Ask what drinks we recommend, I like introducing people to some of my favorites

Make sure you specify what size you want and if it is hot or iced

Donts

Don't add food or drinks at the window

Dont "pay for the person behind you" It just throws off the flow of the drive thru which can cause mistakes to happen, plus that person behind you can pay for their own drink they're coming here aren't they? Dont just be a nice rich person doing things for nice rich people, take that money and put it in our tip jar

Dont be on your phone, thats annoying, figure out what everyone wants from BEFORE you get in the drive thru

Dont bitch about prices or how long the line was or how long your stuff is taking, we have very little if any control over that

Anyone care to add?

Don't smoke in the drive-thru! I will close the window on you.

Please turn off your windshield wipers before you pull up during a rainstorm. They fling water right at us.
CLEf11 [OP] 15 points 1y ago
Oh yes I forgot to put that one but I was literally thinking about it the other day when someone was smoking in the drive thru. I meant to put it on the list
taylortherod 10 points 1y ago
When I worked at a corporate bux, my coworker with asthmas was working the window and someone was smoking, and she politely asked the person at the window if she could please put out her cigarette and the lady smugly said no
interyx 4 points 1y ago
Ugh that sucks. This is why we need to be able to fire customers.
geminibxtch666 1 points 1y ago
YES
ProfessionalRock7940 78 points 1y ago
Don't order from the passenger seat for the love of god
matchawaffles 15 points 1y ago
Normally, yes, but whenever I hear this I lowkey cringe to myself cause it makes me remember when I complained to my coworker about how the passenger ordered and not the driver, she said to me "Oh! I think that's the mute customer"

I felt SO BAD

But normally, yes, don't order from the passenger seat
Ellectre 55 points 1y ago
don’t sit there recharging your sbux app at the window, do it beforehand PLEASE ..

and if you’re paying in cash + hand me extra for the tip jar let me know so I’m not standing there with an extra dollar trying to figure out if you miscounted or are actually tipping (i do not want to assume because let’s be real who tips us anyways 😭)
Skydery 47 points 1y ago
When they yell “hello?!” as soon as they pull up to the ordering mic🥰🥰🥰
CLEf11 [OP] 29 points 1y ago
And don't start your order if we say "I'll be with you in just a minute"

I should have put that in
caitlin_marie_gg 12 points 1y ago
One time at my store the person on DTO was like “I’ll be right with you” and this lady started ordering and said “did you get that?” and I, DT bar, said “We will be with you in a moment” and she was like “oh…”
ilholtstilin 10 points 1y ago
I really enjoying letting them order in this situation (after we’ve told them we will be with them in a moment) and then just responding with “Okay! So sorry about that wait! What can we getcha!?”
ProfessorSalt413 5 points 1y ago
Love when I’m on DTO and warming with a million food orders and the customers keep talking even after I say this :)
rosebudftw 2 points 1y ago
omg the other day this lady came through and no one had greeted her bc we were extremely short staffed and she started in on her order so i got down w window transaction and was like “did someone greet her” no she just started talking.
caitlin_marie_gg 24 points 1y ago
Don’t show us your phone and have it still plugged in I don’t care if it is at 1% it takes 1 second for you to unplug it so we can scan it without jumping out the window
arcanalalune 5 points 1y ago
Yeah I've always been kinda like ??? Why? And then I can never reach and they huff and have to unplug it anyway.
PeachGreenTea__ 20 points 1y ago
Don’t change your order at the window.

Don’t lie and say we made your drink wrong. You didn’t order a Frappuccino and you know it.
snitchesendupinditch 10 points 1y ago
I've realized in this job that so many people will confidently lie to your face instead of just admitting they made a mistake. It's infuriating. I once had a girl order a strawberry acai refresher, I even asked her if she wanted water or lemonade and she answered lemonade (this also happened while I was working alone in a grocerybux while it was super slow so she was my only customer) it took me less than 2 minutes to take her order and make the drink and then she tells she ordered a "pink drink with coconut milk" as if we didn't both know that a minute and a half earlier she definitely said she wanted it with lemonade.

