Anyone else get rashes from the sanitizer water/washing hands often? How do you treat it? (reddit.com)
submitted by _marissafrances
CTcoreyCT 194 points 1y ago
You need to see a doctor for a proper treatment, and call Sedgwick. That’s not good. Even if you don’t see a doctor, you still should call Sedgwick and file a claim/open a case.
No-While7830 73 points 1y ago
I thought it was just me. Anytime touch sani buckets or in the dish pit, I’m always itchy afterwards. Thank jeevus for the bottle of lubiderm we have stashed in the back..
FrustratingBears 23 points 1y ago
sani water allergy gang!

if i get sani on my hands i try to wash or rinse them the first chance i get

and when i get home, Curel for dry, itchy skin

i’ve seen a few people mention that if partners make the sani with hot water it can make chemical burns worse, so i’m going to talk to my sm or manager i guess to make sure people make it with cold ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
SaevioAvis 14 points 1y ago
Fun fact. The standard temperature for sanitizer is actually 75°F. There is Partner Hub resources for it,if you wanted to show a standard to your SM, as well. Should never be hot, as it can burn off some of the sanitizer chemicals.
xujnesx 32 points 1y ago
looks like eczema to me, maybe triggered by the sani? always make sure the sani water is luke warm, Not hot!! hot sani tends to trigger allergic reactions more!! and if you can rinse with water after touching sani and make sure to always moisturize your hands and dryness can make things worse but ultimately like everyone said go see a doctor to hopefully figure out for sure what the rash is !! and it’s definitely worth reporting to sedgwick still!!
ShoutOut2MyMomInOhio 16 points 1y ago
That’s what I thought too, either eczema or contact dermatitis?

You should show this to a doctor and see what they say. Is the rash painful or itchy?
ConfusionDisastrous8 21 points 1y ago
Aquaphor is incredible. It looks like eczema though. You should probably see a Dr to be properly treated. OTC stuff works well too.
hecaete47 14 points 1y ago
The sani water triggered very bad eczema for me that I’m still dealing with over half a year after leaving Starbucks. Go see a doctor asap to start treatment early and try to avoid the sani water.
RinnTheOtter 13 points 1y ago
My husband avoids the sanitizer at all Costs, washing his hands
StefaniRose820 11 points 1y ago
Check to make sure the sanitizer is at the ratio of solution to water. Also that your team is using cool, to lukewarm water. Anything hotter than lukewarm can give chemical burns.
Meggilli91 7 points 1y ago
Buy a pair of elbow length rubber gloves for washing dishes. My hands were like this too
AwstinEvans 6 points 1y ago
I thought this was just me!!! I don't think it's a matter of dry skin because we have a bottle of hand lotion I use constantly. It has to be something with the chemicals in the soaps.
Badass_Bratz 1 points 1y ago
Sameeee
Electrical_Metal_106 5 points 1y ago
The best advice I’ve gotten is to use Desitin. It’s a zinc diaper rash ointment. It helps so much with the red rash and cuts. However for the dry ashy hands, I find that Cetaphil works great. I used O’Keefe’s too and that isn’t bad. It’s an ongoing issue.
HorrorEmployment6601 4 points 1y ago
I literally have this exact problem. My hands look horribly disfigured by that shit. I use super cold water and then baby powder to help stop the burning
Mammer11 4 points 1y ago
This happens to me.
It’s to the point where I can’t work multiple days in a row without being in agonizing pain after.

I feel as though it’s something to contact Starbucks is about at this point.
hdmp3converter 3 points 1y ago
Also, if your hands do this when you touch Sani, you shouldn’t touch sani at all tell your sm about your allergy
FrustratingBears 1 points 1y ago
what alternatives are there to using it? especially on bar?

i have the same reaction to this stuff as OP
hdmp3converter 1 points 1y ago
well that’s tricky because you have to clean the wand, and the companies policy states that sani is the only thing you can clean it with. i’ve seen people use gloves. but if ur allergy won’t let you touch a cleaning towel, i’m not sure if it’s the best place to work considering a lot of the store is cleaned with that chemical
FrustratingBears 2 points 1y ago
yeah that’s kinda what i figured

