for this reason, you had best believe that I am going to milk that single 10 minute break to its greatest extent @sbux
Normal_Human_4567 38 points 1y ago
Start smoking and you get 5 mins every hour, paid for by starbucks xx

(or get a fake cigarette and pretend you started smoking)
GrandOlFag 43 points 1y ago
Not a bad idea. I’m already gambling the health of my lungs at sbux every time I go in to that covid-soup of a store.
rlogranite 21 points 1y ago
I believe everyone who orders a medicine ball has covid
elodieme1 6 points 1y ago
I've never worked at a store that allowed you to get extra breaks to smoke. Other restaurants, yes, but not Starbucks

you don't actually have to stay late. you can just say no. you're only required to work the hours you're scheduled for.
GrandOlFag 31 points 1y ago
Ideally, yes. But because of our epic grind set, you will be told you can’t leave or get treated like shit (eg. 2-4 hours on Window when it’s below 0), because my shifts will always have some more tasks for you to do before you leave :)
OneRoseDark 32 points 1y ago
1) retaliation is against policy; talk to PRC or your upper management (DM or above) if you feel you're being punished for adhering to scheduled hours

2) you can just clock out. you do not need permission. you don't need a manager code. you can just say nope, sorry, my time's up, and walk away.
GrandOlFag 13 points 1y ago
… what? we’ve been told by our SM that if we don’t have the all-clear from the shift to leave, we can’t. big if true.
eckinz 14 points 1y ago
They’re legally not allowed to keep you after your scheduled time, also if you have to stay longer than 10 mins depending on you’re state you should be eligible for predictability pay, the written logs for it are in the time punch area of the book!
dthomp0806 12 points 1y ago
False. You can leave at your scheduled time, no matter what. Even on a closing shift. You don't need anyone's permission.
OneRoseDark 9 points 1y ago
How exactly are they going to keep you there? You are expected to work your scheduled hours. If you're not scheduled, you aren't expected to be there. If you agree to stay late, you can do that. If you don't agree, I have no power to make you.

I can't even send someone home early without their agreement. If I say, "hey Sam, you wanna go home early?" and Sam says no, Sam gets to stay on the clock and I have to ask Devyn or Mac if they wanna go home early instead.

I have literally had to close a store early because everyone on the midshift refused to stay until close when the closers called out sick. Like, this week we had to do that.
Ordinary-Theory-8289 7 points 1y ago
You’re not a slave. They have no authority over your personal time
celloqueer 3 points 1y ago
I can understand wanting ppl on the floor to verbalize that they’re off in order to make sure the ssv assigns whatever you were doing to someone else, but there’s no policy I’m aware of that would require permission to leave. My suggestion would be that at the end of your shift you go to your ssv and say you’re off & ask who’s taking over. If the ssv asks you to do more shit, say you have plans. It literally doesn’t matter if you’re lying about having plans bc it’s none of work’s business what you do after you’re scheduled. If anyone gives you shit about not having permission, ask them to point you to where that policy comes from bc I’m 99% sure it doesn’t exist. If they retaliate, there are steps to take for that.

The only time you have to be there is when you’re scheduled. Anything more is meant to be on a volunteer basis because you want more money.
jelizt 11 points 1y ago
That’s retaliation though. The partners at my store are all lovely people and I like them but when it’s my time to go I’m gone. Unless I personally decide I want to help out a little longer then you shouldn’t feel forced or guilty about not staying.
ilholtstilin 9 points 1y ago
I’m an SSV and I do my very best to give at least a last 5 (in addition to the required 10) when people have a 5.5+ shift because I see what Starbucks is doing there and it’s horseshit 🙂
XMyshelX 8 points 1y ago
I prefer not to have what I call “punishment lunches” you don’t get paid for that time so got a 6 hours I’d rather get the money, as a shift I had definitely had 8-10 hr shifts with no lunch or having to work on my lunch to get everything done.
muthafackin_g_420 7 points 1y ago
yeah it’s def rough, i’m a SSV and my store is currently a mess. i have been working six day work weeks for the last month, only was able to have my half TWICE in a whole month. i feel your pain . i wish this company actually cared about us like they pretend they do
board-certified 7 points 1y ago
do you mean fuck?
angryairheadaries 6 points 1y ago
i will say, as much as this sucks and i 100% sympathize, if you worked a 6 hour shift you’d get a 30 min unpaid break, so you’re still working 5.5 hours just with a longer break. i know that’s kind of up to whoever is cool with having that or not, but personally, i’d hate to be at work longer than scheduled.
also, in regards to coming in early and staying later, i totally agree with other comments here: you don’t have any obligation to stay after or come in early for your shift. you CAN say no.

