My god. If it weren’t for these bitter ass customers the job wouldn’t be that bad. We do not get paid enough to deal with that shit

> not get *paid* enough to

FTFY.

Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:

* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*

* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*

Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.

Honestly wouldn’t be surprised if she was lying about her mom. You handled things fine, OP. You deserve to be treated with respect and my (old) manager often advocated for calmly communicating a need for respect.
Brgnbo 42 points 1y ago
Dude I wouldn’t be at a Starbucks if my mom just died ?
Giidget 8 points 1y ago
I’ve been working at Starbucks for only 8 months but I’ve had two people come by, sobbing at the speaker, and then when they get to the window one told me their mom died and another told me her sister died. I don’t understand people…
Bulletrayflower 12 points 1y ago
Maybe it’s just comforter food, I’ve had my fair share of crying customers but I try not to ask the reason, I’ll honestly just give them a free pastry.
strang3daysind33d 2 points 1y ago
Yeah if someone that close to me just died, I'd probably have strong urges to nurse a variety of drinks, probably sugary, caffeinated, hot, and/or alcoholic.

The worst part of being a supervisor is when you feel like you have to cater to these customers to get them out of there and/or to make sure no one gets in trouble. Literally hurts my soul every time.

Yeah that woman is just being nasty as hell. There’s no way in hell her mom just died, even in the past month.
JosephineBlow 15 points 1y ago
People like these are jerks who enjoy being mean to other people. They take out their shitty personality on people who work in customer facing jobs because you can’t fight back. These are the type of scum who kick puppies.
You handled it fine, and better than she deserved.

One time I had a customer who told me her mom died in the DT and she was on her way to her funeral. I said, “ aw that sucks I’m sorry” and I offered to give her drink to her for free. But then she said nah it’s okay I never liked the bitch anyways and she tipped us 3 dollars. I still think abt her
ecstatic-hatter 7 points 1y ago
First of all *Karen*, it should be common sense (for you as a regular) to avoid giving $100 bills everytime you come in drive thru - or any fast food really. Second, I'm sorry that you're Mom died. But we're a coffee shop, *not your therapist.* Now please move your entitled face, and $30,000 Tesla, away from my window.
EmotionalPie7 5 points 1y ago
My dad died and I was at a Starbucks just needed to get a few minutes away from the realities of everyone coming by and family staying over. It just was trying to feel normal. But yelling at the employees is not ok at all!
luvloping 5 points 1y ago
But. She got what she wanted. Freee shit. They are All assholes
sh3nan1gans_ 4 points 1y ago
I can’t believe the people that come through some days. And how angry they get when we dont/can’t give change for huge bills. Like it’s NOT our fault.
Sometimes I find it when people get mad over bigger bills they are more than likely always fake bills too :/

Ugh, I low key resent when someone rewards rudeness with free stuff or a recovery card. There is nothing wrong with calmly requesting respect. I am a shift, and if a customer is being rude to my baristas, I try to take over the transaction so that I can get them the hell out and not subject my staff to their toxicity. I will always be polite and do what I can to find a solution, but unless we actually did something wrong, I DO NOT apologize and I don't reward their bad behavior.
* customer service tip I actually learned at a previous job: instead of apologizing, thank them. Example: thank you for understanding, thank you for waiting, thank you for your patience, etc...
We shouldn't have to apologize if we did nothing wrong. Its toxic to make us feel that it's our fault if something doesn't go exactly the way any particular customer wanted it in that exact moment.
And yes, we can still "make the moment right" without being a doormat.
Bulletrayflower 2 points 1y ago
I fucking hate when the shift leads give terrible customers free food, free drinks, refunds + their food/drinks, recovery cards like they do not deserve free shit and it makes me feel some type of way when my higher up’s don’t support me.
Zealousideal-Star448 2 points 1y ago
Geez just cuz your having a bad day doesn’t mean you need to be so ugly to everyone. I’ve had customers crying their eyes out and they are the sweetest ones!
xj376877 1 points 1y ago
No shifts should’ve given her that shit for free I would’ve shut the window in her face

honestly you should have and had every right to say that. you did not verbally attack her, you calmly stated the truth, if she’s having a bad day she can’t go taking it out on everyone.

Yea they updated the recipe a couple of months back, I think it’s dumb that caramel doesn’t go in the actual drink, but now it’s 2 V pumps in the cold brew and two pumps of caramel in the foam
SelocAvrap 2 points 1y ago
Ridiculous. They're setting y'all up for failure
Bulletrayflower 3 points 1y ago
And they just raised the prices of the shots, they’re now $1 per extra shot, they want us to get yelled at quite frequently I see 😄
Necessary_Low939 1 points 1y ago
If her drink sound like it tasted good maybe she wouldn’t have a bad day 🥴
