What would you like to see in a barista trainer? (self.starbucksbaristas)

I’m gonna do some barista trainer training in a few days . What would you would’ve liked to know when you first started? I’m looking to becoming a shift supervisor in the future, but I gotta go through this training first. Also, any shift supervisors have any advice?

That you will hardly ever be on bar. New beans are for drive through only for months.

I would’ve like to known it’s a lotta work. Also everyone will come to you for questions. A lot of my trainees only ask me for help. During their training I told them they should mainly ask shifts, and trainers if they have questions because a lot of people were hired at the same time and have been doing things wrong. So be prepared to answer the same questions multiple times for different people. Another thing is QUIZ THEM! I thought that one of my trainees understood something so during the end of the shift I quized them and turns out they didn’t get it and partners in the area would hold up a number behind my back to tell them how many shots, I go though all 3 positions on both of the shifts I get them so that I can make sure that it wasn’t just them memorizing it temporarily also it helps me see what needs more work. That’s another thing you should practice more time on what they need more help on. I originally went strictly to the training modules but soon realized that some needed more help on reg like talking loud enough and being comfortable then others or learning to steam milk

your first trainee is a learning experience! ask them to coach you in return too and you can help each other both grow :) good luck!

training is hard and tiring but SO. REWARDING. I train for two stores in my district and i absolutely love it but it is really exhausting work! my favorite thing to do with newbies is have a conversation about their learning style preferences as well as their familiarity with coffee/starbucks prior to training. You are the face of your store to your new trainees! make it exciting and make it fun. i make sure my trainees know they can and should taste anything we’re making that looks good so they can familiarize themselves with our menu. i also make sure to introduce them to ever team member they see. training is so fun! good luck!
