Marking things out for one adds labor to stores. And also allows our inventory to stay at proper levels. If we don't account for things properly then that's how outages start occurring over time. We get unlimited free drinks every day so what's the issue with having to mark them out? It takes MAYBE a minute.
Especially if a large majority of partners have this same mentality. Then that means a large majority of our inventory is not going to be properly represented and we also then start losing labor we could have kept by doing this. And man our perks for food and drinks are WAY better now than they were before the pandemic started.
I might be crazy but that's just me.
canidieyet_31 points1y ago
Yes, this exactly. It’s also not worth potentially losing my job over a breakfast sandwich. I only eat Starbucks food while I’m working because it’s convenient.
textmeyellowhearts-27 points1y ago
again babe.. this is a billion dollar corporation… not marking out their shit is not gonna stop the sales resulting in what said. the whole idea of what i said really is how ridiculously brainwashed capitalism has us. starbucks can afford letting all of their baristas have unlimited amount of food yet they limit us to 1 food item per day basically. that’s just ridiculous.
*i’d also like to preface that i said i rarely mark out, not that i don’t. u can’t give yourself away either
MatchingColors38 points1y ago
It’s not about whether or not they can afford it. They can. It’s about your specific store’s inventory. Having an accurate inventory count is only beneficial to your store.
Weird-Abalone-200813 points1y ago
i think their point is that by not marking things out WE the baristas are the ones who have to deal with the outages and have to tell customers that we’re out of stuff, not corporate. if markouts are made consistently, inventory would be accurate and we would receive the things we need in a much hastier manner. it sucks having to tell customers that we’re out of a bunch of stuff and it’s so easy to ring up markouts to deter from this. in high traffic stores this is a huge issue so consider yourself lucky if you don’t have to worry about being out of everything
Thee_Lizard_Head10 points1y ago
I don't think you understand what I'm trying to say. These rules are in place for a specific reason.
Yes the company CAN definitely afford to provide these things for us. But we also can't move towards a solution and better perks for ourselves if we aren't following proper procedure currently. . .
textmeyellowhearts-5 points1y ago
the company has had the same rules since they opened. it’s not gonna change. i work at a high volume store. it’s sad that they have u think you should follow these dumb ass rules. this applies to any job that serves food to customers but limits the amount they give to employees or makes them pay for it at a discounted price. do you know much food is in those donation bags that gets thrown out? and again, i of course mark out my limit but i work 6-7 hour shifts. im a normal human being who gets hungry. it’s not like i’m eating 3 bacon goudas on my shift. it’s different things. things are gonna be outaged regardless because we are currently in a pandemic. the fact that starbucks is raising prices while barely giving us a reasonable wage during a whole pandemic is exactly why i don’t mark out the extra stuff. and again, not every barista does this and not every barista will because there’s people like you who think it’s wrong which is totally okay i definitely see your point but to be honest i don’t rlly give a shit ab having to tell the customers ab outages cuz ppl are still gonna order regardless. starbucks is the most used paying service (app) in the world. ppl have hundreds sitting in there. starbucks knows what their doing.

I've been with the company for over 10 years and have worked enough places to know that these systems work. High volume, low volume, cafe, curbside, w/e. And yeah we are in a pandemic and have outages but I'm talking about outages that CAN be controlled by properly using systems that are in place, not current item outages known nationally throughout the company.
persona-21 points1y ago
So if everyone does what they are supposed to around inventory - fifo, counts, mark outs, accurate ringing - then there is very little food in those donation bags. Once in awhile we have a bag, but a lot of nights we have like 5 items. My SM highly dislikes food waste and ours has gone down lately.
brokenleftjoycon2 points1y ago
This. With how often we have to remake drinks and food items (I don’t know what’s with up the bags lately breaking on the bottom a lot) that will never get put into the register, I think Sbux will survive if a few things here and there don’t get marked out.
