Because “they don’t have enough labor” but you know what happened at my store today. 2 of my store managers sat in the cafe during peak having a hiring interview with someone who not only has worked at the store before but has already been picking up shifts. But we can’t have more help on the floor because labor.
sero50743 points1y ago
Wtaf. We have a new partner that’s being trained and yesterday had an interviewee. What is going on?!
SavannaHeat38 points1y ago
My hours just got cut too. What the heck is going on?
frogsteam59 points1y ago
nationwide campaign to frustrate tenured partners to make them quit and control the hiring process to curate anti union green beans

Someone pin this comment!!
overturned2320 points1y ago
me when i have 20 hours as ssv next week
CheyenneJudith18 points1y ago
I work in the highest volume store in my state and my hours got cut to 20. I had to fight with my managers this week to weasel my way into 36 hours. And even still they are sending people home halfway through their shift. I’ve never seen anything like this and I’ve been a partner at my location for a few years.
BeardiesRule1121 points1y ago
They aren’t allowed to send people home. They can ask if you’d like to leave early, but they can’t make you.
CheyenneJudith1 points1y ago
Yes technically they cannot but they can beg you to go home. And then get pissed at you if you don’t.
BeardiesRule1121 points1y ago
I’ve never been begged in 3 years so idk. Who cares if they’re pissed, it’s your hours you’ve already been scheduled for.
CheyenneJudith2 points1y ago
Yea but that is just one issue. The main one is not scheduling
Hawkeye33669918 points1y ago
I have worked off and on at Sbux. All the way back in 2008 was my first go. They ran the hours super tight back then as well. And the other times I came back to Sbux I only got more guaranteed hours cause I was shift and then management. But we were always told to keep the other staffs hours down to minimum as much as possible. It’s how Sbux operates unfortunately.
sero50741 points1y ago
Why is that??
Enough_Raise_716716 points1y ago
Consistently, every week for the past couple of months I get two 4 or 5-hour shifts, and every week, when I'm about to leave one of those short shifts, my SM is like, "Why are you off so early? Who made that schedule?" Um... you did, dude. Like, what? I don't understand if they're joking or not.
herpaslurp14 points1y ago
we're entering our slower season, so hours across the board will be lowered. To remedy that you could work at other locations or transfer to a higher volume store.
The way they assign hours sucks but also makes sense. You can have a conversation with your SM too if you need the money to pay rent or something and they might be able to have you work extra on some superfluous cleaning task 🤷♂️
changbinsomnia [OP]7 points1y ago
i might talk to them idk. i already work at one of the highest volume stores in ohio so going to any other ones near me wouldnt do much. i'll have to figure it out :/
herpaslurp6 points1y ago
in my experience, high volume == a lot of cleaning opportunities.
At my current store we have a giant ladder and I relish every moment I get to use it. Our ceiling is something like 12 feet high, so whenever we have the labor I'm up there dusting the top of cabinets and light fixtures. The whole deal with the ladder feels so out of place that I find it very amusing.
tl:dr cleaning can be fun, just have to find each mundane task's saving grace
dakokopuffs13 points1y ago
not to mention, selling 2 drinks usually averages to the amount we get paid an hour considering most drinks are $7+ with all of the modifications people add. two drinks is all it takes to keep a barista there for an hour, and we sell hundreds every single day. plus this "slow season" hasn't even been slow. it's all bs.
changbinsomnia [OP]8 points1y ago
agreed. this is stressing me out. i love working at starbucks but this is the biggest load of bullshit i've ever seen.
ncvcrcvcr11 points1y ago
i know right,,,, i used to be scheduled to 32 hours each week, sometimes a little bit lower and sometimes higher, but my schedules for the next upcoming weeks went down to 22-20 hours which is a huge drop. lately ive just been seeing if any of my partners need their shifts taken or even offering to stay a bit later if they need the extra help, but i hate how its not as much as i normally work. idk- ive been thinking of getting a second job just for the extra money but none of the places hiring near me interests me much either. btw i love your username :)
bonersz10 points1y ago
not really sure how i'm supposed to make rent when i went from working 30-35 hours to now working FIFTEEN..... but okay LMFAO
changbinsomnia [OP]5 points1y ago
right. i have upcoming invisaline i have to pay about $800 out of pocket for and i wanna help my mom with the bills. this is really frustrating.
PaleontologistLoud3710 points1y ago
literally everyone at my store rn like wtf??? they even cut one of my ssv's hours so badly that she's considered part time and might lose her health insurance
persona-21 points1y ago
She needs an average of 20 hours per week spread across like 6 months to keep her health insurance. 1-2 weeks under that won’t do much. Most SSVs get at least 20 hours if not 30.
brokenleftjoycon7 points1y ago
My store is low volume but we cannot keep up with cleaning and restocking tasks with how few people get scheduled at a given time. It’s starting to look an absolute mess with hours cut (we had clean plays cut too). Several of us are ready to quit.
Starbucks can raise prices (why is a venti pike over $3???) but can’t give hours? Yeah. Fuck this.
frappeyourmom2 points1y ago
So if even clean plays are being cut, does that mean those were performative too?