“CAN I HAVE A CARAMEL MACCHIATO? THATS IT.”
Proceeds to drive off without specifying size, or hot or iced.
Proceeds to be upset they got a hot grande when they “specifically” asked for a venti iced.
I start to cry.
TheCatBall 16 points 1y ago
Our store is next door to a fire station, so please stop talking to us when the sirens are on. We cannot hear you talking when the fire truck sirens are amplified over our head sets. Don’t worry, we won’t leave you: we will still be here.
AndrewtheRey 16 points 1y ago
I feel like you touched on this, but I’d like to say, DON’T add on a water at the window. I used to have so many people, some during peak, that would get their drinks and food and before driving off say, “oh, and a venti water please!” My SM deadass told a girl no once due to window times being important and she threw a fit and called corporate.
celestineleh 13 points 1y ago
dont rev your engine, PLEASE. its just plain rude. some douchebag kept revving his engine at the DT screen. it was 19:30 and there was no line in front of him...

dont ask us to write things on peoples cups. some girl started a pay it forward line and she asked me to write 'jesus loves you' on the next persons cup lid?? i just smiled and nodded. the only thing i'll write on cup lids is the type of coffee or tea, or the type of milk if its an order that has multiples of the same drink with different milks,

dont smoke. you can wait 2 minutes. we will shut the window on you.

dont vape either. during the high school rush, every other car looks like its got a fog machine.

if youre going to let your kid place an order, make sure they understand what theyre ordering. theres been way too many times that a kid ordered a caffeinated drink just because the name sounded good. and dont get mad at us for your childs choices. a girl ordered a $13 tiktok pink drink sweet cream monstrosity. her mom was furious at us because apparently we shouldnt have let her daughter order that. maam, im a barista not a baby sitter. you decided to play candy crush instead of paying attention to your daughters order...
bekalh 2 points 1y ago
had customers in drive ask me if I wanted to hit their pen. like what
sweetiesprinklemusic -4 points 1y ago
I agree with all of this except the vape, as long as they aren't puffing huge clouds toward dtr then I don't see the problem 🤷
OptimalRelationship2 13 points 1y ago
We need to add car break pads to our menu, cause my ear fn hurts when they squeak like that
snitchesendupinditch 7 points 1y ago
Don't awkwardly hand us change wrapped up in a dollar bill. Just give us the change separately. I've dropped people's change on the ground so many times because they handed it to me in the most awkward way possible.

Also if you pull out your phone to pay, just tell us if you're using the app or tap-to-pay. I've had so many impatient customers get pissy with me because the pad wasn't ready for debit/credit even though they never bothered to tell me they were using apple pay.

If we tell you "have a good day" just say it back or say thanks, it's just common courtesy. Yesterday I told a woman "Hope you have a great rest of your day!", as I said it she started to roll her window up and then put her hand out and said "straw" and then sped off as soon as I handed one to her.
BlindHIllCorpse 7 points 1y ago
Hand me your coins before your cash if you want a dollar back and not coins. The line is long and I’m trying to be as fast as possible because there are literally twelve cars behind you who all order 3 fraps each and I’m gonna put 20.00 dollars in on your 19.50 cent order not 20.50. Also don’t throw your drink at me please
ilholtstilin 5 points 1y ago
Be aware of how loud your engine is and consider turning off your vehicle at the speaker. A lot of my customers drive big work trucks (I’m talking actual blue collar workers, not dentists with F-150s) and I’ve learned that they often genuinely don’t realize how loud they are because they’re driving these things around all day.
PinkAshe_13 4 points 1y ago
DONT grab the card reader out of the barista’s hand in the drive thru when you insert your card. Like, it says we do contactless payment, and you just put your nasty hands all over a device that hundreds of people use…
kIose 4 points 1y ago
Be polite, say please and thank you.

If you have a mobile order don't just zoom past the speakerbox, let us know.

Don't pull up to our window and start dumping your old drinks out your car window it's disgusting.
Random-Brunette 4 points 1y ago
Don't order from the back seat, at least not without a head's up from the driver - a couple times now an SUV has come through, the driver orders then the vehicle inches up. We think we have a breather waiting for the line to move up and often take that second to refill straws sleeves or napkins, only to hear a huffy "hello?" from the back seat because we didn't see them right away.