Status-Ad-389367 points1y ago
Wow, uh, make sure you don’t have any identifying information on your Reddit page because they will try to get you for this lol
starbsbista27 points1y ago
I could be wrong, but doesn’t marking things out help gain labor for the store?
textmeyellowhearts-27 points1y ago
wdym gain labor? the point is i eat probably triple of what we’re allowed to mark out (7 food items) and corporate will flag that if i mark out more than my limit. one day some corporate members showed up out of no where, not even my store manager was aware, to fire a girl cuz she marked out way more than her limit
croissantboyy17 points1y ago
by marking things out and with every purchase made we "gain labor" this means the store manager is allowed more time on the schedule. meaning that you or other partners get to have more hours should you need them and that you won't be understaffed.
basically it allows for more staffing because the system essentially counts how many people we serve daily and allows us a certain amount of hours to schedule based on that. more stuff being marked out (even if you're marking out up to your limit and then just snatching the rest of the food you go through) helps you gain hours
violentfemme171 points1y ago
I call bullshit
melodiic_5 points1y ago
it literally does tho....the more we sell, the more labor hours we get in the algorithm --> more floor coverage can be scheduled
richayy4201 points1y ago
Don’t mark it out your manager sees
Canadiansbux19 points1y ago
We do the same job and get no freebies so be thankful for what you get. (Grocery store kiosk )
lindi072 points1y ago
lol I went from a kiosk to a corporate store and I love it 10000x more
spacepoptartz10 points1y ago
Anyone else’s store manager make you print your receipts for mark outs, sign em, and put em in a folder or something?
richayy42021 points1y ago
Are you serious?
herpaslurp13 points1y ago
wtf that's actually insane 😮
tinseltesseract9 points1y ago
Your SM is on a power trip. That’s nuts.
diphenhydranautical5 points1y ago
when i was at panda we had to ring up our food and put the receipt in a specific case but we didn’t have to sign them jeez
BeardiesRule1121 points1y ago
LMAO
FlatAddress6 points1y ago
We get free shit every day, it is not that hard to mark it out so the systems a little more accurate.
Diegosnotrod15 points1y ago
You get food markouts?
OMGitsJewelz3 points1y ago
In Canada we don't even get food mark outs (or Spotify, or ASU, or lyra) 🙃
sh0werrod3 points1y ago
I’ve made this argument with some of my crew bc we all have different mark out opinions. For me, I eat kosher, and the only ONLY food in the store with a kosher certification are the madelines. No way I’m wasting a markout on one of those but I’m also not going to pay $3 for it. If starbucks wants to include more kosher options maybe then I’ll use the mark outs
Flowerfuls3 points1y ago
I don’t like to tempt the siren if I can avoid it lololol. But my area is strict so.
Cultural_Spinach_1753 points1y ago
Yah I rarely mark my food out because I work almost every day full time. I’m not gonna NOT eat cuz I don’t have any mark outs left it’s ridiculous. Same with drinks we waste sm so I’m w you lol
Apprehensive-Meep2 points1y ago
I mark things out unless its under my own till and we’re in a rush, then I tell my partners to remind me later on and I mark it out before I leave
crzyshiba2 points1y ago
We had this issue where the markouts were super low then our DM got on our SM cause we weren’t doing it so now it’s like make sure you do it .. yeah it just depends on your DM
spoughette1 points1y ago
I mean I don’t do mark outs for food because I usually eat a cake pop or a muffin that are taken from an already open package. We usually throw them away at the end of the night anyway soooo I can understand not marking that out.
idonthinksoannie1 points1y ago
Not marking things out in the POS is honestly just lazy and only hurts you. It's totally accurate what others have said about it impacting your labor and inventory. At my store personally enough food gets broken, expired, mistaken, or not picked up on a mobile for all of us to have a snack most everyday. If you're past your 7 for the week I'm sure one of your fellow partners isn't and would share. That might be grey area but it's better than stealing food and potentially getting fired over it. That's silly when you get so much free shit. Just my opinion 🤷🏻♀️
Eastern_Effective_491 points1y ago
I used to mark out my drinks but not my food. Sometimes, I ate more than once & those tiny breakfast sandwiches were not big enough to fill me up for an entire shift.