i’ve been getting by with rinsing sanitizer off my hands as frequently as i’m able, but it’s definitely one of those things that compounds every day i work. gloves for dish duty and just grin and bear it for bar i guess
rlogranite 3 points 1y ago
You may be allergic to it
ThankfulWonderful 3 points 1y ago
That looks like someone made the sani with hot water - gotta make the sani with cool water. That’s a chemical burn for sure and perhaps you’ve got sensitive skin: but I’ve seen people get burned by the sani like that just from it being too hot.
ItzBoogieMan 3 points 1y ago
Mate theta an allergic reaction if I’m correct
Mysterious-Shelter21 3 points 1y ago
make sure the sani is always room temp as well, the hotter it is, the more harmful it is to the skin. i always wore gloves when doing dishes, and tried to wash up after using sani rags
Apart_Director7325 3 points 1y ago
Sanitizer!! Stay away from it.
Klaus_Unechtname 2 points 1y ago
My brother had something similar happen in response to the chemicals his food service job was using. In short, it took months to clear up completely even after he was prescribed the right medication. The problem was even with treatment, he was still facing daily exposure at work - the problem didn’t go away until he quit. Similarly, my skin’s health has been amazing since I left Starbucks.
I hope your hands get better soon :/
kendrasparker 2 points 1y ago
i used to get horrible rashes and itchiness from the sanitizer. the only thing that stopped it was when i quit basically. it went away a few weeks after that
DarlingMollie 2 points 1y ago
Looks like contact dermatitis? Over the counter Corticosteroids worked pretty well for me, maybe give that a shot? If you have insurance set up it should be free!
Sentarry 2 points 1y ago
i have this issue too. I can't be constantly washing dishes by hand and gloves dry out my skin then I get water bubbles or blisters on the top of my hands. Its also very itchy. any thing that dries out my skin, I avoid it as much as possible.
cuervoescondido 2 points 1y ago
In addition to what others are saying, avoid hand washing dishes as much as possible.
_circuts 2 points 1y ago
Moisturize often, happens to me too. But definitely not to that extent definitely see a doc. That cant be comfortable.
loyal872 1 points 6m ago
Late to the party. For me it was a combination of wheat (sort of a gluten but more serious) allergy and the use of hand sanitizer.

Cortizone-10 trust me

Wash good with gentle body soap and slather it in Cerave from the tub. Mine got so bad I was coving my hands in vaseline, wrapping them in athletic tape, and wearing gloves. They would crack from even bending my fingers and the blood became a health risk. Yet my manager told me I couldn’t make a claim…
Practical-Mind3174 1 points 1y ago
Being pale doesn't help us yes.
Drekavie_is_Dead 1 points 1y ago
I struggled with this super bad as well, it ended up infecting some of the cuts I had on my arm from work (I’m a hot mess), and was super itchy and the dishwashing gloves at work kinda suck so I found these gloves on Amazon that are super long and heat resistant, (I can grab stuff straight out of the Hobart!), and honestly it really saved my skin.

makmelaf17 1 points 1y ago
One of my partners does... she just don't handle the sani...
mrsastro 1 points 1y ago
If it’s what I have (and about 80% of us in food service), it’s contact dermatitis. My dr prescribed Hydrocortisone ointment 2.5%. I only use that about every three days, because if you use it daily, it makes your skin thinner. The other days I use an OTC , CeraVe. I put it on at night and wear cotton gloves so it can soak in and not get all over my sheets. I’m also a liberal user of the gloves at work. Sorry you’re dealing with this! I hope you get better soon.
fro-froyo 1 points 1y ago
Yes but not ad bad. Get a pair of durable long dish gloves and use them anytime you use saniwater
Jeep_grandcherokee 1 points 1y ago
Bro came on Reddit for medical advice 💀 do me a favor as a fellow chad man and go see a doctor
flavava 1 points 1y ago
Yes this happens to me! I get super itchy and break out in small hives.
changbinsomnia 1 points 1y ago
no but sometimes my hand/arm will start to itch from it. i usually try to think of something else in hopes the itching will stop
Dustwitch93 1 points 1y ago
I have to wear gloves even when I'm on hot bar or the sani makes my whole hand break out with eczema. It's absolutely horrible. I also can't be in the back while I'm filling the sani sink tbh because it makes me cough horribly. Idk what it's made of but it's liquid evil.