(I mean, I know the answer is yes, but still)
actualgabeitch7 points1y ago
No literally. Was scheduled for 8.5 this week (I have time off for the end of this wk), then got a call saying that one of my shifts was being cut. So now I’m scheduled literally 4 hours this week. Next day I saw them interviewing three different people within an hour 😐
ftsktln6 points1y ago
I have benefits and my hours were cut. Can’t wait to be told I can’t have health insurance anymore 🙃
bisexualgirlboss5 points1y ago
Yep yep! I’ve gone through a few managers within a few months and my 4th manager cut my hours tremendously and ended up getting overtime three weeks in a row and even now, my hours are still being cut as many as other people and the busyness at my store has barely changed but we are also one of the busiest stores in my district. But my store had been cracking down on labor laws and all that mess, it’s a wack time rn
Capricious-Coco3 points1y ago
They keep hiring people but can hardly give me or my current coworkers our minimum hours, make it make sense
changbinsomnia [OP]1 points1y ago
this exactly. we have so many new hires yet some people are only getting scheduled one day a week. its berserk.
sero50743 points1y ago
Me too. Our store it’s partly due to constant call outs and not being reliable, partly due to its the slower months, and partly bc we’re having to 'earn our labour'. I finally have a decent schedule again next week bc I picked up 2 shifts putting me at 38.50 hours, like my hours are supposed to be. I’ve been working 20s and 25s since January. I guess just show up and show out so you’ll become the favorite and get more hours. That’s also a key at my store.
crzyshiba3 points1y ago
Damn me and my coworker same thing while the other two shifts literally get over 30 we are barely getting 30 their like ohh we need to cut labor but then I feel it’s like favoritism
sixsmallsheep2 points1y ago
our local store had every employee quit and someone from my store had to cover there all alone 🗿
Asleep-Steak-38532 points1y ago
i know personally with our store, when covid rates were getting higher again we hired a lot of people due to isolations. but now we haven’t had a case of covid in 2 months so we are wayyy overstuffed. also my manager said labor is over even though on weekends we struggle and have times where there is only 3 people on the floor during a rush
IAMACHRISTMASWIZARD2 points1y ago
i went from 36 hours a week on average to 20, i think i’m gonna have to change my availability and get another job:/
changbinsomnia [OP]1 points1y ago
i might ask to switch over to full time or something. i wish starbucks wasnt so stingy with their money
Blue-Sky13252 points1y ago
That’s me. I’m use to 35-38 hours & im lucky to get 25 now
Deep-Device-35992 points1y ago
U have a 30hr for a week? I have 30hours for half month
changbinsomnia [OP]2 points1y ago
that was the first time i was scheduled for 30 hours but i covered abt another 6 hrs of a coworkers shift bc i was bored. this upcoming week i have 25.75 scheduled, then next week is 25.00 and then it drops to 15.75. its something i cant stop stressing about. its been bothering me all day
thatrecordbackwards1 points1y ago
Yeah we're getting it pinned on a new DM but i got mine cut from 20-25 to 10-15 >:( they think we ain't gonna talk huh
dontgiveah00t1 points1y ago
I’m a relatively new partner and they cut a whole shift to put me below the 20 minimum for benefits with less than 24 hours notice, and none of the surrounding stores have shifts they need filled.
Jennapea981 points1y ago
I went from 28-33 hours a week to 21. It was less for 2 weeks but I told my SM I’ll lose my benefits. Yes we were short staffed through January and even closed a few days due to isolations. They used that reason to hire 5 new people last month. That’s 100 hours the rest of us lost cumulatively. I’m just trying to hang on until they bump our pay this summer but who knows if that’s June or September. I don’t want to quit. I really love my job
HiiAlberta1 points1y ago
So coming from a financial background im curious to know what the reason is. Prices increased and theres an increased demand. But bruh why
Babs92201 points1y ago
This is disgusting and I'm so glad I quit and don't support them anymore. I'm sorry this is happening, you don't deserve this. So f***ed up.
deslobu1 points1y ago
I used to get 26-30 hours a week and now i’m getting 12-15 hours. We aren’t using my checks to pay the bills but this is hardly making a dent in our savings account. Not to mention I was told I don’t qualify for maternity leave anymore so I’ll be putting in my 2 weeks.
LoanFar67541 points1y ago
i get like 8 hours a week
tryrenee1 points1y ago
Went from 40 to 26
changbinsomnia [OP]2 points1y ago
thats bs. im sorry :(
st0nkb0nk1 points1y ago
I'm scheduled. For 14 hours. I have full open availability. I know it's apparently always slow this time of year but damn my paychecks about to be $3.49 😭
Human_person-20031 points1y ago
I got 7 hours for one day
Necessary_Low9391 points1y ago
I also get 0 hrs. I think they just want me to quit.
overturned231 points1y ago
I feel like you’ve said you got 0 hours for weeks now… I think you were fired
Necessary_Low9393 points1y ago
Yeah I’ve been zero hrs for 3 weeks now. No im not fired. No warnings, etc.
overturned233 points1y ago
You should probably speak to your SM. I was taken off the schedule for a week but not 3.
Necessary_Low9393 points1y ago
He said he will put me back on
Affectionate_Fart1 points1y ago
As someone who only works sbux as a means for benefits (aka ASU) I love that I’m scheduled 20-25 hours a week because I have a second job in an ED with openings. Can’t say I’m always happy to have two jobs but it helps. Also, going to nursing school for a year helped to understand how to live on a super tight budget.
