Shifts who turn everything into a teach experience(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by [deleted]
Am I the only one who can’t stand shifts who think everything is something you need to be “taught” or told how to do. I was on bar I made this customers drink and her 2nd drink was a brewed coffee that the shift who just took her order was making. I made her refresher called out her name she looked and didn’t stand to come get. The shift who took her order and poured the coffee calls her name again and she come to get her drink. He then says to me “next time make sure to call out their names” SIR I DID CALL HER NAME DID YOU STOP TO THINK MAYBE SHE WAS WAITING FOR YOU TO FINISH POURING HER COFFEE BEFORE GETTING UP FROM HER SEAT. NOW LEAVE ME ALONE 🥲

Just tell them you did? If they doubled down on it then yeah it’s annoying but that’s what they’re trained to do.
I think it’s more annoying when they teach you something wrong then get defensive and pushback when they’re corrected or proven wrong really.
YerHighness9647 points1y ago
I did tell them. Thanks tho lol. I’m literally bitching cause it’s annoying when you have been there long enough to know how to do your job and you’re treated like you don’t.

your performance reflects on your shift. i can’t speak for your shift bc i don’t know the situation but if you’re doing something wrong half the time it’s the shifts fault for not correcting you, not yours. my baristas get annoyed with me but i’m just trying to do what i get paid to do. i understand your side of it as well tho.

\^this. It's not that we think you don't know, it's we get fussed at if you make a mistake

also we are pushed to coach. it doesn't matter if i think you're competent or not, my store manager wants to see me coaching.

The micromanagement at Starbucks is ridiculous, and we’re trained that it’s normal. I only realized how bad it actually was when I left.
angryspacejunkie14 points1y ago
its part of the reason i left my previous store, there was a shift there who was very hostile towards me and would hover and micromanage everything even though i had been working at the store longer than most of the other staff, it was infuriating
its not even stuff that i was legit doing wrong, if thats the case then yes of course let me know, but it would be them telling me obvious stuff that i knew or was in the process of doing while being incredibly harsh

I get this a lot. I'm a 15 year partner and new shifts still describe to me in detail how to do customer support.

I’ve been in the position as an SS where I tried not to do stuff like this and then got coached by my manager that I needed to 🤣 There’s no winning.

Coming from a shift, they just need you to be on the same page as them so you can both set the example for other newer barista, Starbucks encourages us to coach in the moment sometimes were just only paying half attention to the situation

Yes true this sounds like a simple mistake!! Ik it can be frustrating but when I was a barista I would usually just say something and as a shift I would totally apologize if someone told me they did call out the drinks.

Sometimes, shifts say stuff you know so the customer hears. Apparently it helps with connection? Idk

i once had a shift who, after peak kicked our ass ^((one spilled drink and all that flow is gone)), asked me if anyone had taught me about sequencing yet.
in fact i *had* heard of the concept of sequencing drinks within my 6 months at sbux.
fjclr1 points1y ago
Like in 6 months a partner has definitely heard of sequencing why would you even coach like that lol
fjclr1 points1y ago
As a shift this is such a tacky way to start a coaching conversation... so condescending yikes
Partymixvix4 points1y ago
I understand the frustration but my store has the opposite problem. We have more than half a completely new staff from 6 months ago and being a trainer I can’t be everywhere all the time. It’s hard to see improvement when the shifts are extremely hands off and never take a moment to coach a partner. I have to constantly ask them to work with younger partners and actually explain positions to them. Everything I teach them won’t be 100% remembered. I would rather have a shift who takes every moment to ensure everyone is on the same page instead of 15 young partners who feel unsupported.

Nah I know what you mean. It’s like they don’t trust you, it’s like a mom when your doing the dishes and they look at you and tell u to do the dishes 😂😂😅
xCherryBombshell1 points1y ago
Yeah some people like to state the obvious and I'm just like "k." And move on.

Imagine a partner who has been there a while telling you not to hold foam back on your drinks…and when you explain that it’s gonna get whip they double down and say it should get both 😂
Flowerfuls15 points1y ago
You’re not supposed to no. You just leave room when you pour. Only hold foam back when they request.
JavaWasp-9 points1y ago
My SM said hold back the foam. So did my trainer.
Flowerfuls7 points1y ago
If you are aerating a latte properly it won’t give you a ton of foam to begin with. A very small amount which is why you don’t need to hold it back. Because if you’re getting a ton of foam then you aren’t even aerating properly.
JavaWasp1 points1y ago
Hey I tried aeration a lil differently today and Holy cow did it make a difference!!! Such a waste of time delicately holding foam back. It was so much easier to just pour!! Thank you so much