omg I would get a little rash and my hands have cracked before but never this bad…the best thing to do is avoid the sanitizer and not wash the dishes unless your manager or shift can make sure the PH is right
CheyenneJudith 1 points 1y ago
Legit I thought it was just me! I got sent home early for an allergic reaction on my hand from the sanitizer.
v_is_4_violet 1 points 1y ago
No rash but the smell of it makes me want to vomit. My first shift it actually made me vomit. Most times it's fine but every once in a while if I'm away from work for several days in a row the smell makes me want to vomit all over again. It's sooooo weird. I'm not someone who is usually sensitive to smells either... In fact I like the smell of most cleaning chemicals 🥴
hfgkvjf 1 points 1y ago
I have eczema and sometimes it gets triggered by the Sani water so what I usually do is I try to keep my hands as clean as possible at work and once I get home I’ll put cortizone on my hand and it’ll be good by the next day
Cultural-Ad1167 1 points 1y ago
I feel so seen. I’m sorry you have to deal with this daily. thanks for sharing because I thought I was weird.
gabby24681 1 points 1y ago
So I am not the person for how to treat it once it’s there but I would recommend using a test strip in the water to make sure it’s not too high. That’s all I know
ilovelimes333 1 points 1y ago
nah this doesnt happen to me but it does burn my nose so bad. like when i inhale it i can feel it down my throat :/
Grouchy_Water_2206 1 points 1y ago
that happens to me every time i wash my hands it’s terrible. i use cerave and benadryl anti itch cream to get to stop burning. it keeps me up at night with how itchy it gets.
bunny_rose422 1 points 1y ago
Yikes. I get really bad eczema on my fingers and hands from it. I have to use a steroid ointment called Fluocinonide on my hands as well as cetafil lotion and hydrocortisone cream.
jmills1888 1 points 1y ago
Gloves in a bottle works great.
It is a lotion that puts a barrier on your skin, especially for cleaning tasks.
femalehomosapien18 1 points 1y ago
Yes but never that bad omgggg
isacherry 1 points 1y ago
Corn Huskers lotion is awesome!! It’s a “heavy duty hand treatment.” Basically just a super moisturizing hand gel. It feels really nice on your skin too.
losinglittlebylittle 1 points 1y ago
My hands are the exact same way! Every time I’m on shift and it gets too painful everyone laughs for wearing latex gloves but it helps a bit. I often close so I’m constantly sanitising everything all day long lol
steam_rolls 1 points 1y ago
I had this happen a bunch while I was still with the company, a doc told me it was cellulitis but at this point idk. Even tho I left the company back in December, I still struggle with skin problems on my hands.
sh0werrod 1 points 1y ago
Unfortunately this happens to me very often. I’m also allergic to the restroom cleaner, so my knuckles are always torn up. my only recommendation is to use petroleum jelly rather than any kind of lotion. I’d try aloe too but only if it’s natural. Anything that’s scented or super artificial will hurt like a bitch. However those do look like hives and I would 100% see a doctor if it continues or gets worse. I wish you the best!
Necessary_Low939 1 points 1y ago
U are allergic. U need to wear gloves. I don’t experience it myself and like to bathe in it when I’m on bar.
julianalu_ 1 points 1y ago
My doctor gave me eczema cream and it’s been helping a lot! Not sure if you want to use steroid creams but it’s the only thing that helped me and I use it along with aquaphor
Joranaxis 1 points 1y ago
Pretty much our entire crew is allergic to the sanitizer to varying degrees. We all just have to work through it and take turns at suffering 🙃🙃 Im one of the ones who have it the least bad at it just makes me dry, pink, and a lil itchy, but some of my coworkers get full hives if they have to do a full load of dishes
Impatientone93 1 points 1y ago
So the Sanitizer water we use has a warning on the bottle to not touch with your bare hands and if you do rinse for 15 minutes. I was never warned about this and now I have minor chemical burns on my hands and they dry out and crack
sh3nan1gans_ 1 points 1y ago
I’m extremely allergic to it. I spilt an entire little container on my leg once and had to work through it. When I got home there was a huge rash and over the course of days it spread. I went to a doctor and got some super strength hydro cortisone cream to treat it. I suggest you do the same. If you can’t, aloe Vera gel and regular cortisone helps!! It’s because the Sani has extremely strong chemicals in it, and for most people (who have sensitive skin) it leads to a nasty reaction
xkcismex 1 points 1y ago
where the gloves and rinse afterwards for dishwashing. also i had a partner who was allergic to the sanitizer solution so that’s a possibility as well.
leeblissy 1 points 1y ago
oh jesus yours is way worse than mine, but yes absolutely ive had this happen. what ive been doing is washing my hands and immediately lotioning up and putting on gloves and doing my damn best not to get any sani in the gloves. HOWEVER. at one point my hands were so broken and damaged that even just putting on gloves made my finger bleed.

use the sanis at your own discretion, but for the love of god take the sanitizer dangers seriously. if its hot, DUMP IT. if you feel like even using the sani rags with gloves is too much of a risk, DONT USE THEM. and please, if your store doesn't have a full bottle of lotion for everyone to use at the ready, raise hell because starbucks is supposed to supply them for everybody. my store is still not doing that so ive been bringing my own, but I think I'll bring it up again soon because I've had other coworkers complaining about dry hands around me.

