How hard is it to not be creepy? (vent)(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by vandilor
there’s a 65+ dude who comes in around 11 in the drive thru and is always creepy. the first time i didn’t know how to handle it because it’s never happened before and just said no when he asked to give me his number. last time i took his order and the box and asked my shift to do the window transaction. today he comes through and i just hope he’s not weird. wrong. “thank you baby” “please don’t call me baby” “ok sweetheart” at this point i’m like getting upset “please don’t call me ANYTHING” “you really are beautiful”
at this point his coffee is ready and i just hand it to him and don’t say anything i had a quiver in my voice for like the next ten minutes and one of the partners was like that was creepy. it was so upsetting from that small interaction
i don’t know. nothing like this has ever happened to me and i think it worse because i’m at work. it fucking sucks to be perceived as a female fuck him and his shitty taste in coffee

As a female, it sucks to BE female. I’ve taken to directly addressing the creepiness in as professional a manner as possible (while at work, at least). People sometimes back off if you directly address their behavior. If I’m not at work, I’ll aggressively address.
Don’t give them loopholes. Baby isn’t okay? Well how about … “Pet names are inappropriate. You can call me X or I would prefer you not address me.”
By all means report them to upper management, especially if they are a regular.
Bluntness works too. “I’m not interested.” Mildly disgusted face. Pass coffee and close door and walk away.

I guess you could ask a male barista to help him the next time you see him?

i will get my shifts to “help” him and hopefully get him banned :)

Don't say please. When they take it that way. Be loud, abrupt, and rude as needed. ""DO NOT CALL ME THAT." walk away asap, treat them as the nuisance they are. No jokes or sugar coating or politeness once they go there. Management better back you up.

You should file an incident report, just to have a paper trail. That is most definitely harassment. Make an incident report every time it happens and let your shift on duty and SM know immediately. And then you will be able to get him banned if he doesn't stop the behavior.
Under no circumstances should you have to put up with this shit, at work or anywhere else. And if your SM doesn't take care of this situation, take it up to your DM and keep going up.
I'm sorry this happened to you. And you can even just not interact with him. If you see him at the speaker or window, just tell someone else to do that transaction for you.