totally valid! i hate the 5.75 shifts tho cus that’s blatantly not giving someone a break for no reason
celloqueer 3 points 1y ago
I deleted to post a general comment instead since multiple ppl were talking about preferring 5.5s, not just you, but yeah 5.75s are the worst. I come home more tired after one of those than after 7-8 hours at work bc my brain needs that reset time
Rubinaito 4 points 1y ago
Wait is it not normal to be working 6+ hour shifts?
GrandOlFag 21 points 1y ago
That’s normal. But what’s happening is that at 6 hours, you have a required lunch break. This is a work around for them work me for 6 hours without having to give any more than a 10 min break.
b99__throwaway 9 points 1y ago
this law varies by state, just fyi
GrandOlFag 7 points 1y ago
Good to know. However, since the 6-hour rule (as I understand) is written into Sbux policy, it’s fairly universal.
b99__throwaway 8 points 1y ago
in california, the law is you need a lunch after 5 hours. so if you work 5.5 or 6 hours you’re taking a lunch + a 10
eckinz 6 points 1y ago
For us it’s 5 hours (Seattle wa)

Also I kinda like not having to take a lunch, just 30mins I don’t get paid for haha. I don’t mind them for 8 hour shifts though since the break helps break up the monotony
lewabwee 3 points 1y ago
Yeah I don’t understand why someone would want to be there longer just to not get paid anyways
GrandOlFag 2 points 1y ago
Having two jobs. In a 13 hr work day, missing that half hour break stings during the sbux 6 hr stretch.
imathrowayslc 5 points 1y ago
A lunch is time I have to be at work I don't get paid for. I pass whenever possible.
GrandOlFag 9 points 1y ago
Eh, I have two jobs. Being constantly cheated out of breaks during what is, in actuality, a 13 hr work day for me stings.
depressedbarista420 3 points 1y ago
i used to work for aerie and i’d get scheduled for 3.75-ish hour shifts bc at 4 hours they’d have to give me a 10 minute break. i’d ask for a break and they’d say no. such bullshit
devinboyd98 3 points 1y ago
You guys are getting shifts less than 6 hours?¿?¿
celloqueer 3 points 1y ago
I know some people would rather not have the 30 and head out sooner but there are a lot of ppl who would far prefer having the 30. Since I’m an adhd person (so are most of my coworkers lol) I come home with much more remaining energy if I had more breaks to disconnect & reset than if I had to brute force myself to try to stay focused for nearly 3 hours in a row. A 5.75 leaves me feeling waaaay worse than a 7 hr shift.

If you have SSVs who are nice, sometimes they’ll be willing to work things out so that you can stay a little longer and get the lunch or drop the lunch & leave early, but this depends on the managerial culture.
Gameb0i6 2 points 1y ago
It sounds like you’re complaining about the fact that you’re getting more hours. Baristas at my store usually only get 4 or 4.5 hr shifts. 🙄
jordimakesgames 1 points 1y ago
it's bs, they would be perfectly fine being down a partner for 30 min if they're gonna work you 6 hours anyways because they want you to stay longer to get things 'caught up'
mulderufo13 2 points 1y ago
Lol I recently had a 2.50 hour shift 🥴🥴 I feel your pain
devinboyd98 2 points 1y ago
You’re a better employee than me… Zero chance I would show up for that😂😂
mulderufo13 3 points 1y ago
I did just to get a sandwich and drink lmao one hour basically paid for that food
_notaprilbutmayy 1 points 1y ago
my 5.75 shift last weekend turned into an 8 hour shift with no lunch. my 4 hour shift yesterday turned into a 6.15 hour shift without a lunch. i’m a minor 😭😭