and obviously see a doctor and call Sedgwick. my god if my hands looked like THAT because of sbux id probably quit on the spot 💀
SukikyoXY 1 points 1y ago
make sure you aren’t using sami water that’s too hot or it will make you prone ti hives/rash
junoseagoat 1 points 1y ago
This happened to me! I didn’t know what it was and I was freaking out, but the two things that make me go through this is the oven cleaner and hot sanitizer water! Be careful with both, I’ve started avoiding them and I only do dishes with room temp water.
Normal-Lock4939 1 points 1y ago
YES it hurts so bad. i just try not to itch it and put on eucerin lotion. should prob get it checked out tho
Hazel_is_Trans 1 points 1y ago
Same
Kind_Flamingo7872 1 points 1y ago
Always wash your hands with warm water and soap after cleaning dishes.
Intelligent-Kiwi-574 1 points 1y ago
That looks like eczema. You need to find a way not to let the sanitizer touch your skin, and try to keep the area dry.
_sunflowers_27_59 1 points 1y ago
With the sani at my store, we dilute it so that doesn't happen because of the chemicals in it and how strong they are. Try that when you are working, it might help!!
rennitz 1 points 1y ago
I do, so I don't touch it. If I ever have to, then I rinse off immediately. My managers have been very understanding. If I need to get dishes out of it, then I use tongs.

It looks like you, too, have an allergy to Kay Chemical sanitizer my friend.
shiftyclub 1 points 1y ago
i’ve struggled with eczema my whole life and the sani makes it flare up constantly :( all i can do is keep my hands moisturized and use an eczema cream when it gets really bad
Dazzling_Cut_6862 1 points 1y ago
I have eczema and that’s what happens to me if I don’t wash the sani off after I touch it. I recommend asking your doctor for a heavy duty cream to help it. I also use eczema lotion on a daily. 😬
lewabwee 1 points 1y ago
I always recommend oil based moisturizers. Water based stuff is great for adding moisture back to dry hands but oil is needed for what basically amounts to burns or rashes caused by eczema.

And yeah sani water is awful for everybody’s hands. I use gloves and the Hobart as often as possible. Never submerge my hands fully into a sink full of it, if possible.
LZARDKING 1 points 1y ago
Just so everyone knows when you’re doing dishes you do not need to fill the third compartment sink with sanitizer. You can just fill it with hot water as long as you’re running things through the Hobart as the Hobart is a sanitizer. And I generally just use the same bar towel throughout a shift until the sanny is changed and usually rinse it immediately. But if this persists after making these changes you can request your manager buy some non-scented lubriderm for the store, that’s the only lotion we’re allowed to use on the floor. I also coat my hands in a thin layer of neosporin and leave them like that in like hand gloves? For an hour or so when my hands get this bad during the winter. Hope this helps!
GreenBoysenberry2065 1 points 1y ago
Hey! I have two partners who are actually allergic to the sanitizer. Your store manager should be able to call and get a special kind of sanitizer for when you’re on bar. Also in the buckets. It’s also by law (eco sure health) that you have dish gloves in the back! Hope this helps!
SexyLavender 1 points 1y ago
I got the same thing. It is likely contact dermatitis. Unfortunately, avoidance is it the only way to truly help it but you should see a doctor for some temporary treatment
hdmp3converter 1 points 1y ago
I’ve heard that mixing the soap and the sanitizer can exaggerate the irritation, your store should have a topical ointment in the first aid, also a rehydrating lotion would also help
RareLingonberry 1 points 1y ago
Highly recommend seeing a dermatologist in case you have any underlying skin conditions that you’re not aware of! It always helps to use gloves when you can as well since we have to dry our hands out soo much between hand washing, dishes, and sani buckets. I’ve also noticed a lot of partners don’t know that the sanitizer needs to be ph strip tested every single time you draw it into the bucket. If the ph is out of range it won’t clean effectively and it can cause permanent skin damage so always always ALWAYS test it for your own safety as well! And don’t be afraid to ask your SM to buy lotions for the store!
BetaWolf720 1 points 1y ago
As someone with eczema, that's what I see in this. Especially when the pandemic started, we were all washing our hands extremely excessively, just don't scrub your skin too hard especially. Aquaphor or unscented lotion will work, and make sure if you're cleaning dishes that the sani water is cool not warm, that severely reacts more to anyone's skin if you're hands are submerged for any amount of time.
[deleted] 1 points 1y ago
i started putting aquaphor on my hands because they did this and it started going away after a few days! try it out, i hope it helps. i still you should see a doctor still though, maybe a dermatologist :)
