Shift taking her job way too seriously (self.starbucksbaristas)

This is.. how we're supposed to do our jobs as supervisors.

The towel thing is health code violations. Towels have to stay full submerged in sanitizer when not in use. Sanitized dishes have to be allowed to air dry.

The deployment thing is because we deploy stations that way for a reason. it is our job as supervisors to make sure the play is deployed properly and stations are covered. if you just wander around doing whatever, it 1) fucks our job up and 2) tends to make us have to fix YOUR job instead of doing what we can to support the person who actually needs the support.

She should be giving you those tasks 15-30 minutes before you leave, not right at the end, so push back on that. But about the timing, not that she's asking you to do stuff.

Closing, also unreasonable to make you stay that long. But if your store is gross, man, your store is gross and needs cleaning.

Suck it up about the connection thing. That's what we're trained to do as supervisors, and that's a completely reasonable question if your score is low. Using people's names, asking questions about their day (or for regulars, their lives), writing notes on cups/bags, making an effort to remember people day to day, conversing with customers in the cafe while making drinks, these are all ways to improve a connection score. The fact that you didn't already know these things means that your leadership team has failed on this front up to now.

Have a little grace and understand that your shift is doing her job, and give everyone some time to get adjusted to each other.

Towels and all that she’s absolutely right. The asking tasks that close to clocking out is wrong for sure & if she had better time management y’all wouldn’t be getting out so late so that’s also an issue
converselvr 1 points 1y ago
For the towels yes! The shifts before her didn’t enforce it as seriously so I think we are all struggling to get used to it. And we do try to clean as much as we can during the normal hours but we get so busy and before we know it, it’s closing time and we haven’t got anything cleaned.

How new is this shift? Because it sounds to me like she/yall are getting adjusted to each other.

About the towels, she is ABSOLUTELY correct, that shit is a health code violation and needs to have a hard stop on it.

The stuff about closing and leaving an hour and a half after close, it seems excessive but if stuff isn't getting done earlier (because of poor time management or what not) that stuff has to get done after close, you can't just leave the store with out doing a: trash run, dishes, restock, backups, etc.

And about the customer connection, you say that your regulars love you and that you love to see them, bit you gotta realize just because you have 5 regulars that see you on a shift and leave glowing comments on the survey, means Jack-Shit if you aren't giving the other hundred people the same treatment. I understand that that can be difficult and social batteries run out, but please don't run to redit because you feel she should have handled it differently.

If you feel like this is an actual issue and not somebody not used to your store, and you haven't already, take it to your shift, talk to them about it.
And if that doesn't help talk to your SM.

this is pretty much what supervisors are supposed to do, i generally remind my baristas about the sani rags on counters and why they aren't supposed to be there. if you're questioning why your shift is trying to do their job maybe you're not seeing the bigger picture here. if someone is put at warming, they stay at warming and a 2nd bar partner, the ssv, or the support parnter goes to help the bar, that's basic deployment stuff we learn in training.

i think you need to adjust to her way of running her floor and if there are bigger issues go to your SM, but imo you're being stubborn about a ssv doing their job.
converselvr 2 points 1y ago
We are all getting used to the new ways because the precious shifts did not run things super strictly as she does. And I stayed on warming I didn’t go over to bar, but the bar partner asked for help because she was behind and I didn’t have any warming. So I felt like I should have helped her but was told otherwise.

as a group it's hard to come around to a ssv who's doing their job right at a brand new store. i was lucky to always have shifts that had a nice approach to stuff and gently coached me.

in the event that you're still having issues with her, it isn't a big deal to ask to talk to her one on one so you both communicate your feelings on the stuff you brought up in your original post. we have different job expectations so we can't assume what she's thinking or how many tasks are on her list.

That sounds like she’s just doing her job, sorry. Maybe your past shifts were just bad at it. You shouldn’t be staying past your shift, I agree with that. But asking someone to do tasks BEFORE they are scheduled to be off it’s totally standard. It sounds like she’s a bit micro-managey, but you can’t blame her for enforcing health code (the towel stuff)

Have you asked your SM about it? That should be your first move
Normal_Human_4567 2 points 1y ago
Nah, that's fair. Also, this?

>When people are off for the day she always gives them a long list of things to do before they leave!

Pretty sure this is illegal. Tax dodging or something? If you've clocked out, you've clocked out. If your shift is over, it's done. Nobody can make you stay unless you WANT to stay.
Noobplzforgive 5 points 1y ago
I'm sure this is before clocking out lol
converselvr 2 points 1y ago
It is before clocking out, but people never seem
To want to do it when they’re supposed to be off lol
Normal_Human_4567 3 points 1y ago
Yeah, that's totally fair? Why should they?

"Taking her job way too seriously." People are there to work, follow the rules, and get paid. Just because someone doesn't slack off and follows the towels rules doesn't mean they are a problem. She probably wants to make starbucks a career and promote to an asm, which most dms are asses about wanting you to be the perfect anal shiftlead that can get results. In California at least, managers can make over 100,000$ a year, and you bet your ass if I had a shot at it I'd be on you like that.

Yeah some of those rules she’s enforcing she’s well within her right to: the towel stuff are all health code violations for good reason. People are supposed to stay planted so their stations don’t go unattended to. Keeping everyone late just to get more tasking done is ridiculous. At some jobs in the food industry your arrival and departure times are definitely more in the way of suggestions than musts but Starbucks is strict about labor. I think some people can be a little unreasonable about having to leave exactly on time on principle (not because they actually gotta go) because a little late is no big deal but like a little late is not an hour and a half after closing. I’ve stayed that late before to close but only with explicit consent from the baristas and only because the store was falling apart and we didn’t want everything to keep rolling over since that’s only more work down the road.

I also don’t get paid more or less based off of customer connections. I cannot understand why a supervisor would care about that. If business is slow I’m concerned because that means less hours for the baristas but if business is fine or booming then who cares about a customer connection score?

However, even maintaining a customer connection score is technically a supervisor’s job. I don’t think you’re wrong for not wanting to deal with that or for not wanting to stay super late for no reason but y’all gotta get over being planted and health code. If someone needs help on bar get her to work out who is going over to help.
